    NPR: The Statism Network

Brent Bozell's column is released twice a week.

One of the greatest perversions of statism is the use of taxpayer money to push for ever more government spending and intervention. A casual listener to the far-left end of the FM dial, National Public Radio, will quickly conclude that NPR is one of America's leading offenders in this perversion.

Let's just take one show, the Aug. 22 evening newscast "All Things Considered," perhaps one of the most ill named programs in the history of radio. Conservatism is never considered. It is only besmirched, assaulted and rhetorically dismembered.

NPR anchor Robert Siegel was covering the new Martin Luther King memorial statue on the National Mall in Washington D.C. So in order to consider all things, he asked black wacko-leftist Julian Bond if Tea Party activists were racist.

Siegel threw this softball at Bond: "Some people read into the Tea Party's almost neuralgic reaction to government spending, a sense that white people figure black people benefit disproportionately from federal programs. Do you suspect a racial subtext to that whole argument?" Bond said, "absolutely," "there is a racial animus there."

This was actually a little well-behaved for Bond. In the past, Bond has denounced the Tea Party as the "Taliban wing" of the GOP. Speaking of Republicans, Bond stated after the 1994 revolution that the "running dogs of the wacky radical right" insured "white supremacy" was "everywhere in America" and insisted then that in the Reagan years, the Republicans were a "crazed swarm of right-wing locusts." That's who NPR turns to for sober analysis.

Later in the same program, NPR offered a profile of Democrat Sen. Max Baucus, a member of the new "super committee" that will somehow magically reduce the deficit in a way the larger Congress cannot. Only liberals are allowed to analyze.

Liberal number one: "Pat Williams was Montana's Democratic congressman through the 1980s and '90s. While he considers Baucus a friend, he doesn't agree with many of his fiscal policies." Williams said, "most notably, I've been disappointed in that he was the leading Democrat who engineered the passage of George W. Bush's tax cuts, which have been disastrous for the country." (NPR has no time for anyone who thinks the Bush tax cuts were not

    "disastrous" for America.)

Liberal number two: University of Montana professor Christopher Muste, who put Baucus on the right-wing fringe. Muste "says while Baucus is considered a progressive on many social and environmental issues, he's become a conservative anchor for the Democratic Party on fiscal issues."

To suggest there is a "conservative anchor" in the Democratic Party is to flirt with a mental walk on the wild side. That's like suggesting there's a conservative anchor at...NPR. Muste warned Baucus is "very cautious" and "cautiousness makes him even more moderate in a lot of his policy actions."

NPR suggested on health care that, "Baucus angered many liberal Democrats when he took the public option off the table in a failed attempt to bring more conservative Republicans onboard." Muste added, "So I think he's got to view this bipartisan commission as one of his few chances to actually really come back and reestablish his credibility as one of the key players in deficit reduction in

    Congress."

Did you catch that? Baucus has to "reestablish his credibility" on deficit reduction by pleasing liberal Democrats. That would mean by increasing taxes and refusing to touch Obamacare, Medicare and Social Security — anything.

Right after this came another statism story: the endless rerun of billionaire Warren Buffett beating his breast and insisting he's dramatically undertaxed. I'm bored just writing that. NPR anchor Melissa Block interviewed Joseph Thorndike so he could denounce the under-taxation of the rich.

Buffett can pontificate ad infinitum on this, perhaps because he knows NPR will not point out the obvious: Buffett doesn't live by his own credo. He could, but won't, write out his own check to the government. In fact, he does just the opposite, pouring more and more into the (liberal) Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, thus protecting his money from federal taxation. In July, he parked another $1.5 billion there, bringing his total to $9.5 billion.

Buffett and Gates have both argued for a stiffer estate tax, which this foundation craftily avoids. To real journalists, this would be a story, but not at NPR.

A Bozo the turd coumn that doesn't count dirty words, sexual acts or nudity yet still calls it a perversion. I bet he is a big fan of another "fair and balanced" network that also only looks to one side of the aisle. BB the turd is always preaching to the choir.

