What now for Ron Paul after finishing last in South Carolina?

Ron Paul has yet to win a Republican primary or caucus. But his aim is to steadily gain delegates, building a movement and perhaps getting recognition at his party's nominating convention.

Ron Paul came in fourth in the South Carolina primary election. That would have been a respectable finish for the libertarian Republican, if there had been the seven candidates in the race a couple of weeks ago.

But with just four men left standing, that was dead last – just 13 percent of Palmetto State Republicans backed him. After finishing third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire, that was his worse showing yet.

So where does that leave Paul, the Texas congressman and physician?

Election 101: Ron Paul sets sights on 2012. Ten things to know about him.

Right where he’s always been – going his own way on issues, sometimes in directions anathema to most Republicans, certainly to the evangelical Christians and other hard-right conservatives who account for many of the primary voters and caucus participants. (His position on Israel, for example, seems to offend all of the above.)

“There is every reason to be encouraged,” he told supporters in South Carolina once the results were in.

"There’s no doubt our numbers have been growing,” he said. “We will be going to the caucus states and we will be promoting the whole idea of getting more delegates, because that’s the name of the game and we will pursue it. Tonight we will get four to five times more votes than we did four years ago.”

In the primary/caucus battle, Paul’s strategy is tortoise-like – picking up delegates as he goes along with the goal of growing a movement of enthusiastic supporters and perhaps having some influence at the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., in August.

"We've got four early-caucus states coming up next month,” Paul campaign chairman Jesse Benton told the Political Hotsheet at CBS News. “Colorado, which is a caucus-convention hybrid, Minnesota, Maine, and of course Nevada.”

"We've had field operations there with multiple employees, IDing voters, doing voter outreach, knocking on doors, working the phones and building coalitions, and we plan to compete and win in those caucuses,” Benton said. He didn’t mention Florida – a winner-take-all state which Paul is pretty much ignoring, although he’ll be there for the free media provided by two debates this week.

Many commentators note that Paul is campaigning mainly for a cause.

“He is unlike any of the other candidates,” writes conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer in the Washington Post. “They’re one-time self-contained enterprises aiming for the White House. Paul is out there to build a movement that will long outlive this campaign.”

But most poll numbers are not encouraging for Paul.

Gallup’s national tracking poll has him at 13 percent – his unlucky number, apparently, since Rasmussen Reports, CBS News/New York Times, and Pew Research all give him the same 13. That’s well behind Mitt Romney (30 percent) and Newt Gingrich (25 percent), and just a single point ahead of struggling Rick Santorum, according to Gallup.

His supporters are quick to point out that in terms of who does best in a mock matchup with Barack Obama, Paul comes in second among the four – losing to Obama by 5 percent compared to 2 percent for Romney and 11 percent for Gingrich, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average.

But win or lose, commentators left and right contend that Paul has a proper role in the Republican nominating process.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow argues with her fellow liberals that Paul remains an important factor in the race. Conservative David Frum has raised the question of whether Paul should be invited to speak at the Republican convention.

Perhaps, Frum says, but only with major caveats – such as submitting his speech for preapproval, and turning over his mailing list of donors to the Republican National Committee.

“The Republican party paid a price for Pat Buchanan’s prime-time ‘culture war’ address in 1992, a speech by a candidate who did not win a single Republican primary,” Frum recalled in a recent Daily Beast column.

Paul likely will not win any of the many remaining primaries and caucuses. But that’s never been the main point of his cause-driven campaign.

Um. Paul did better than Gingrich in the first two states and he has currently won more delegates than Santorum. Nobody foresaw the Gingrich victory in SC, so this is a wild race and any of the 47 states left to vote are quite capable of throwing another curve. But the press doesn't get it. Paul's main issues (the incredible national debt and the endless printing of money) are more important than the man himself, AND Paul would be the first one to agree with me on that. He's in it until the end (as are his supporters).

