    NYC's Algonquin closes legendary Oak Room

    NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's famous Algonquin Hotel has permanently shuttered the Oak Room, its fabled supper club that helped launch careers of many top-shelf jazz and cabaret stars.

    Hotel General Manager Gary Budge says audiences are declining, and the Oak Room will be turned into a lounge for Marriott Reward Elite guests.

    The hotel closed on Jan. 1 for renovations and will reopen in the spring.

    The Oak Room, a New York landmark as the site of the legendary Algonquin Round Table, became a nightclub for the first time in 1939. It was silenced during World War II, and didn't have live music again regularly until 1980.

    Stars like Harry Connick, Jr., Diana Krall and Michael Feinstein got their start at the Oak Room.

      How sad. Seeing artists like John Pizzarelli, Diana Krall and others perform there was like watching them perform in your living room. It was a quintessential NYC evening out.

        No, "Hotel General Manager Gary Budge says audiences are declining," pretty much says it all. If you wanted it to stay open, I guess you should have gone to it more often so it could make money.

      OMG! My sister and I stayed at this hotel about 3 years ago (at $500 a night!!!)...because it was where my father lived for a period of time and where he met my mother. Very sad to hear it is closing.

      So sad. It was the greatest place after work. Just sitting there was relaxing. I still try to stay there once a year for a couple of nights. Sort of a stay at home vacation.

      Beyond sad, one more vestige of what once made New York City such a great
      and fabled place bites the dust because management sees better ways of making
      money with a Marriott Rewards Elite Club than preserving an important piece of
      history. This is much the same as the rape of the fabled Plaza Hotel several
      years ago that has resulted in a hotel that is now a shadow of its former distinguished
      self. And this is called progress?????

        Marriott Rewards is a free club. All you have to do is stay at Marriott brand properties often and you can join for nothing. It's a good deal, and the most popular "points" program going in the travel industry.