I listened to the NPR show Mr. Bozell references with Julian Bond. He and the other guests tried to make a case that racism against President Obama still exists in an overt and subtle way. Specific examples were Obama’s birth and religion – where some still believe he wasn’t born in the USA and is a closet Muslim.
Isn’t this more an issue of credibility than overt or subtle racism – as Obama has repeatedly, exaggeratedly over-promised and under delivered, and double-talked from his Senator days? Further, isn’t this is particularly telling when there is documentation of his domestic birth and Christian faith, but still there are people that genuinely believe it is all elaborately faked?

The American taxpayer is BROKE - CONGRESS = CUT IT-NOW

This Bozo needs to take his meds. His view of the world is so biased towards his Christian Taliban beliefs that he cannot tell right from left or black from white. How his opinion is constantly puked on web just shows how little importance it has.

Regardless of how one feels about Brent Bozwell, the most pathetic piece of this article is NPR itself, all Americans pay for this garbage, let NPR stand on it's own and then they can spill out any crap they want, otherwise men like Brent are very justified in pointing out NPR deficiencies

Tend to agree...how much of NPR's funding come from taxpayers and how much comes from private donations? ...too lazy to do the research myself.

Another rabid republican. How do we make them shut up?
    • C  •  9 mths ago
Brent Bozwell has almost as much credibility as Bagdhad Bob! He's little more than a shill for the same neoconservative failures who's policies all but destroyed this nation during the G W Bush years.

I have seen many posts that attack Bozell personally, but have failed to address the points that he made in the article.

Brent used NPR quotes within the context they made - it is NPR itself that shows its bias through the softball questions to liberal commentators. The names and quotes are above - nobody yet has challenged anything of substance that Bozell has written.
      • Thomas M 9 mths ago
They won't for the same reason they don't intellectually challenge Conservatives on political issues.....they have nothing of substance to bring to the argument.

Defining a perspective as "leftist", or "rightist", conservative or liberal, depends very much on where you draw the center line. I venture to say that most people (including Mr. Bozell -- who I consider to be rather right-wing) consider themselves to be relatively "centric" in their political views. What news outlet do YOU consider to be the most "centric" (which may not necessarily be your preferred outlet for listening to or reading the news)? Which do you consider to be "further" from the center -- NPR on the left or FOX on the right? Which newspaper is further from the same mythical center -- NY Times on the left or Wall Street Journal on the Right? How aboout "The Nation" on the left vs. "The Weekly Standard" on the right? For that matter, how about the Democratic party vs. the Republican party?

We all see the world from out own personal "perspective" -- and what you see depends on where you stand....
      • Thomas M 9 mths ago
I think the lines drawn between the two perspectives, for lack of a better word, are about as clear as they have ever been.
      • B Young 9 mths ago
This post and your idea that the lines depend on your perspective tell me that your belief system has no right or wrong and that you do not see anything in black and white, and therefore, you are a leftist. I'm sure you belie you're in themiddle since all your friends agree with you, but you are all leftists, and probably far leftists. I am a libertarian and therefore I identify myself as slightly right of center, and that is exactly what it should be.

"Actually there is a reason NPR needs your money. Their programming is below worthless, their kiddie shows inane, and almost everything else is propaganda. Thank God I don't have to watch them."

Do you watch a lot of radio programs?
    • Bill  •  9 mths ago
Does Bozell have his own bias? Does that influence what he says, how he shades the truth, what he chooses to talk about? Does he care about truth? Or, does he distrespect his readers by thinking them to be dumb as bricks and all too willing to nod and shuffle when he writes his crap? .....just when you think Bozo the clown is really dead, we find him rising from the grave and reaching for a keyboard.
      • PAUL 9 mths ago
Does Bozell get 3% of his budget from the government? Did the point of the article fly that far over your head?
      • Mike68 9 mths ago
Bill - Bozell at least offered evidence to support his opinion - thus making his opinion an informed one. On the other hand NPR does expect us to nod and shuffle when they peddle their highly biased (to the point of absurb) stories portayed as objective journalism.

