NTSB: Lead Asiana pilot new as flight instructor

Associated Press

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) — Federal accident investigators say the lead pilot of the Asiana Airlines jet that crash-landed in San Francisco was serving as a flight instructor for the first time while he was overseeing the pilot who was flying the aircraft.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Deborah Hersman said Tuesday the two pilots also had never flown together before the crash that left two teenagers dead.

Hersman says the pilot who was making the landing was about half-way through his training to fly Boeing 777s.
