NY boy sleeps through theft of dad's running car

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Police in upstate New York say a 6-year-old boy snoozing in his father's car never woke up while the vehicle was being stolen after it was left running outside a store.

Officers tell Rochester media outlets that a 26-year-old man from Irondequoit (uh-RAHN'-duh-kwoyt) left his car running while he went inside a convenience store to get a drink late Saturday night.

While inside the store, someone jumped into the car and drove off with the boy asleep in the car.

Police say the car was found abandoned within 30 minutes. Officials say the boy wasn't harmed and had slept through the entire ordeal.

Police charged the boy's father with endangering the welfare of a child.

The car thief hasn't been found.

but would you leave them in a car when they were small...it think the article has a broader aspect on how parents suck these days not how hard there kids sleep

In this past week alone i've seen three instances of people leaving their small children in the car while they "ran" into the store only to see them walk out 10 min. later .I can think of many comments but one rings true ...you don't know what you've got till it's gone ....

when my first child was born he was in his carseat and i dropped the wife off at the front of the store since it was snowing. i parked and then started walking to the store. i made it about 5 feet before realizing my mistake and went back for my son. unfortunately my wife witnessed the whole thing and let me have it for about 3 mos. never made the same mistake again.

Whatever the justice system has in store for the father should come as sweet relief compared to what the boy's mother is going to do to him.

OMG. I agree with mad at pats. too funny. Shame on that dad.

She could have done the same thing. As a matter of fact, everytime I read about this happeneing it's more likely a woman left the car running than a a man.
      • Joe Mamma 3 mths ago
LMHfd - The point isn't that she could have done it too, rather that HE did it. This man should be praying for jail time, compared to what his wife has in store. Apparently, you don't know what women are capable of.

charging the father? Totally Absurd. How many of the officers that arrested the man ever left their kids in the car..ever. Hypocracy at its finest...

    • Bill S  •  3 mths ago
#$%$ left the car running with the kd in the car. He is lucky the thief did the right thing in a bad situation.

Sooo...they charge the dad but didn't fingerprint the vehicle for the thief/kidnapper? Nice.

How many generations of this type of crime do we have to see before we realize: DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED IN A RUNNING VEHICLE! Especially unlocked!
    • holy moly  •  3 mths ago
Let me see--the boy was sleeping so dad probably didn't want to wake him and drag the poor kid into the store just to get a can of pop; it's winter so dad left the car running so his son would have some heat; he went into a convenience store, which, if it's like every one I've ever been in has corner to corner plate glass windows allowing dad to keep an eye on the car; dad is 26 and not the worldly-wise practitioner of perfect judgement the rest of us are. He goofed up and now he's a pariah whom the cops swiftly charged with child endangerment. Too bad their zeal for justice didn't extend to finding the perpetrator of grand-theft-auto and kidnapping.

My self-help guru said I had to pick something to get incensed about today. I picked this because I felt that adding to the 'Brady Quinn Slams Tim Tebow' rant would just be piling on.

I didn't realize people still did these things. When I was younger, people thought nothing of leaving the car running, with or without kids, while they ducked in the convenience store. Including me. But that was a long time ago, before a series of unfortunate events.

That awkward moment when grand theft auto turns to felony kidnapping upon looking in the rear-view mirror...

Who leaves their car running and the doors open when they run into a store with or without a child sleeping in the car?

This was something parents have done for decades in the past....the only thing that has changed is the #$%$ nature of the world, druggies, pedophiles, and car jacks. All parents did it, cops didn't care, the sissy shrinks didn't care, wasn't illegal, wasn't the same wacked out world of the current generations.
