Obama adviser: GOP will target middle class

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House adviser is laying out the theme of President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, saying the Republicans running for president would "take dead aim" at middle class Americans.

Obama's 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe (pluhf), says GOP candidates share the goal of loosening restrictions on Wall Street bankers and giving more tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. He says all of the benefits going to the rich would be paid for by seniors and the middle class.

Speaking Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," Plouffe said the election will offer voters a "profound choice."

The race, he says, will be "a tough, close election" that Obama will narrowly win.

Plouffe says Obama will defend his record on health care and avoiding a depression.

what middle class.. they are now the working poor

Middle class includes anyone working and paying their bill up to and including those that earn enough to have a nice home, two cars, a dog, take a vacation, have a few luxuries such as a boat or whatever, and a savings account they are building for retirement. Now-a-days, only those that earn a million a year or more are truly the rich. This is just my definition of the middle class.

The unskilled former middle class is now the working poor. Those with in demand skills are doing quite well. This is reality. The post WW2 fantasy land is over.

Hello, people, um...Democrat or Republican... You vote on the candidate more suited for the job with experiences, etc. I personally think media is the cause for most problems in this country. They used to investigate and report the truth, not anymore. You can't believe anyone these days, unless you do the research yourself and even that is difficult considering a lot of research is slanted.

Sorry, pretty much all Democrats (liberals, progressives) have taken the radical, Marxist pill and are completely unsuitable for any job in federal government that allows them to make rules for others or enforcing such. They are not to be trusted!

Bravo, you are absolutely right. Most people consume mainstream media and think they have all the facts. None of these people go and find out the voting record of their elected representatives and find out why they voted the way they did.

      We still have a middle-class?

How bizarre - the enemy and reason behind the disappearing "middle class" wants their votes? What? Taking their jobs and houses wasn't enough? The party that turns a blind eye to offshore billions the rich hide in offshore accounts but wants to increase taxes on those hit hardest by their recession think that the middle class will fall for their lies Dream on G.O.P. - Dream on.

We need term limits, but we still have lobbyist so regardless of who gets into office
we the people do not get our voices heard. The lobbyist are friends and have the
ear of both parties so they still get what they want.
      • Right view 8 mths ago
The government should out law these lobbyists because all they
        do are buying votes.
      • rosep 8 mths ago
Amen to that, but what can we do as American citizens to change

No term limits needed. Just vote them out every other election until they get the message.

Sylndras rats take the 5th; in thier bankruptcy filing they name DNC California as a loan guarantee owed. When does this smell like a real scandal? right now. Where is the 500 million in tax payer dollars that the Obama Administration rushed to the Defunct firm?Anywhere between Pennsylvania avenue and Sacramento. It won't go away and could drag a lot of insiders down with it.MOVEONHOMEOBAMA.2012

They can target the middle class all they want. Gov. Chris Christie had an answer to a protestor, she asked him why he is taken funds away from the public schools because he is. Than she asked him why is he sending his kids to a private school. His answer was it was'nt any of her business. The Gov. is full of crap just look at his size.

Government and its policies are transforming America into a two class system; those who fund government programs and those who collect from government. So there won't be much of a middle class to take aim at for very much longer.

You two goofs understand that big business receives much more in corporate welfare buy-backs, loopholes, and subsides than any amount of welfare that the people receive, right? Nah. I suspect that you've never actually realized this, don't believe it, or just don't care. Your neighbors are not your enemy.
      • Steven R 8 mths ago
Yes we need to stop corporate welfare.

The article tells us "A top White House adviser is laying out the theme of President Barack Obama's re-election campaign, saying the Republicans running for president would "take dead aim" at middle class Americans."

I would ask the top White House advisor why the theme of President Barack Obama's re-election campaign appears to be that the president is taking "take dead aim" at estimated 65-million middle class Americans who are retired, including military retirees, veterans, those on Social Security and Medicare, and those approaching retirement.

The President has proposed permanently reducing military retirement pensions, increasing military retiree costs for Rx benefits and Tricare for Life healthcare benefits, reducing Medicare benefits via increased costs to beneficiaries, and extending the age of medicare eligibility and Social Security eligibility as part of the funding to pay for a one-year reduction of FICA payroll taxes.

In other words, 65-million retirees plus dependents are being asked to permanently accept reductions in their retirement income and benefits to help pay the cost of a temporary one-year payroll tax cut for 100-million people still in the work force and their employers.

They already have, it will just get worse. The Koch brothers have laid off thousands and increased their wealth a hundred times over.

"avoiding a Depression"... I thought his stated goal was to keep unemployment below 8%. Only an idiot would vote for someone that made the economy worse for them. Unfortunately there seems to be many of them theses days.

In a healthy economy, the money supply would increase naturally by exactly the amount of increases in productivity. In fact, one of the main features of the gold standard is that it creates a balance between creditors and debtors. Creditors are more willing to lend money because they know the money they're going to be repaid will be sound. Likewise, borrowers are more reluctant to take on debt because they know there's not an easy way to repay it.

One of the main reasons you should prefer a gold standard is that it limits increases in the money supply to real increases in productivity. A second reason is that it simultaneously limits the availability of credit. Those limits mean that powerful interests in the economy and/or the government can't simply create whatever credit they need to buy whatever assets they want. In a true free market, credit is relatively difficult to come by and can't be manipulated by the various interest groups.

Facebook should start a political page where all 800+million can come up with someone to vote for. This way there is no media like news corp, and no funny money. Just us the people. But he should make all Facebook accounts that are active say of this date the only ones with voting power. That way the crooks can't break in from DC.
