Obama awards Medal of Honor to young US Marine

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Thursday bestowed the highest U.S. military honor on Dakota Meyer, a young and humble Marine who defied orders and barreled straight into a ferocious "killing zone" in Afghanistan to save 36 lives at extraordinary risk to himself.

"You did your duty, above and beyond," Obama told Meyer after reciting his dramatic story. Though the corporal and a fellow Marine were going against orders — commanders considered their effort too dangerous — they were doing what they thought was right, Obama said.

The president placed the Medal of Honor ribbon around Meyer's neck, patted his back and shook his hand as the audience in the White House East Room applauded.

At age 21, Meyer charged through heavy insurgent gunfire on five death-defying trips in an armored Humvee to save 13 Marines and Army soldiers and an additional 23 Afghan troops pinned down by withering enemy fire.

Meyer killed at least eight insurgents despite suffering a shrapnel wound in his arm as he manned the gun turret of the Humvee and provided covering fire for the soldiers, according to the military.

He had been supporting a patrol on Sept. 8, 2009, into a village in the Ganjgal Valley on the day of the ambush.

Meyer and the other Americans had gone to the area to train Afghan military members when, suddenly, the village lights went out and gunfire erupted. About 50 Taliban insurgents on mountainsides and in the village ambushed the patrol.

As the forward team called for air support that wasn't coming, Meyer, a corporal at the time, begged his command to let him head into the incoming fire to help.

Four times he was denied his request before Meyer and another Marine, Staff Sgt. Juan Rodriguez-Chavez, jumped into the Humvee and headed into the fray. For his valor, Rodriguez-Chavez, a 34-year-old who hailed originally from Acuna, Mexico, would be awarded the Navy Cross.

"They told him he couldn't go in," said Dwight Meyer, Dakota Meyer's 81-year-old grandfather, a former Marine who served in the 1950s. "He told them, 'The hell I'm not,' and he went in. It's a one-in-a-million thing" that he survived.

Meyer and Rodriguez-Chavez began evacuating wounded Marines and American and Afghan soldiers to a safe point. Meyer made five trips into the kill zone, each time searching for the forward patrol with his Marine friends — including 1st Lt. Michael Johnson — whom Meyer had heard yelling on the radio for air support.

With Meyer and Rodriguez-Chavez ready to test fate a fifth time, a UH-60 helicopter arrived at last to provide overhead support. Troops aboard the chopper told Meyer they had spotted what appeared to be four bodies. Meyer knew those were his friends and he had to bring them out.

"Dakota, I know you've grappled with the grief of that day, that you said your efforts were somehow a failure because your teammates didn't come home," the president said. "But as your commander in chief and on behalf of everyone here today and all Americans, I want you to know it's quite the opposite."

Meyer and Obama chatted informally Wednesday evening, on a patio outside the Oval Office, over a beer.

In the ceremony, Obama praised Meyer's humility and work ethic, noting that he would not even take a call from the president during his shift at a construction job because he was working. He is now out of the Marines. So they two arranged to talk over his lunch hour. Obama jokingly kidded him with thanks for taking the call.

My grandfather served in the Marines in between the World Wars. I am full of respect and awe for Dakota Meyer and Juan Rodriguez-Chaves. You both have done yourselves and a nation proud.

I wanted to serve, but like Dick Tough-Guy Cheney I draft dodged five times instead.

When asked during his confirmation hearings for Secretary of Defense why he himself never served Cheney told the Senators that “...I had other priorities than military service.”

You bet your rear end he did! Hey, why get drafted and blown away when you can dodge, then war profiteer and then got old and rich? Then you can send other poor people to fight and die. AND MAKE MONEY WHILE DOING IT!!!

That's a good deal! Now you know why Dick loves America!!!!

Who would you choose for a hero for your children to look up to?? This young man and his friends, or the likes of Michael Vick(millions for football and Nike)and torturing dogs..Think about it.
      • MASTER FOX 8 mths ago
Michael Vick has nothing to do with this.....and besides if push came to shove, a dog would eat you if he was hungry.
      • Kayanna 8 mths ago
        Master Fox,
Are you so desperate for someone to look up to that you would excuse what Vick did? I am not saying he had anything to do with this story, but I did use him as an example of who someone like you will defend..sad!

      • Mike 8 mths ago
he was awarded he didnt leave the humvee he wasnt shot .this man brushed aside gunshot wounds and ran from an armored vehicle risking his life to save his comrades i agree rodriguez was heroic ,no doubt the man deserves the navy cross he recieved but he didnt display the selfless valor of running into wildfire from all positions

Why isnt Meyer a Marine anymore when he saved 36 people. The army needs to learn whats right
      • Mindy 8 mths ago
Probably because his tour is over. So he is not an "Active" Marine.
      • Stylez 8 mths ago
Sadly, he probably had an OTH (other than honorable) discharge for disobeying orders. They probably did not take into consideration the lives he saved, they only cared about him disobeying... smh
      • ROLANDA B 8 mths ago
the army has its own receiptiants, he probably did his tour and decided it was time to get out. stylez, what a biotchbetter to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth (or type) and remove all doubt.

Dammit Yahoo.... never utter the word "gave" ever again when referring to any Military honor, promotion, and specifically this award. It is NOT something you give. It's something you earn, and is susequently bestowed, or awarded. That just irks me everytime you civilians use this term. Do not degrade this by comparing it to things people "give" for the hell of it. Do not insult this young Marine's heroism and his award. Semper Fi Devil Dog!!!! Ooh Rah!!!!

