    NVUSD Director Honored as Education Leader at New Tech Network Annual Conference

    The recipient of this award is an entrepreneur in the field of education who has demonstrated leadership, and whose efforts have led to sustainable change in education.

    In an awards ceremony in Grand Rapids, Mich., last week attended by almost 1,000 New Tech Network (NTN) teachers, staff and administrators, Mark Morrison, Director of Secondary Education for Napa Valley Unified School District, received the Susan Schilling Award.

    The recipient of this award is an entrepreneur in the field of education who has demonstrated leadership, and whose efforts have led to sustainable change in education.

    Presented by Lydia Dobyns, New Tech Network President, the award was created by KnowledgeWorks(parent company of New Tech Network) to recognize individuals who have helped to innovate and sustain the New Tech Network. The award was named for its initial recipient, Susan Schilling, upon her retirement as CEO of the New Technology Foundation. Her dedication and leadership in the fields of technology and education set the criteria for the award.

    “Thanks to the contributions of leaders like Mark Morrison, New Tech provides the principals, teachers and students in our expanding network with tools and technology that empower and prepare young adults to become engaged citizens in the global marketplace,” Dobyns said. “As the Network expands in schools across the nation, our commitment to achieving excellent academic success is matched with a dedication to develop skills the college and business community value: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.”

    Prior to his present position with NVUSD, Morrison joined the New Tech staff as the Director of Leadership Development, supporting directors in New Tech schools across the country. Mark was also the founding Director of the first New Tech high school in Napa.

    Morrison returned to the Napa Valley Unified School District in 2009 as Director of Secondary Education and has helped lead the development of a new district wide Learning Plan that brings New Tech principles and practices to a broader scale by training K-12 teachers in project-based learning and equipping all students K-12 with laptops or other mobile devices. The will help students gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life, college and the careers of tomorrow.
