NYPD chief: Police could take down plane if needed

NEW YORK (AP) — The chief of the New York Police Department says city police could take down a plane if necessary.

Commissioner Ray Kelly tells CBS' "60 Minutes" that after the Sept. 11 attacks, he decided the city couldn't rely on the federal government alone. He set about creating the NYPD's own counter-terrorism unit. He says the department is prepared for multiple scenarios and could even take down a plane.

Kelly didn't divulge details but said "obviously this would be in a very extreme situation."

Other measures include sending NYPD officers abroad, using radiation detectors and creating a network of surveillance cameras in Manhattan.

The interview airs Sunday evening. It comes two weeks after the tenth anniversary of 9/11, when hijackers flew planes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Arizone comes up with Immigration Laws because "the Feds can't do their job". The NYPD can now shoot down planes because "the Feds can't do their job". Does anyone see a pattern emerging here?

Yes...people consistently believe they know better than everyone else.

We should do as Perry says and completely dissolve the federal government and all federal agencies, including the military. Each state should be responsible for sending their own citizens to war to protect just their people.

Upstate, we tried that for a while, it failed miserably, hence the Constitution.

Even if NYPD could take a plane down....where would they take it down without massive collateral damage?

Does the State of New York have a National Guard base near NYC?

They couldn't use anti aircraft guns....where would all those rounds that missed land?......middle of Manhatten with thousands of buildings and hundreds of thousands of people walking the streets?

Even a Stinger seems far fetched.....sounds like a bunch of hot air to me.

closest base is McGuire AFB in NJ.

talk is cheap. anyone can take down a plane with an ordinary rifle.

What's so far-fetched about a Stinger? It is very lightweight and shoulder-fired and has the capability to lock-in on the heat signature of an in-bound aircraft. It would almost certainly only have to be used against an unamored aircraft, it sounds like the ideal weapon for the job to me. The chance of a miss would be very small, even if more than one round had to be expended. The chance of significant "collateral damage" would be unavoidable, but probably still better than allowing it to continue to its intended target. Triple-A is obviously not an option. As Stingers are available on the international arms black market, NYC wouldn't even have to rely on the National Government for their acquisition. Wonder if D.C. even knows where NYC got them?

Really! How long would they have to ID the target, & it's intent? Would it be shot down within a city, populated area, or sea? How would they follow said target from the ground? What if a break down in communications happened? What if it were a case of paranoid flight crews? Instead of willing to have a percent of accetable civillian deaths, maybe place a minimum of 3 trained for this type of work agents on each flight. On on the front with 1st class, one in the center, & the third at the rear of the passenger cabin. Arm them with less than lethal ammo/ i.e. bean bags fired from a very short costom made shotgun that can be concealed within said agent. What the stupid idiot named Janet Napolitano& her DHS are doing strongly favors any & all terror minded animals. Now you'd have no reason for ANY! PD to posess any "(surface to air artillery) & the deaths of the innocent.

Can you imagine if the NYPD made the decision to take down a plane when the Obama administration pulled that Scare Force One low flying victory lap stunt over NYC? That would be the ultimate disaster of the elitist liberals' stupidity undoing itself.
      • Steve 8 mths ago
And the funny thing is, this lethal warning from a city government that believes law abiding US citizens should not be allowed to have guns.

I take it you didn't watch the 60 minutes episode if you have no idea how it works
    • Plezurgui  •  8 mths ago
Hmmm, let me see, NYC is ready to enforce Federal laws? But, Alabama and Arizona cannot? Something fishy here.
      • THETIMEISNOW 8 mths ago
        REALLY SCARY-OH-OH-SOOO ARBITRARY!
      • Lancelot 8 mths ago
Don't worry about it Plezurgui... Federal laws that aren't enforced will soon mean next to nothing; not even worth the the paper that they are written on. If the feds won't do it, and the states won't do it, the people will do it! Everyone seems to have forgotten where all of the firearms of WW II, Korea and Vietnam went to. They are all over the US and they are now in private hands; complete with the necessary ammunition. Americans will only take so much #$%$ from their government or from anyone else.

there is a big difference about someone crossing the boarder to find work and shooting down an airplane full of people...

Great, the cops are getting missiles now?
"Don't tase me bro! Oh wait, that's not a taser..."
    • Poe's Crow  •  8 mths ago
In other words, the NYPD has surface to air missles and is willing to use them, at their own discretion, against civilian airplanes. Best avoid NY airspace (it's airports) on future trips.

This is how wacked out this entire terrorism/scarorrism thing has become. Not only do we have people running around like dogs chasing an invisible tale we have huge amounts of
capital going towards the creation of the ultimate police state. Your rights have been eroded and you are being monitored because in an "anti terrorism" police state the enemy is invisible and the only way to detect the enemy is to monitor all subjects - i.e. the entire US population. Any type of serious public uprising will either be labelled as "terrorism" and attempted to be stomped out before it happens or hammered down mercilessly in the streets.

Nah, they'd end up blowing up a building or something, causing collateral damage, then the plane'd hit its target anyway.
    • Grunting Caterpillar  •  8 mths ago
What's really disturbing is that Osama Bin Laden has won. Our freedoms have been eroded to the point where a city chief is talking about surveillance networks and sending officers abroad. All this in the name of security? Bull! It's all about bureaucrats building little kingdoms. We're no safer today than any other day. It's just another way to bleed more money and influence from the average tax payer, all the while Big Brother grows.

You want safety? Pull our military back and let the camel jockeys kill each other.
    • Ricardo  •  8 mths ago
Lets see if i get this. We have a Gov. that believes the way to get out of being broke is to spend, spend. Then we have a police force that believes the way to prevents future attacks, why it's there job i don't know, is by having the ability to "take down" a plane?! What part of out of control am i missing here?!?!?!
    • G  •  8 mths ago
Hey NYPD, you don't have the authority or the power to take a plane down, that's strictly a military matter. Along with surveillance and some of the gear you and other "law enforcement agencies" use.
    • RoninBob  •  8 mths ago
Hmmmmmmm I wonder what kind of anti-aircraft weapon's the NYPD have on hand?
    • AlexanderO  •  8 mths ago
Now that I think about it, I don't think I can really rely on NYPD to take down planes, I want my own shoulder fired missiles just in case they miss. Where can I buy some?
    • Jesus  •  8 mths ago
I got a 747 for you right here ray, they really think that citizens are just going to take this like sheep being led to slaughter. Who the hell are you to take down a plane? And with what? Are you saying that a police dept has surface to air missles? Who is in charge of this ship of fools and how do I get off? obama, bloomberg and now kelly, that's the best the country has to offfer, we're done.

NY state national guard have its own jet fighter planes and they also cover NYC working in coordination with the NYPD,?
    • stevesjeep  •  8 mths ago
better to leave that stuff to the professionals chief...
    • Barry  •  8 mths ago
I think someone needs to take a very close look at their budget and what they are spending tax dollars on? Sounds like they are going waaaaay outside of their authority?????? #$%$??
    • Bernard  •  8 mths ago
      1) Who authorizes the "take down?"

      2) When they execute their "take down," where do the pieces and bodies fall?
