Obama, GOP skirmish on payroll tax cut both favor

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama vowed to delay Congress' year-end vacation as well as his own Thursday for "as long as it takes" to extend Social Security payroll tax cuts and long-term jobless benefits, his second challenge in as many days to conservative Republicans.

Obama stated his position as the House GOP leadership put the finishing touches on legislation that meets White House specifications in important areas but also contains at least one provision the president has pledged to veto.

A vote in the House is likely early next week, and party officials said the president's threatened veto, which relates to a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to Texas, had made it easier to round up support from conservatives eager to be seen defying Obama.

"Frankly, the fact that the president doesn't like it makes me like it even more," said Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, a leader of House conservatives, who added he had supported an earlier version, as well.

Separately, the two parties skirmished inconclusively in the Senate — each side blocking action on the other's payroll tax alternative — in a showdown that dramatized the partisan nature of the struggle nearly a full year in advance of the 2012 elections. Given the slow economic recovery and the political appeal of renewing tax cuts and unemployment benefits, it seems likely compromise legislation will reach the president's desk in the next two weeks. And while there were signs of an emerging consensus on key points, the day's events made it clear both sides had decided there was still time to bicker.

"Get it done. If not, maybe we'll have a white Christmas here in Washington," the president said in an appearance before reporters in which he accused GOP leaders in Congress of "wanting to dicker, wanting to see what they can extract from us in order to get this done."

But House Speaker John Boehner said the item that drew Obama's opposition on Wednesday, the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to Texas, "will create tens of thousands of jobs immediately. It has bipartisan support in the House and Senate. It's pretty clear that the president has decided to push this decision off for a year, conveniently until after his next election."

While the item unifies Republicans, it may be hard for Democrats to finesse, with environmental groups generally opposed to the project and some labor unions in favor.

At its core, the emerging House bill would extend the existing Social Security payroll tax cut at the heart of Obama's jobs program, through 2012.

It also would renew an expiring benefit program for the long-term unemployed the president also favors, although at a reduced level from current law.

In addition, Republicans are proposing to avert a 27 percent cut in payments to doctors serving Medicare patients, a provision that Democrats have said privately they are receptive to.

Obama drew a somewhat indistinct line on Wednesday when he said,"efforts to tie a whole bunch of other issues to what's something that they should be doing anyway will be rejected by me." Apart from the pipeline, he did not elaborate.

The GOP rank and file has been split over extending the tax cuts.

While some want to avoid raising taxes, others argue that the payroll tax relief enacted a year ago has not helped create jobs, and that its extension would raise the deficit and drain money from Social Security.

Boehner's strategy has been to add other elements to the measure in hopes of building support from Republicans, including the extension of existing Medicare fees and the pipeline provision, which seemed to take on greater political significance once Obama spoke out against it.

The emerging House bill also is expected to block implementation of a proposed Environmental Protection Agency regulation limiting toxic emissions from industrial incinerators, another potential area for dispute with the White House.

There was unlikely to be much if any controversy over another provision, which would renew for 2012 a law that lets small businesses write off the cost of new equipment purchases immediately. Obama included the extension in his jobs program.

While there is general agreement among leaders of both parties that the legislation must be paid for to avoid raising deficits, there are differences over the details.

Democrats favor imposing a surtax on incomes over $1 million, hoping to depict Republicans — nearly all of whom are opposed — as protecting millionaires at the expense of the middle class.

House Republicans want to raise premium fees on the wealthy for Part B Medicare, a change that they note would fall on many of the same people the Democrats want to tax.

The House bill also would freeze pay for two additional years for federal employees and increase their retirement costs.

Also in the measure is the repeal of nearly $43 billion already approved for the year-old health care law, which stands as Obama's signature domestic achievement.

There was no suspense in the Senate, where blocking maneuvers left rival payroll tax plans short of the 60 votes needed to advance for the second consecutive week.

The vote on the Democrats' plan was 50-48, with Sen. Susan Collins of Maine the only Republican in favor.

The Republican measure was turned aside 22-76. A majority of Republicans opposed it, reflecting the party's internal divisions.

Verytired of intransigence of Obummer and crew. The do-nothing President of class warfare rhetoric is determined to make political points for his re-election while our American people suffers. The corruption and waste of this administration is mind-boggling. His Marxist ideology and programs has not traction with the American economic engine. Obama do this country a patriotic favor and resign from office.

Do Nothing? You must mean a do nothing congress. Can't you see what is happening here. Or are you just blind?

You want facts? Here's a few:

Democrats once had control of Congress. In fact, the Democrat-controlled Pelosi/Reid Congress was one of the most productive in modern American history. In those two short years of control, President Obama tackled Wall Street reform which politicians have been trying to do for 60 years. He pushed for and signed healthcare reform into law. (FOX News viewers call this Obamacare.) He passed the stimulus bill which saved our economy from the brink of destruction and pumped 100 billion into the national infrastructure. It is arguable that more is needed and that it wasn't enough, but it contained billions for science and tech research including renewable energy. What would have happened if we "hadn't" passed the stimulus bill? We were losing 800K jobs a month when the President was inagurated. This President funded an experimental energy research agency Bush created, which like Bush's prescription drug plan, he never actually paid for. President Obama also gave a giant investment to NASA and the National Science Foundation. He expanded state health insurance for children and signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay act. He negotiated and signed a nuclear arms deal with Russia to reduce both countries arsenels by a third and pushed for a global nonproliferation treaty. This President ordered the incursions that led to the death of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki. He's also dismantled al Qaeda and put Ghadaffi into the history books. In fact, President Obama has accomplished more in foreign policy in 3 years than Bush did in 8 without starting any wars. What else? The Hate Crimes Protection Act that's been stuck in Congress for years? Passed. Food and Drug regulation of Big Tobacco? Passed. And now, following the Deepwater Horizon disaster, he's reworking the MMS and increasing oversight of our energy policy. President Obama pushed an overhaul of the Student Loan program and cancelled the F22 program which was irrelevant to both wars we're fighting. He's ended "Don't Ask Don't Tell," stopped defending DOMA and will probably get to energy reform before his first term is up. And now he's removing US troops from Iraq. This Administration has accomplished all of this despite relentless partisan bickering so severe it led to a downgrade in our credit rating (thank you Tea Party,) and despite inheriting an economy so damaged by Bush that it was on the verge of collapse. I'm voting for President Obama in 2012 and every other Democrat on my ballot. The Republican candidates for the nomination do not inspire confidence and I've had enough partisan gridlock. I'm not ready to give the keys back to the guys who drove the economy into the ditch yet. I'm going to vote to give the President a fair chance to finish what he's started. It took Bush 8 yrs to get us in this mess, Obama deserves equal time to get us out. Just don't say President Obama can't get things done. He's shown us that when he isn't dealing with Republicans who have "making the President fail" as their primary goal he can accomplish quite a bit.

The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Barack Hussein Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. The nation that can survive the BO is less likely to survive the dumb masses that made him their president. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

VOTE DAN for US PRES!! I am announcing my intention to enter the GOP field. I pledge to initiate legislation ordering all widely-held misconceptions to be reclassified as objective facts, wholesale condemnation of (1) intellectual curiosity, (2) pursuit of objective knowledge and (3) overall, scientifically provable or demonstrable fact*. My platform also includes condemnation of taxes, regulations, and symbols of education and culture; advocacy for the gold standard and 100% required reserves; a promise to terminate all branches of government except the military; a proposal to euthanize poor people and remove gays to a remote island colony (where they can at least still provide us with art and fashion); I'll refer to other countries as if they were people with coherent individual personalities; I'll use real simple logic peppered with self-serving interpretations of history that my voter base will neeeeever check; and I'll talk with a twangy accent. VOTE DAN!!

If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and Jesus silenced.

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A liberal will delete it because he's "offended."

Obama- Fort Hood Massacre Was ‘Work Place Violence’
Obama and Liberal Democrats embraces Muslims acts of terrorism and seeks to appease them by referring to the massacre as ‘Work Place Violence’ rather than an attack by a Muslim inspired terrorist. Obama totally DISRESPECTS THE THIRTEEN PEOPLE KILLED, THEIR FAMILIES, CHRISTIANITY, and AMERICA!!
The Fort Hood massacre that took place on November 5, 2009 at Fort Hood, the most populous U.S. military installation in the world, located just outside Killeen, Texas, was the worst shooting ever to take place on an American military base. In the course of the shooting, Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army Major serving as a psychiatrist and a Muslim, killed 13 people, one of whom was pregnant, and wounded 29 others.
Hasan is an American-born Muslim most likely radicalized by other American-born Muslims. Internal Army reports indicate officers within the Army had discussed what they characterized as Hasan’s tendencies toward radical Islam since 2005. Additionally, investigations before and after the shooting discovered e-mail communications between Hasan and Yemen-based cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who quickly declared Hasan a hero, as “fighting against the U.S. army is an Islamic duty.”
According to U.S. government officials Anwar al-Awlaki was a senior talent recruiter and motivator who was involved with planning operations for the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda. Al-Awlaki was considered to be such a threat that the U.S. deployed unmanned aircraft in Yemen to search for and kill him. He was finally killed in a drone attack in Yemen on September 30, 2011.
Now we learn that the Defense Department has reclassified the Fort Hood massacre as “workplace violence.” We know that Maj. Hassanshouted “Allahu Akbar” (Arabic for “God is Great”) after firing a total of 214 rounds at his fellow soldiers. When the shooting ended, he was still carrying 177 rounds of ammunition in his pockets, contained in both 20- and 30-round magazines.
The act was premeditated. A senior law enforcement official said that a review of Hasan’s computer and his multiple e-mail accounts revealed that he visited websites espousing radical Islamist ideas.
It’s typical of the Obama administration to deny any link between Islam and violence, even when it is shouted at them and dead bodies are the result. As you can suspect, lots of people are terribly upset and are speaking out, as Fox News reports:
Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday blasted the Defense Department for classifying the Fort Hood massacre as workplace violence and suggested political correctness is being placed above the security of the nation’s Armed Forces at home.
During a joint session of the Senate and House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday, the Maine Republican referenced a letter from the Defense Department depicting the Fort Hood shootings as workplace violence. She criticized the Obama administration for failing to identify the threat as radical Islam.
Rep. Peter King of New York, the Republican chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said military service members are “symbols of America’s power, symbols of America’s might. And if [military personnel] can be killed, then that is a great propaganda victory for al Qaeda,” King told Fox News.
King takes his argument a step further. He claims that “there is a serious threat within the military from people who have enlisted who are radical jihadists.” Radical Islamists use our constitutional freedoms to sabotage our system of government from the inside. Once inside, they will work to shut the door on any dissent. That’s what organizations like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (C.A.I.R.) have been doing.
