NYC lawmakers set Feb. 4 hearing on subway safety as transit officials have a discussion Mon.
NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City lawmakers have set a date to discuss a spate of deaths in the nation's busiest subway system as transit officials also mull safety on the tracks.
City Council Transportation Committee Chairman James Vacca said Monday his panel would hold a hearing Feb. 4. Meanwhile, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority committee had its own session Monday on boosting safety efforts.
In the last two months, two subway riders were pushed to their deaths by strangers. A stumbling woman took a fatal fall onto the tracks, a man was killed when he fell while walking between cars, and another was killed after apparently jumping under a train at Times Square.
Fifty-five people died last year after they fell, jumped or were pushed onto the tracks, the most in five years.
