    NYC Mesothelioma Lawyer Joins International Demand for Ban on Carcinogen Asbestos

    New York City mesothelioma attorney Joseph W. Belluck today joined the recent call by U.S. and Canadian advocacy groups for the elimination of the use of asbestos and asbestos-containing products.

    “The continued manufacture and use of asbestos, a known carcinogen for nearly 100 years, simply makes no sense,” said Belluck, a partner in the New York City law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP.

    “Any legitimate consideration of what’s proper for human health and well-being concludes with a ban on asbestos and the manufacture of asbestos-containing products.”

    The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, a national advocacy group for mesothelioma victims in the U.S., joined the Canadian Voices of Asbestos Victims in issuing a declaration last week. The groups called on Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and President Barack Obama to stop the use of asbestos and eliminate asbestos-related disease.

    Asbestos is a heat-resistant fibrous material used in a variety of industrial, construction and consumer products. It has been linked to disease since the early 1900s and identified as a carcinogen since the 1920s.

    Asbestos fibers easily break down when disturbed. If inhaled, asbestos can result in a usually fatal cancer called mesothelioma, asbestosis and other diseases.

    More than 10,000 Americans and 1,000 Canadians die every year of diseases caused by asbestos exposure, the North American Declaration to Eliminate Asbestos says. Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdominal cavity, is among these diseases.

    Canada permits the mining and export of asbestos. The U.S. and Canadian governments continue to allow asbestos to be used in some products.

    The U.S. Geological Survey says that about 90 percent of the estimated 820 metric tons of asbestos the United States imported in the first seven months of 2010 came from Canada.

    Belluck is a nationally recognized attorney whose practice focuses on personal injury and wrongful death litigation based on asbestos-exposure and cases of mesothelioma.

    He said most of the people his firm assists are older workers, retirees and military veterans who were exposed to asbestos in the workplace decades ago.

    “Because mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases can take decades to develop, we are seeing today how asbestos has harmed those who were exposed to it a generation ago,” Belluck said. “Continued mining, manufacture and use of asbestos today means we will continue to see disease, and the grief and expenses that come with it, for generations to come.”

    Belluck & Fox has won more than $450 million in judgments for plaintiffs in personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits pertaining to diseases caused by asbestos exposure.

    Anyone who has received a diagnosis of mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease should contact an experienced mesothelioma lawyer to protect their rights to compensation for the expenses and losses caused by their illness, Belluck said.

    The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and the Canadian Voices of Asbestos Victims are to present the declaration and a list of supporters to President Obama and Prime Minister Harper in February 2012.
