Pilgrims beat themselves with iron chains as they take part in the religious festival of Ashura in Najaf, 160 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad, December 23, 2009. Hundreds of thousands of Shi'ites travel to the Iraqi city of Kerbala each year for the Ashura festival, held to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, one of Prophet Muhammad's grandsons who was buried there after he and his followers were killed in 680 AD.
