Obama helps woman with husband's resume

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama may help Jennifer Wedel's husband find a job. Whether he gets her vote is another question.

Two days after Obama talked with Wedel during an online town hall and offered to take a look at her unemployed husband's resume, Wedel said the president has followed through.

Wedel told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday that she got a call from a White House deputy chief of staff, Alyssa Mastromonaco, who told her Obama had made a personal point of making sure the matter was taken care of. Mastromonaco said the resume was sent to contacts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where the couple lives.

Now Wedel's husband Darin has been contacted by several recruiters, and Wedel said she's grateful.

But Wedel, a Republican, said that may not be enough to get her vote unless Obama also improves some of his job policies.

"Just because he's able to send a resume out, that's not going to be a vote factor," Wedel said.

"We're just one American," she said. "There are thousands of Americans just like my husband with no job."

Wedel wants Obama to look at limiting the number of visas going to high-tech workers from foreign countries, the issue she raised with him Monday evening in the forum hosted by Google Plus. Wedel was able to question Obama in a live video chat room known as a Hangout.

Obama expressed surprise during their exchange that Darin Wedel was out of work, saying that the word he was getting from industry was that fields like semiconductor engineering were in demand and Darin Wedel should be able to get a job. Obama also said he found the situation "interesting," a comment Republicans have subsequently used to attack the president by suggesting he's out of touch with the concerns of the unemployed.

Jennifer Wedel said Wednesday that she felt like she was "hushed up a little bit" by Obama when they spoke, but that she also found him candid and appreciated his accessibility. "I don't think any other president has shown that outreach," Wedel said.

Publicity stunt and meaningless unless he's willing to do the same thing for millions of unemployed workers. I would appreciate it if starts with me.

Someone asked what kind of jobs (majority Union jobs) the pipeline would create….let’s see… we have welders, fitters, crane operators, excavator operators, truck drivers, mechanics, journeymen, electricians, plumbers, caterers, surveyors’, cementers, carpenters, housing staff, cooks, dishwashers, ect….. Then when the pipeline hits the gulf…we will have refinery personnel, operators, roustabouts, crane operators, mechanics, maintenances personnel, drivers, welders, fitters, electricians, carpenters, …………..
Then when the oil is pumped onto the vessels we have longshoreman, plant operators, crane operators, riggers, able bodied seaman, pumpers, transfer personnel, riggers, electricians, mechanics ………….
This is not counting the services that employ other workers..restaurants..cooks, delivery drivers, doctors, grocery store employees, supply stores, increase in state employees to handle services..increase in utility companies to handle demands, and as employees come form far and near for work then we have to increase services….nurses, doctors, hospital and doctor office staff, school employees, police employees, road crews……..
And as the work force grows in an area so does the tax generated to that state, county (or parish) and to the federal government..
Yep Obama is right, we don’t need those pipeline jobs……or do we…

Yeah. I build pipelines for a living. For the last 4 years, I've worked on the original Keystone pipeline and others. You just can't imagine the positive impact that a project of this magnitiude has on the local economies. Would have been an easy way to employ tens of thousands of people, but.... the President must first cater to his envirenmental base before worrying about job creation. After all, it's an election year.

Yep, the usurper-in-chief is in a tough spot. Who provides more votes, the eco terrorists or the unions? hmm, can he cater to both? watch and see.

their are way too may Non-American workers coming to the USA and working for lower than usual wages thus taking jobs away from qualified Americans because of corporate greed . The money saved goes into the pockets of high level corporate executives. Or they send whole divisions like manufacturing and customer services, online and phone, to India or Pakistan put even more workers on the streets. These people and their govts don't even like America, just USA dollars.
      • just me 3 mths ago
and then we also send these same countries foreign aide, boggles the mind.

Get rid of the #$%$ undocumated workers before they destroy the US

Only 1% of the nations budget goes to foreign countries. Also it's not Obama fault American businesses are greedy and the CEO's of companies would rather make millions of dollars by outsourcing jobs to people who will do it for less. That's smart on their part. Obama's even countered against that by raising taxes for the wealthy and has convinced numerous CEO's to bring the jobs back here. The ignorance and greed of my fellow Americans is appalling.

Mr. President since you can only help one person at a time how about me? You know where I live, the Mrs. knows what I eat, your security team has my x-rays from the airport, well I need help too. Would like a new car that does not guzzle gas and is newer than eleven years old, would like my mortgage completely paid, a friend of mine is struggling too. I do not spend on clothing anymore, not even at Target. You have all my secrets so can you help please? I would appreciate it.

I wonder how many job offers he turned down over three years because he thought the pay wasn't enough?
    • Anonymous33  •  3 mths ago
OK, now how about helping the other 16 million unemployed folks, or is that too much to ask?
    • Maggie  •  3 mths ago
As much as I want to commend Mr. Obama, there is something in that whole situation that bothers me. The fact that you have to "know somebody" to get a job anymore. It's really a case of not "What you know" but "who you know." I can't claim to know anything about the semi conductor business - but the fact that it's an engineering type field and that gentleman was having troubles finding a job, should show you that even the "fields were people are always needed" - even then, it's hard to find a job in a down economy. It's frustrating to those who are out of work who NEED jobs to find that someone else got the job they applied for simply because they had an "in."

Which is it people? The government is supposed to take care of us or the government should stay out of our business. I'm starting to think that some of you have not a clue.

We need to demand American products which will create American jobs! Stop buying from other countries and get our economy back on track!!!
    • A Yahoo! User  •  Mentor, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
WOW do ya think they have time to do all us unemployed persons resume?
    • Brmm  •  Medford, Oregon  •  3 mths ago
This is an important issue... We have high wage earners ... many of them... who can barely speak English. They have been recruited by Con Agra and other big corporations. What really made me sad was haveing visited 3 national parks this past summer almost all the concession and gift shop workers were temporary workers from other countries. That is pretty disheartning when in this country students need jobs to pay tuition.

can you say ELECTION YEAR. helping 1 person is great, but how about the other 3 million that need help.
    • John T.  •  3 mths ago
What happened to his "an America where everyone has an equal chance, a fair shot.".? I guess that doesn't apply to people that can get close to the guy and give him a resume so, he can make a P.R. opportunity of it. This guy is so phony it makes one want to vomit!
    • Bryan  •  3 mths ago
On the same note as looking into Visas for high-tech employees, they also need to start raising taxes on businesses that outsource. Enough is enough. You're making American money, you can employ American workers.
