NRC investigates shutdown at Exelon nuclear plant
NRC: Special inspection to probe cause of transformer failure, shutdown at Exelon plant
CLINTON, Ill. (AP) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has sent a team of specialists to a central Illinois nuclear plant to try to determine why a transformer failed and caused the plant to shut down.
Officials say the incident happened Sunday night at the Clinton Nuclear Plant about 20 miles southeast of Bloomington.
Exelon Generation Co. spokesman Bill Harris said Friday that the plant responded as it was supposed to. He says transformer maintenance and testing is complete and the plant is being restarted.
A five-member NRC inspection team arrived at the plant on Thursday to evaluate the cause of the problem, the sequence of events and the company's corrective actions.
The agency says a report on the findings will be available to the public within 45 days after the inspection ends.
