Washington (AFP) - US President Barack Obama said Monday he would send up to 200 extra troops to protect the US Embassy in Baghdad, following an initial deployment of 275 soldiers earlier this month.

The move, revealed in a letter to Congress, is separate from the dispatch of 300 military observers sent to Iraq to assess the needs of the country's armed forces following the swift advance of Sunni radical fighters in recent weeks.
