NRL: Raiders beat Storm 24-22 on late try

SYDNEY (AP) — Canberra beat Melbourne 24-22 on Sunday in the National Rugby League to turn the tables on an opponent that has dominated them over the past decade.

The previous time the teams met, the Storm won 69-4 last season. And the Raiders had beaten the Storm just four times since 2003, a demoralizing run that included 14 consecutive defeats.

But on Sunday, the Raiders ended a six-match losing streak at Canberra Stadium when prop Paul Vaughan's 79th-minute try capped a comeback after trailing 16-12 at halftime.

Elsewhere, the Sydney Roosters ended a three-game losing streak with a 24-18 win over Cronulla, St. George Illawarra beat New Zealand Warriors 20-10 and Trent Hodkinson's 78th-minute field goal from 30 meters sealed a 15-14 victory for Canterbury over South Sydney.

It was the third week in a row the Bulldogs have won a game through a late field goal and by a single point, with Hodkinson repeating his feat from last week's win over the Warriors.

Canterbury coach Des Hasler said his side was lucky to come away with the win despite handling errors which left the Bulldogs trailing 14-6 early in the second half.

"We made it difficult for ourselves with eight penalties in the first half," Hasler said. "We hung in there in the second half and we got back into it."

Keiran Foran scored the match-winning try as Manly, also 5-2, beat North Queensland 26-21 and fullback Ben Barba scored a try and set up two others to lead Brisbane to a 32-6 win over Newcastle.

On Monday, Parramatta plays Wests and Penrith hosts Gold Coast.
