    New Novel Chronicles Harrowing Iraq War Adventures

    Story could only be written by a former mercenary and an Iraqi expatriate

    Historians often bemoan the lack of primary sources in ancient conflicts. There will be no such lack for the recent Iraq War. David Westbrook and Diyar Alhusseini have collaborated to produce the new novel “An Uncommon Friendship: During the War in Iraq” (published by AuthorHouse). Though fictional, it is based on Westbrook and Alhusseini’s own experiences.

    “An Uncommon Friendship” is about a journey to America. The main characters are Dan and Nadia. “Their friendship during a very violent period in Iraq is what made everything possible,” Westbrook notes. “All that happens in this book has its basis in this friendship, even Nadia's reaching America.”

    Westbrook’s own service in Iraq add flavor to the story, but Alhusseini was uniquely positioned to learn about the war up-close: her father was Saddam Hussein's defense attorney. He was standing next to the former dictator when he was hanged. Her family saw bloodshed and terror before finally escaping. They were targeted for assassination because of her father's assignments.

    About the Author


    David Westbrook, 63, has lived in Arizona all his life except for the years he spent abroad. Westbrook served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army Rangers. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Air Medal.

    Westbrook also served four and half years in Iraq with Blackwater Security USA. He has been a cow rancher in Arizona all his life. He has a Bachelor of Arts in education from Arizona State University. Westbrook taught in the Arizona Public Schools and was an educator with the Arizona Department of Corrections.

    Diyar Alhusseini, 19, and Westbrook wrote the book together. She was born in Iraq, and lived there until her family escaped the violence and went to Istanbul, Turkey. They were there for 8 months. She and her family are now in Arizona.
