Obama: Ads Sometimes ‘Go Overboard’

President Obama acknowledged that some ads from his campaign and the super PACs supporting him sometimes “go overboard,’ but said that's part of politics.

In an unaired portion of his interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes, which was posted on the network's website, Steve Kroft asks Obama about the “nasty and negative” campaign ads that fact-checkers have called out as misleading or not true.

"Do we see sometimes us going overboard in our campaign -- mistakes that are made, or areas where there's no doubt that somebody could dispute how we are presenting things?” Obama said. “That happens in politics."

Retorted Kroft: "Aren't the American people entitled to the truth? Or a better version?”

Obama’s response: "The truth of the matter is that most of the time we're having a vigorous debate about a vision for the country, and there's a lot at stake in this election. So is it going to be sharp sometimes? Absolutely."

Earlier in the interview, Obama said that “I’m making a positive case for a specific plan for moving this country forward,” and that the stark difference between his plan and Mitt Romney's vision can lead to sharper attacks.
