NTSB: Reckless decision in sinking of sailing ship
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board says the former captain of a replica 18th-century sailing ship that sank off North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy made a reckless decision to sail into the storm.
The HMS Bounty sank about 100 miles south of Cape Hatteras during the October 2012 storm. One member of the 16-person-crew died and the captain was never found. Three other crew members were injured.
The NTSB released its findings Monday. The report says sailing into the well-forecast storm subjected the aging vessel and an inexperienced crew to conditions that the vessel couldn't surmount.
The three-mast sailing ship was built for the 1962 film "Mutiny on the Bounty" starring Marlon Brando, and was featured in several other films over the years.
