Nuke agency reports unusual radiation in Europe

VIENNA (AP) — Very low levels of radiation, which are higher than normal but don't seem to pose a health hazard, are being registered in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Friday.

The agency said the cause was not known but was not the result of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, which spread radiation across the globe in March.

The "very low levels of iodine-131 have been measured in the atmosphere," the agency said in a statement. It said such radioisotope will lose much of its radiation in about eight days.

However, an official familiar with the matter, who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, said the release appeared to be continuing.

The agency said that it was investigating.

In Prague, an official at the Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety said he was "100 percent sure" that the radiation had not come from any Czech nuclear power plant — or from any other source on Czech territory.

Speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk to the media, the official said tests are under way around the country to try and identify the source.

The Czechs are betting heavily on nuclear power and have plans to dramatically increase production — a move that would give the country a place among Europe's most nuclear-dependent nations. They currently rely on six nuclear reactors for 33 percent of their total electricity. The government hopes to at least double that output.

That's in stark contrast to its neighbors: German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government decided to phase out nuclear energy by 2022 following the meltdown at the Fukushima plants, and Switzerland has followed suit. Austria abandoned nuclear energy after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and strictly opposes the Czech nuclear program.

I think the concern here is if someone is moving ratioactive material and for what purpose not that these low doses of radiation are bad for people.

Cute, but the rest of the sane world suggests you promptly put some bullets in the brains of Amadinnerjacket and the rest of the mullahcracy, and end your nuke program asap.

Otherwise there's going to be A LOT OF RADIATION COMING FROM TEHRAN SOON.

Stick with coal. We have 700 years of it left. It's cheap. Best of all environmentalist hate it. What more could you ask for.

The half life of Iodine-131 is 8 days. That means that you don't get it from nuclear waste - you have to get it from active reactors or very recent nuclear weapon detonations. So someone's reactor is leaking.
      • Willow Tree 6 mths ago
Or there was double the release 16 days ago.
      • rome0njul1et 6 mths ago
WRONG. If Uranium or Plutonium reactor leaking, you would get MORE than just Iodine. You can a host of elements up to the Atomic weight of the fuel. So if it is JUST iodine... humans have gathered it and concentrated it. I say dirty bomb.

Russia spreading nuke waste dust particles over Czech republic for punishment.

Ah, yes. As the world continues to run away from safe nuclear energy as we're told that solar and wind power are the wave of the future. Sadly, the truth of the matter is that those two power sources aren't worth the panels and windmills it takes to generate the power. Maybe if there were 150 million fewer american's it might work, maybe.

Nuclear power is the only thing that could possibly drive the technology of tomorrow. You people that drive electric cars because they're 'better' for the environment make me laugh. The power is generated by coal, and lithium ion batteries are so much worse than you can imagine.

I-131 is produced by fission of uranium and its half-life is 8 days. If you see it anywhere, you can be sure there's been some sort of uncontrolled fission event. Once you rule out an actual nuclear explosion (I hope that's easy), you next look at reactor meltdowns. In my mind, that's the most likely explanation. And the authorities would NEVER try to cover up something like that, would they?

      Cause Unknown?

You mean that Nuke Plant in Russia that's on fire right now? You know, the one 4 times bigger than Chernobyl?

It's the same nuke fire that a US Official recently told some friends in Europe to "get out of dodge" now.

Come on Yahoo, you can do batter than this, I did most of the work for ya.......

I wouldn't worry...probably just some stolen nuclear material from the former ussr in the hands of black marketeers or islamic terrorist

I'd start looking at satelite photos of Russia. Their reactors are the most unstable in their design. When Chernobyl melted down the radiation alarms started to sound in Sweden. Sweden checked their reactors and didn't find any leaks. Other countries nearby also started checking their reactors. Eventually they started looking at satelite photos and soon found that the top of reactor number 4 at Chernobyl was blown off,.......Apparently the Soviet Union didn't think it was all that important to tell anyone about their meltdown until three days later.

Relax. It is just the meltdown of the European Union.
    • Thomas.  •  6 mths ago
This isn't the type of radiation one would expect to see if it were terrorism related.

That form of iodine comes from "regular" discharges out of nuclear power plants. So somwhere, a nuke is going bad, and the operators are illegally dumping the excess radiation out the vent stack, and not telling anyone.

Their is a new helium cooled nuclear reactor that uses carbon coated uranium pellets and CAN'T melt down. If power is lost or it loses it's coolant the reactor automatically shuts down.