Ron Paul is too good for the GOP. They didn't even want him inside the hall at the
convention in 2008. George Bush ran up trillions in debt with his two wars , out of control
deficit spending and utter dishonesty , and Ron Paul's presence was in direct conflict with
all of that. He should run as an Independent , because that is what he is. He could win.
      • Confused 4 mths ago
George Bush wanted to protect our USA from having a war **here** We are being attacked now from within. Obama was elected with all the signs there; Voters disregarded who his friends are (and WERE before he was elected) and what his pastor preached (against USA). Just got him out of the forefront! A write in will or an Independents will get us Obama again. Third parties don't win. They split votes and give the opposition strength. Sad but true..

People, I lived in Ukraine, post Soviet Union Country, and I've seen what a disaster it is when you let a central government to control everything. United States became great because of the personal freedoms and minimum of government intervention. We can perfectly and alot more efficiently govern our-self on the local level.

Yaroslav, thank you for your post. America is becoming too reliant on government. We need more Ron Pauls in this country.

How bout if the dam media give Paul the same hype they do the other candidates? They purposely left him out in SC, that's why he came in last. These idiots wanted to see a dual between romney and the grinch. They're turning this into a #$%$ football finals.
      • Cheaptrick 4 mths ago
Nick, my heart felt feelings tell me that the whole thing was fixed. More so now than ever, it appears that those that cast the vote, don't count, it's the ones that count the votes, that do. I've personally witnessed improprieties at voting polls several times in my lifetime.

Ron Paul comes in 3rd in Iowa, the media only mentions who came in 1st & 2nd. Ron Paul comes in 2nd in NH and the media only mentions who came in 1st & 3rd. Funny how they are now talking about him once he comes in last?
    • Daedra  •  4 mths ago
It's funny that if you watch fox news every pundit that they put on the air is constantly bashing Ron Paul yet when you flip over to Fox Business most of those guys are always commending him. I've gained a lot more respect for Stossel and Judge Nepolitano and lost much for O'Rielly, Hannity etc. It's become apparent that there is a major schism within the republican party

If you look at the each mans life Gingrich's and Paul's who has lead a more ethical life? If you do your research It's hard to deny Paul.

Ron Paul needs to stay in, there are alot of people in Florida that think like Ron Paul, and a lot more that can not stand Romney or Gingrich.

Ron Paul: married 54 years; has consistent positions; wants to end war; is against the Patriot Act and a military police arresting American citizens on American soil
Newt: married 3 times and is a swinger; has changed position on many issues; can't wait to bomb Iran; is for the Patriot Act and has no problem with a military that polices on American soil

Are Americans really this ignorant? Israel has been telling us for awhile to back off, and let them take care of themselves....advice we should be taken. And, are Ron Paul supporters the only ones who have noticed that only recently have the other candidates only just now been talking about liberty, freedom, and the constitution. They have heard Ron Paul supporters scream loud enough, that they now are speaking Ron Pauls words. Which, if sincere is wonderful, I'm sure that makes Dr. Paul happy. But, I don't believe it, I know it's a political faux, and nothing they can say or do, will convince me to vote for them. It's Paul, or none.
    • Goldman's Sach  •  4 mths ago
Ron Paul has two things going against him - the corporate media/establishment does not want him elected, and the GOP does not want him in their party. But anyone with half a brain knows what Ron Paul is the only honest candidate out there and what he is preaching is the absolute truth. Makes you really have to question where America is going and what America is all about . . .
    • Christopher  •  4 mths ago
The media has been dismissing him all along. It should come as no surprise when he doesn't show one good finish that it's considered so bad for him. He's doing fine.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  4 mths ago
What do you expect, the RINOs who control the Republican party hate Ron Paul. He is ostracized by everyone for speaking up about real issues. Like the hundred year reign of the Federal Reserve, and endless wars that inevitably will spend us into oblivion. It's okay though, you get what you deserve. I suppose we can just give Obama the nod if you want, because RP is the only one who can possibly get votes from all sides of the spectrum! I haven't heard of any life-long dems coming out for the rest of them.
