Obama defends push to raise taxes on rich

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Inviting questions, President Barack Obama got one he was happy to answer.

"Would you please raise my taxes?" one man asked the president Monday at a town hall hosted by the social networking company LinkedIn.

The questioner described himself as unemployed by choice after succeeding at a search-engine startup company that did "quite well" — he was later identified as former Google executive Doug Edwards — and said he wants the nation to spend more on education, infrastructure and job training. That gave Obama a chance to promote his nearly $450 billion jobs plan that would be paid for by higher taxes opposed by Republicans but not, evidently, by some of Silicon Valley's wealthiest.

"I appreciate the fact that you recognize that we're in this thing together. We're not on our own," Obama said. "Those of us who have been successful, we've always got to remember that."

In a session dominated by economic concerns, the president plugged his jobs agenda in fielding questions on the employment picture, education, Medicare and Social Security. The president spoke midway through a three-state Western swing built largely around fundraising for himself and other Democrats.

Obama is in a deadlock with congressional Republicans, including House leaders, over raising taxes as part of a formula for helping a staggering economy. He has put forward a debt-reduction plan that would raise $1.5 trillion in new revenue, including about $800 billion over 10 years from repealing the Bush-era tax cuts for couples making more than $250,000.

Obama also said the financial crisis rippling through Europe is "scaring the world" and that steps taken by European nations to stem the eurozone debt problem "haven't been as quick as they need to be." His reference to the European debt crisis came on the heels of remarks by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who over the weekend urged governments to unite with the European Central Bank to help defuse the "most serious risk now confronting the world economy."

In the short term, Obama wants Congress to cover the cost of his jobs plan by, among other changes, limiting the itemized deductions for charitable contributions and other deductions that can be taken by individuals making more than $200,000 a year and families making over $250,000.

Obama said he did not want to punish the rich, but rather to return income tax rates to the level of the 1990s that he said were fair.

"During that period, the rich got richer," the president said. "The middle class expanded. People rose out of poverty."

Edwards, former director of consumer marketing and brand management for Google, encouraged Obama to "stay strong" in his push for higher taxes on the wealthy.

Obama also made no apologies for Wall Street regulation and environmental rules and doesn't buy the GOP charge they're costing jobs.

The event was at the Computer History Museum, near LinkedIn's Silicon Valley headquarters.

Referring to the countries of Europe, Obama said they have not fully dealt with banking crises, and now the struggles in Greece have compounded the problem. "So they are going through a financial crisis that is scaring the world and they're trying to take responsible actions, but those actions haven't been quite as quick as they need to be," he said.

Obama is on the road selling both his jobs plan and his own re-election.

He held three fundraisers Monday on the heels of four he held Sunday as he races to collect cash ahead of a Friday quarterly fundraising deadline that will provide a snapshot of the president's strength against the GOP field.

"I can't do it alone. You guys are my ambassadors, you guys are my advocates and my shock troops out there," Obama told donors in La Jolla, Calif., where 130 guests paid $5,000 per ticket to attend a private lunch where he spoke.

At a fundraiser in Los Angeles late Monday, Hollywood executives and performers — including actors Eva Longoria, Jack Black and Gina Gershon — paid $17,900 each to see the president.

"Don't get tired on me now," Obama told them.

When President Obama says that he wants the Wealthy to pay more, he speaks of the Corporate Jet owners, CEOs and Hedge Fund investors. He should include those that must also be considered Obscenely Wealthy: Football Players, Basketball Players and Rap Stars.

Yes, ANYBODY that makes over 200,000 (250,000 couple)! Most of which don't have an issue with it.

50% of your income goes for all the 212 other taxes you, the middle class pays. Some studies put that figure at over 70%. Every tax a business pays is passed onto you the consumer. Every fee or tax you pay, not matter how small or large goes to the government.
What I don't get, is the government is broke, yet at least half the money you make goes to paying the government. Obviously the government is living way beyond its means. So why do you put up with it?
      • SCCarl 8 mths ago
And that's EXACTLY what the Tea Party wants to end. Government is too big, too expensive, too wasteful and taking too much of our wages.

If I owned a business that operated primarily inside the USA, I would do everything I could to move operations off shore.

Businesses aren't created to employ people, they are created to make money. The gov't is threatening business owners' bottom line.
      • suzanne t 8 mths ago
But apparently you don't and greed is your mitigating factor over the good for the greater whole. Your just a real gem of a guy.
      • Newbie 8 mths ago
Yea Allen what are you thinking? Businesses need to go into business to create jobs and pay for all the employees needs. Just ask Suzanne how this is done...she will be opening a business soon and doesn't want to make a dime...just create 100s of jobs. The Gov will see to it she won't fail when she runs out of money.

