NYPD body scanner tells cops if a suspect on the street has a gun

It must be nerve-racking for any cop when they approach a suspect who has their hands in their pockets, not knowing if the encounter will be a routine one without incident or a hair-raising one that descends into a life-threatening shoot-out. If only the cop could somehow know in advance if the person they’re approaching is armed. Well, soon they should be able to.

A device being developed by the NYPD uses infrared rays to scan a suspect’s body to determine if they’re carrying a weapon. The implementation of the device would mean cops could do away with having to frisk a suspect, a risky action in itself due to the close proximity of the suspect.

NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly explained that the infrared rays scan a “form of radiation emitted from the body.” Because the infrared rays cannot penetrate metal, the cops would be able to see a digital outline of a weapon such as a gun or a knife, making it possible to pinpoint its precise location.

The scanner would be mounted on a police van and currently works at a range of about four feet, though engineers are hoping to extend that to around 80 feet.

The technology, the result of a collaboration between the NYPD and the US Department of Defense, has been in development for the last three years. There’s no official word on when it might be trialed, but it certainly sounds like a neat bit of tech that should serve to give cops the upper hand when it comes to approaching a suspect.

This is why our government #$%$ me off. A police officers job is dangerous I get that. But what is stopping them from scanning every person that passes them by. And you know they will. Serous invasion of privacy. And illegal search of a persons body.

They already do something similar as they call in every single license plate they see, hoping for a registration that expired the day before.

Its already said to be harmful. Boosting the range to 80 ft would probably make it even worse. It was on the news last night.

        How so?
IR is the same thing you use in your remote controls.
It is not very powerful...poor penetration capability.
Please give a source to why you claim this is harmful.
      • Internal Server Error 4 mths ago
I'm not a scientist, I'm repeating what the news said. It was Fox, CNN or WGN Chicago that reported that. Also, I know what IR is, and like radio waves, you could presumably make a concentrated beam strong enough to emit penetrative radiation on skin. In the same respect microwaves are harmless until you focus a powerful beam into someones skull.
      • Internal Server Error 4 mths ago
Follow-up: Did a bit of investigating and the most extreme technology using IR is called a Pulsed Energy Projectile (PEP). A focused beam can knock you down from 2 kilometers away. That's one hell of a remote control.

Will NY cops get paid less, since their job will now be inherently less risky? (less than $220,000 I mean)

"It must be nerve-racking for any cop when they approach a suspect who has their hands in their pockets..."
It's also nerve-racking for any American to have their privacy and freedom impeded upon in such a manner. Now even law-abiding citizens with a permit will be closely watched.

Sorry, I'm pretty sure IR light is non-ionizing.

Far less sure about NYPD hooking up with DoD and CIA.

soon to be seen at all traffic lights, cross walks, government and public buildings courtesy of big brother. remember when metal detectors came out. anyone have a kid in school now? we have rights guys and this qualifies as a search which needs probable cause. of course im going to trust police officers to use this only in such circumstances...... lol right. lets take our country back America!!

What will be the standard for use, because it seems like an invasion of privacy.
      • Randy 4 mths ago
probably much the same as "compliance tools" ie.. pepper spray.. which is to say, if they feel like it :(

There wont be one. The government is becoming totalitarian in the way they write laws. They leave EVERYTHING open for interpretation which means they can do what they want, whenever they want, to whomever they want. Laws and technology are taking over our freedoms.

Read The Not So Patriotic Act and the "new" Defense Appropriations Bill. Between the two they relagate The Bill of Rights and The Constitution, NULL AND VOID.

      What Constitution
Stupid Americans you have no rights .

scan a “form of radiation emitted from the body.” Flaw in your theroy Nick, guess the kid is gonna give the scanner cancer?
The real issue I see is we all know that when the police get this, they will just go around checking everyone, and then look for a reason to make this person a "suspect". Typical NY big brother, always looking for an easier way to strip your rights away. A few years from now they will just mount these like human traffic cams, scan everyone walking on the street, snap a picture of anyone with a suspect scan, and put them on the "watch list". Bet you feel safer already.
    • Steve  •  4 mths ago
So, how much money did this cost the taxpayers? By the time the cops find out the suspect is armed, they are already in range.

Not right at all in any way. Wrong on too many and I don't have that much time to sit here typing.
    • Timebandit  •  4 mths ago
Just like New York, already one of the most anti-civil rights palces in the country when it comes to gun rights. Now they want to give cops the right to search you with no cause? Bloomberg comes about as close to a commie as you can get without moving to Russia, or China. New York cops have been proven time and again to be corrupt. How many of your rights are you willing to let them take before you squeal. Think about this, most of those guys are the ones sitting in school making Ds on their report cards and fighting the rest of the time they are not in gym class bullying the rest of the class. Those are the ones you want scanning you, tazing you, giving breath tests to determine if you are drunk or under the influence?
One last thing, when death or rape is only seconds away, the cops are only twenty minutes behind to do all the paperwork.
    • tony  •  4 mths ago
Just another step towards total government control. All done in the name of safety. Americans are idiots. I hope the cops that use this thing get cancer.

We already live in a police state. It is just less obvious than in other countries. And keep that cellphone turned on so we can track you. :-\

....or it could be used as an excuse to use unreasonable force, why does the mere possession of a "weapon" (anything COULD be one) = vicious intent? what sense does that make? wouldn't it count as illiegal search and seaziure?
    • Gnosis  •  Fort Worth, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.
    • Eric  •  Sumter, South Carolina  •  4 mths ago
What the (%&^ happened to protection from unreasonable search and seizure and invasion of privacy? You create this device and these thugs who call themselves cops will scan anyone or anything, guaranteed!
    • Paul R  •  4 mths ago
No. The new body scanner tells NYPD if citizens have guns, at which point they will be harassed and/or shot.
    • james  •  4 mths ago
This article makes it appear they will only use this once they have stopped a suspect. Others have said they will sit in cars or vans and scan every one they deem " suspicious."

The 2nd way of use is Blatantly unconstitutional. I have an expectation of privacy of my person even when out in public. For police to use physical searches or electronic without a warrant or probable cause is a direct violation of the 4th amendment.

I have seen statements from police that the safety "ends justify the means" and that any thing that will help police fight crime is ok.

Founders didn"t see it that way.I defy anyone to fight any such exlusion as ""ends justify the means" to following the 4th Amendment ahywhere in the Constitution.

Its a recipe for a police state. I understand that it would make their job easier. So would random house searches for illegal drugs and guns. What next ??

Bottom line is there is a price to be paid for freedom !!! We cannot be both free and have a police force with unlimited powers at the same time !! Founders knew that and thus was born the 4th Amendment !!

There need be limits on police powers whether it might make us safer or not !! Police take an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution which is the highest law of the land . If they as law enforcement officers don't want to follow it, get another job !!
