In this photo released by Ancestry.com on Thursday, July 16, 2009, Susan Samuel, left, her husband Myron, center, and son Mark visit the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery, where her ancestor Venus Johannes was buried in Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, on July 12, 2009. Captured as girl in west Africa, Venus Johannes was married off to an American sea captain and sold into slavery on the Caribbean island of St. Croix. Two centuries and six generations later, researchers compiling a collection of slave records from the island traced her birthline to Susan Samuel, a 62-year-old woman in Houston.
