Captured as girl in west Africa, Venus Johannes was married off to an American sea captain and sold into slavery on the Caribbean island of St. Croix. Two centuries and six generations later, researchers compiling a collection of slave records from the island traced her birthline to Susan Samuel, a 62-year-old woman in Houston.