It's kind of hard to have a company without any employees so while the statement may be logical, it's still stupid.

Taxing the "Rich" would include All the Members of Congress and the Obamas and cronies. I'm all for it!

Then you ought to be for it.

I don't know. Charlie Rangel wasn't paying income taxes renting his $500k get away home in the Dominican Republic to political contributors that never actually used the home, nor did he explain how a lifetime "public servant" with use of three rent subsidized housing units could afford a $500k get-away. It must be complicated!

But they are already rich off of our taxes.

"Would you please raise my taxes?" one man asked the president at a town hall here Monday............don't you just love it when they put implants out in the audience. I'm sure they do it all the time (on both sides of the isle). how the democrats define rich is a joke. how about the democrats and republicans come to a truce. GO AHEAD AND RAISE TAXES ON THE RICH. but at the same time.....the federal govt (or federal reserve) will NO LONGER BE ALLOWED TO DEVALUE OUR DOLLAR....PERIOD. we all know INFLATION (or devaluation of the dollar) is a TAX ON EVERYBODY (an ongoing tax that is levied on us EVERY YEAR). and we all inflation hurts the low and middle class the worst. SOUND LIKE A GOOD COMPROMISE? I know obama won't go for it. heck, I don't even know if the majority of republicans would go for it. the MONETARY SYSTEM was created to benefit the people, NOT THE GOVT. but for some reason it's the reverse of that right now. and of course it benefits the BIG BANKS along with the federal govt.

It appears as if the propagandists are out in full force in the comments section today. Don't fall for it.

These super-rich are nothing but judas goats being used as a con to lead the rest of us to slaughter. There simply aren't enough rich people to make a dent by raising income tax on them. They're a bunch of tax dodges that don't pay income tax anyway. But they're a great story, and once you get on board with the "tax the rich" message, you are essentially giving the nod to tax increases for you. I think they're -=really=- after mortgage tax deduction and at folks making over $200K a year. That's not the "rich," that's two married teachers.

If the government needs revenue, then stop the friggin' meddling and let the private sector do what it does best. Once everyone is back to work, the government will have plenty of revenue.

Recessions are temporary. Tax increases are forever. Don't fall for it.

The american consumer is the only one that can solve the problem
If we unite and buy only products manufactored in the USA, GREED will force the super rich to bring the jobs back home...this would create JOBS and more tax payers.
If we keep buying the goods manufactored in other countries....the jobs stay there and the rich still make their big profit in the usa

Unless the U.S. gets a handle on trade imbalances with countries like China, there is little hope for recovery. Instead of focusing on the issues that are causing the problem both parties are fighting over what the other said. They have yet to debate or discuss the real issues facing us all.

      only 2 questions:

Does making more than 200000 make you a millionaire? or a billionaire?

And what is fair for such fortunate folks, please suggest a % for federal, state, and city income taxes?

over 50% enough? what is FAIR? 70%? 80?

      And a bonus question:

who do you think will be dumb enough to work if your BOZO president gets his way? And what will happen when nobody works?
    • antolio  •  8 mths ago
obama , dont forget to to raise the taxes on that guy from google, tell him to an write an extra check to the IRS.
    • Jim  •  8 mths ago
another option is to get corporations to pay their fair share. when we work we are taxed on our income. big corporations like general electric, ford, general motors, etc, pay little to no tax because of the "loopholes" for corporations.
    • Stink Finger  •  8 mths ago
Why do ppl who say they are not taxed enough Fight paying the taxes they owe?(BUFFET)

See ARICH REPUBLICAN below... OUTSOURCING OUR JOBS, FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS, TAX BREAKS FOR THE WEALTHIEST CITIZENS, CORPORATE WELFARE, WELFARE ABUSES for the poor, IMMIGRATION POLICIES, but most of all the outsourcing of our jobs, and the trade imbalance: the result of big money's influence on our politicians and our national policies, are bleeding the USA toward a slow death. While the USA declines, CEOs and Wall Street hedge fund managers are making record gains. Sadly, it sits squarely on the shoulder of the "sheeple" of the USA to buy MADE IN USA, and send a message to those who would gain from the demise of AMERICA THE FREE!!! The media, owned and operated by the rich will not cut their own throat to get this message out... Sheeple! Are you listening? Can you hear? Do you see what's at stake?