If the general populace knew some of the crap NPR spouts as "objective journalism", then it would have died of underfunding years ago.

To be fair, if I was Brent Bozell, I would find NPR to be far-left leaning too. But anything looks far-left leaning when you’re coming from a far-right, ultra-conservative, fundamental-religionist frame of reference. As much as Mr. Bozell and his cronies like to complain about all this ultra-liberal media, he is no different by espousing his ultra-right views and creating ultra-right media. Unfortunately, he conveniently leaves out a whole bunch of facts about NPR. These facts include NPR also receives funding from private corporations, such as Fox (which he is found to appear on), private foundations and individual donors. He also forgot to mention that while NPR may be slightly left-of-center, they do bring on conservative politicians and experts, such as the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute, to discuss topics. As much as Mr. Bozell and his cronies over at Parents Television Council like to plug up the FCC and the courts with complaints of indecency, (which is ironic because he certainly doesn’t have any problems with the state when it comes to his agenda), Mr. Bozell has no problems appearing on the 700 Club with the indecent Pat Robertson, i.e. “Haiti had it coming because they made a pact with the devil” and other indecent things that come out his mouth. What’s ironic is that just yesterday, good old Mr. Bozell wrote a small item extolling the greatness that the Fairness Doctrine has been removed. If Mr. Bozell was so concerned about fairness in media, you would think that perhaps he would back such an idea. But alas, Mr. Bozell doesn’t want “media diversity” as he so implies in this small item.

I love how this guy can run a center designed to expose "liberal bias," and they guy doesn't even know what "bias" actually is. Here's a hint: being "unbiased" doesn't entail giving lip service to idiotic ideas. To be unbiased is to represent the world as it really is, and when you simply go by facts, conservative ideas tend to look incredibly stupid.
    • Gerald  •  9 mths ago
It's clear Buffet poses a big problem for the patrician class, this Bozell (the third) among them. He made his own money, he feels more strongly about saving his country than he does about leaving his kids filthy rich, he doesn't need to beat down poor people to feel better about himself, and - just like FDR - he believes government has an important role in preserving a strong and just economy. Not surprising he is getting the same abuse that FDR got as "a traitor to his class," a rich guy that told the truth....
    • afsere  •  9 mths ago
I have always wondered why we are funding, with our tax dollars, an organization that advocates what appears to be a socialist agenda. Is there anyone who can explain this to me?
    • Tone  •  9 mths ago
NPR is consistently the most balanced, least ideological source of analysis and news that I know.
    • Simple Mind  •  9 mths ago
More opinion trash. Guess what folks, conservatives and liberals look at politics and socioeconomic issues differently (I'm so surprised, aren't you?). NPR has some of both. So Yahoo offers another no-substance right wing RANT to obfuscate and polarize -- why, pray tell? God forbid, for example, that the average person might pay attention to recent news and opinion regarding the TRILLIONS loaned to the financial community from 2008 till now to support them after their irresponsible (criminal?) behavior when there's a single show on NPR that some conservative hack wants to spew about. Please Yahoo, leave the fringe out on the fringe, try to select responsible journalists of all stripes for the featured articles....
    • gerald  •  9 mths ago
Yes. Let's cut funding for NPR, a big contributor to the deficit. Let's ignore a swollen Defense Budget that enriches Repub-supporting big corporate contractors, subsidies to insurance companies for Medicare payments, overseas wars we shouldnt be fighting, and tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations. But "lefty" NPR is an irresponsible money waste. How much longer is a dumbed-down public going to swallow propaganda from the elite group of wealthy that is screwing them every day. Wake up people!
    • Star Gazer  •  9 mths ago
According to BOZO, anyone who isn't homophobic, bigoted, racist, anti-abortionist, young earth creationist and bible thumper is 'far-left'.
    • Starkiller  •  9 mths ago
Actually there is a reason NPR needs your money. Their programming is below worthless, their kiddie shows inane, and almost everything else is propaganda. Thank God I don't have to watch them.
