COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama has suspended the program allowing state and local officials to assist the federal government in enforcing immigration law, according to Fox News. This move was prodded by the Supreme Court striking down three of the provisions in Arizona's immigration inspection law. The president should just put a big "Vacancy" sign on the borders since immigration enforcement will not improve while he is president.
Nonfederal officials will have to wait for federal officials to arrest illegal immigrants. Illegal aliens are handed the chance of hightailing out of the area. If an illegal alien becomes worried about being watched by the police, he or she can uproot, get a new ID and start over somewhere else as they have done for years.
Since the federal government has not been able to get the immigration issues under control, immigration officials need some type of help. While the Supreme Court might have realized parts of the Arizona immigration law were unconstitutional, it does not mean state and local officials should not be allowed to help out immigration authorities. It means the assistance should happen differently.
President Obama has been weak on immigration during his term in office. His attempted Dream Act and his recent move to allow young illegal immigrants to be granted work permits proves enforcement of the immigration laws is not important to him. When the president's recent moves are added with today's move to strip the state and local officials of the ability to assist federal officials, we should all come to the realization of how the leader of our nation cares more about gaining more votes than enforcing our borders.
President Obama has tried to boast about how he has worked on job creation. Instead of tossing money at the problem of job loss through his stimulus packages, he should be working on kicking the illegal immigrants out of the country as they are stealing American jobs. Instead of calling for executive privilege to impede the congressional investigation into running guns across the border, he should be strengthening the borders. He should not allow his administration to block illegal voter-purge actions in the states. He should be working for all of the people instead of just those who might vote for him.
