Hundreds of policemen supported by Lebanese soldiers began a major campaign to destroy about 15,000 dunams (3,705 acres) of land planted with cannabis in the predominantly Shiite Muslim northeastern Bekaa Valley region of Baalbek and Hermel. Lebanon's drug-producing heartland is back in business with a resurgence of marijuana and poppy fields, challenging the country's underpowered security forces and adding another dimension to Israel's war with Hezbollah militants.
