In this photo released by the Intendencia Regional de Los Lagos, a column of smoke and ash rises from the Chaiten volcano, in Chaiten, Chile, June 27, 2008. The Chaiten volcano in southern Chile spewed a column of smoke 4 miles (6 kilometers) into the air and rained ash on a nearby village, in what geologists characterized Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, as a brief spike in activity.
