Are We Really Done With Iraq?

President Obama went before the television cameras on Friday to announce what had largely been pre-ordained before he took office, that all U.S. troops would be leaving Iraq before the end of the calendar year.

It was in the final months of George W. Bush’s presidency that the United States negotiated an agreement to withdraw its troops from Iraq by the end of 2011.

In his first year as commander in chief, Obama promised to adhere to the timeline, even though many U.S. and Iraqi military leaders said some American forces should remain in the country. The U.S. position on the 2011 date changed this year, however. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his predecessor, Robert Gates, said publicly that some U.S. troops should remain in the country after the withdrawal. The conflict has claimed 4,200 American lives.

Proponents of remaining in Iraq argued that the smaller U.S. footprint would be needed to train the Iraqi military on new American equipment—and as a trip wire if sectarian tensions flared up again and threatened to plunge the country into another civil war.

The negotiations over the 2011 deadline continued into this month, but eventually the talks broke down after the Iraqi side would not extend legal immunity to U.S. soldiers and contractors in Iraq.

On Friday, Obama presented the loss at the negotiating table as a political victory. “As promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year,” the president said. “After nearly nine years, America’s war in Iraq will be over.”

But the end of the war does not mean the end of the U.S. presence in Iraq. Indeed, speaking after the president’s brief announcement, Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough acknowledged that the United States would continue to train Iraq’s military in the new weaponry that Obama has agreed to sell the government that emerged after U.S. troops toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Just this year, the Pentagon approved a sale of F-16s to Iraq’s air force.

Also remaining in Iraq will be military contractors who currently protect American diplomatic missions in Iraq, such as the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Irbil.

“As part of a new agreement there will be Americans in Iraq training and assisting the Iraqi armed forces,” Qubad Talabani, the Kurdistan regional government representative in Washington and the son of Iraq’s president, told The Daily Beast. “These Americans will not be combat troops but they will be U.S. soldiers.”

The president, perhaps with one eye on his reelection bid, did not mention the fine print as he declared an end to the conflict he had opposed even before winning election to the Senate, and which helped him win the presidency in 2008.

Republican reaction was swift. “I remain concerned that this full withdrawal of U.S. forces will make that road tougher than it needs to be,” Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said in a statement. “Multiple experts have testified before my committee that the Iraqis still lack important capacities in their ability to maintain their internal stability and territorial integrity. These shortcomings could reverse the decade of hard work and sacrifice both countries have endured to build a free Iraq.”

As the United States draws down, the massive amounts of military equipment, such as predator drones and other intelligence sensors used in the war, will be positioned in nearby Turkey, according to senior administration officials.

At the press conference, McDonough answered some critics who said the withdrawal could jeopardize the progress the United States has made since 2007 by saying there was a 15-fold decrease in violent attacks in the last three years. He added that “every study and assessment we’ve sought” showed the Iraqi military was up to the task of defending the country.

RIP to the good souls lost. I hope some good will eventually come from all of this.

it won't. the men who play these games for money don't care.

I agree with above response 100%. No good EVER comes from war!

I wish Ron Paul had been elected and kept us out. He promised to bring troops home the day he gets elected. Nobody else would. He proposed a trillion dollar cut to save our economy by ending much waste. Nobody else would. Want change for the better? Try Dr. Paul. He knows more about health care than those trying to force you to do business with giant insurance corporations who already rip enough people off. Yes the war was a bad thing and many lost their lives for the folly of their leader. I hope the rest of these wars end quickly so my son doesn't have to die for our leaders' folly while he's serving.

What about Afghanistan? Not like we're ever going to win anything there either.................... spend another 10 years there?? Get us the hell out of there.
      • STEPHEN 7 mths ago
        That is scheduled for 2015

cave dwellers with rocks and hand guns have been kicking our #$%$ for over a decade.....what did we think, we are better than the Russians?Even the Russians went in, full-force, and they were driven out....it's about terrorism or radicals or anything like that.... it's about local citizens, who believe in their cause.... they will die, fighting, instead of surrendering....they rather die with head held high, than to be subjected to the humiliation of capture and defeat....afghanis are strong and powerful - not due to their weapons, but due to their will-power.... they have a strong sense of what they are, who they are, what they need to do, to live FREE, in their own way......
      • Joe Guy 7 mths ago
Purr, not only did they go in full force, they weren't going after the hearts and minds, was more the heads and hands. They frequently decapitated insurgents and cut the hands off lesser offenders. If they couldn't win, with those tactics, how can we win with lesser tactics?