Why didn't the other guy get the MOH? He did the same thing this guy did, and took the same risks!
      • omar888 8 mths ago
        Im wondering the same thing.

I'm agree with Omar, Why the president did the sameto another guy. both risk them lifes. Didn't them?

This young man is certainly brave. This young man performed admirably under incredible circumstances. I wish we lived in a country that rewarded our young people for committing acts of bravery in any circumstance and did reward(use positive reinforcement) to send our nation's youth off to die. Imagine a United States where the leader's rewarded hope and science versus profit and war. Where the Dakota Meyers of our land were rewarded with medals from the president because they were brave vulcanologists, research bio-chemists, space explorers, teachers, engineers, architects, etc.... Where are government gave out money and respect for people that were building and developing a better tomorrow. But instead we live in a world where lawyers have become our career rulers at the behest of corporate lobbying committees and send our nation's youth off to die for failed foreign policies that justify stealing natural resources and reward that same youth with a glimpse at the leader and a piece of metal on a clothe necklace presented at a one time ceremony in their honor. I wonder if Sgt, Meyer will later run for president to be smeared by some some candidate later who didn't serve?
      • Dudenohair 8 mths ago
Well, I can tell you why it isn't done like you wish. 1. There will be wars as long as people think they have a right to other people's stuff. 2. As long as there are wars, there will be a need for Armies. 3. Young men make the best soldiers. 4. Being a soldier means you are willing to risk your life to fight for your country. 5. Being a medal of honor soldier means you run TOWARD the bullets and explosions rather than the instinctive duck for cover.
In your dream world, you would need to first eliminate the desire to take other people's things, which is against human nature. Whether it be a dictator mobilizing his people against the country next door, the tribe wanting the other tribe's hunting grounds, or communists wanting to seize the factories, human nature is for man to preserve what belongs to him, and violence seems to be the only way to stop the stealing sometimes. All those science people do contribute greatly to society, and without their efforts, the Sgt Meyers of the world would not be as successful, but scientists just don't risk as much as soldiers.

Ever hear of the Presidential Medal of Freedom? Or the Congressional Gold Medal?

They are CIVILIAN awards issued by the president or Congress for a wide range of acts.

The Medal of Honor is a military award, and cannot be issued to a civilian.

FYI, the benefits of wearing that "piece of metal on a clothe (sic) necklace presented at a one time ceremony..." go far beyond that ceremony. I don't expect you have taken the time to understand that, though.

Meyer is now eligible for the pension provided to all MOH recipients. He is also eligible for air transportation privileges. He is now eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery based on this award alone. Any children who qualify are eligible for entry to any US military academy without nomination. If he retires, he will receive an additional 10% in his retirement pay, which, btw, is in addition to the MOH pension.

The American people understand that extreme sacrifice needed to receive the Medal of Honor, and recipients are honored appropriately.

"I wonder if Sgt, Meyer will later run for president to be smeared by some some candidate later who didn't serve?"

You mean like John Kerry was?

Can we stop with the partisanship in these comments? The kid did an incredible, amazing, brilliant thing and was awarded the medal of honor by his commander in chief. Period. I'm so proud of him.
    • Claudia  •  8 mths ago
I don't get this medal thing. Was I to be honoured for something like Meyer did I would have taken Obama's call - even during my shift - and would have said save the money spent for this ceremony and give it to a good cause (and make sure it's spent for the cause and not pocketed by someone). In my youth, medals and trophees I won for sport I always gave them away.

That said, what Meyer did is amazing!

It is sad to see how many people can’t write a few positive words to honor such a noble act of patriotism just because señor Juan Rodriguez Chavez was born in Mexico.
No wonder the rest of the world is taking distance from us day after day.
    • bill  •  8 mths ago
Hey you a-holes. This is not aboutpresident obama, this story is about two very brave young men who risked their own lives to save others.apparently you do not understand how the marine corps code of honor works. The marines do not leave any one behind. Alive or dead, and when a dead marine goes home another marine goes with them so they will not be alone on their journey. The difference between you and them is they had testicles that went clank.grow a set and do what they did. Then maybe someone will show you respect.

I'm in the Marines. I'm doing my part for the is country. What are you all doing? NOTHING! You're at home, bashing the war, and thereby bashing myself, and every trooper out there! You are calling us all brain-washed killers! Am I the only one who remembers "OVER the Top For YOU!" And when we are around you think your doing something meaningful by grabbing our hand saying "Thank you for your service". What makes you think you even have the right to talk to us?!?!??!?! My cousin is in the navy. Anytime some aproaches him with that "Thank you" #$%$ he walks right through, because he knows, they're confused cowards that act one way for them, and another way for hollywood. GET ON OUR LEVEL, and then we'll talk. Any Man or Woman who does not enlist is a COWARD! You say you love this country so much? Prove IT!

To all Marines who put there lives on the line every day Thank-you for your service ant not just the Marines but to every branch of service. My earlier comments i have to apologize i was just bitter how we was treated when we returned from Viet-nam,to every military person i offended and the other people i offended,i truly am sorry.I was not raised like that,i am 64 years old and my memories of how we was treated when we returned from our tour of duty brought back bitter memories and fot that i am sorry. To everybody thats in the military or ex military,we have something to be proud of our service to our God and our country. And it is not obamas fault, not this, obama has a lot to answer for,but this is not one of them.Semper-Fi.

Why does the Medal of Honor, our highest military honor have to be a pentagram? -doesn't seem right...
    • Dave  •  8 mths ago
He wouldn't have had to save so many people if his superiors would've given the air support that they promised was only 5 min away in less than an hour. Sad, I feel for the guy, the look on his face says a lot.