Congrats for all the soliders coming home and their families!! Been a long time coming!! Continue to pray for the soldiers in Afghanistahn-still fighting!

A patriotic, progressive and politically unbiased statement; i wish all these bush boys and girls can be reasonable for once. Politicking beclowds most visions; i guess only a few serious minds leave their comments here because of the crazy bums mushrooming around.

No comments on how it was Iraq that asked us to leave? The war is over...indeed.
      • rick 7 mths ago
Keep in mind, that as much as President Obama will cite this as his doing, it's actually in accordance with the Status of Forces agreement signed three years ago. And the Iraqis refused to allow the Obama administration to keep combat troops in the country any longer.
      • Jim Bo 7 mths ago
But that would imply that we are not loved, which is inconceivable to Americans.
      • OU812 7 mths ago
irad DIDNT ASK US TO LEAVE we left because the us military WOULDNT get immunity in the iraqi court system

Neither of these wars was worth our blood and money. And we need to just get out them ASAP. Both of these countries are run by corrupt incompent leaders. Why should we stay until they can get there act together?
      • M 7 mths ago
neither? Iraq & Libya?? you are right.
      • Dave Jackson 7 mths ago
so after 9/11 you wanted America to do nothing! You wanted america to say, "you knocked down the towers well done, we are just going to go back to being a super power". Of course the Afghanistan war was necessary you douche bag. But I wont say the same about Iraq.
      • AndrewH 7 mths ago
I am guessing that you're talking about Iraq & the U,S.?
    • Tony Montana  •  7 mths ago

Just bring all of our troops home and let that region fall deeper into chaos. Cause no matter what we do over there the people will still hate us. They will take our aid with one hand and kill us using the other.
    • DocZom  •  7 mths ago
Now lets bring home the troops in Afghanistan, then Europe. As long as nut jobs are in charge of North Korea, we need to stay in that region. But slash our military commitments, and the military budget. We cannot afford to maintain an Empire anymore.
    • Robert P  •  7 mths ago
We gave them freedom from a dictator. What they do with that freedom is up to them. It is no "loss" of the US if the Iraqi people return to herding goats with tribal loyalties (same goes for Afghanistan). If the Iraqis can't be "trained" to defend themselves in 10 years it is because they do not want to (rifles are not that complicated to operate). If after WWI France had degenerated into a civil war that result would not have meant that the US was wrong for landing at Normandy and driving the Nazis out of France. Our troops have done all that can be accomplished with armed force. It is time for our troops to come home and for the Iraqis to solve their own internal political issues. If things turn out really really badly, we still have bombers and lots of nukes.

if they havent learned to fight for themselves by now then we cant help .that war has distroyed too many good mens lives

Many of us Viet Nam vets that felt lousy after our so-called truce with the North Vietnamese, thus ending the war, when they kicked our #$%$ out, feel Iraq and Afghanistan will end the same. We don't win; we just agree to a truce and leave the countries for the spoils going to whomever comes out on top. As in every war, especially since Korea, our military did their very best, including death, so politicians can say we were victorious and reached a truce. I would like to vent in my real true manner here, but it won't be published; so I'll end by saying #$%$

If we continue to hunt food for Iraq when will they start hunting food for themselve. Ten years is enough. Can you imagine if you had a child born and for ten years youre still breast feeding him or her! That is wha we are doing with Iraq. If we do not leave now, Iraq will never grow up. Obama is right, it is time for our soldiers to come back at home

Eight years ago Iraq was ruled by an irrational and brutal regime that hurt its own people, creates instability throughout the region and hated the US. Whereas today Iraq is now ruled by an irrational and brutal regime that hurts its own people, creates instability throughout the region and hates the US. Mission accomplished?
    • 427 Shelby  •  7 mths ago
Who will the Iraqis blow up now that we are gone? Themselves. Still. Of course.

Can we just be thankful that thousands of our fellow Americans will be with their families for the holidays and leave politics out of it for once?
