Obama to High-Priced Universities: 'You're on Notice'

President Obama announced Friday a plan to limit college tuition costs by punishing schools that don't keep prices down. The proposed funding changes were just one part of sweeping plans released by the White House.

"We can't keep subsidizing skyrocketing tuition," he said. "Colleges and universities need to do their part to keep costs down as well ... We are putting colleges on notice--you can't assume you can jack up tuition every single year."

According to the White House, Obama will propose reforms to cut funding for schools that raise tuition and shift money to universities that "do their fair share to keep tuition affordable, provide good value, and serve needy students well."Obama also wants to create a new higher education leg of his "Race to the Top" education competition. The proposed program would split $1 billion among states who are "willing to drive systemic change in their higher education policies and practices, while doing more to contain their tuition."

The president's speech in front of a group of students at the University of Michigan comes on the heels of his State of the Union remarks Tuesday, where he emphasized the importance of making college affordable for families.

"The most daunting challenge can be the cost of college," he said Tuesday. He urged Congress to prevent interest rates on subsidized Stafford student loans from doubling from 3.4 to 6.8 percent, as they're set to do this summer.

In recent years, the federal government has tried to make the cost of college more transparent to students and parents. The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 required all colleges and universities to supply a "net price calculator" to help families estimate the cost of attending each institution. The requirement went into effect in October.

Friday, Obama proposed a "College Scorecard," a publicly available information sheet that would grade colleges based on total cost, graduation rates, and potential earnings.

While he's doing this demand he will also be pushing for free higher education for illegals' children. CA followed his call and has been the first and immediately tuition went up for those who were here legally....Obama gives/talks with one hand and takes with the other....IF tuition IS reduced for all and the Dream Act is passed nationally. How many educators in the higher institutions will continue to teach?? Well, we may have more foreign teachers????? Let's cut the President's and legislators' salaries, especially when they call for waste spending and pork spending!

Just like with housing, we overincentivize low interest rates for college tuition so that everybody can go to college/buy a house. After you give out below market rate money, the schools have tons of demand and they jack up their prices. Keep messing with the free markets, keep getting bad results.

I think there should be a definite limit to the "liberal" agendas at most colleges and universities. How about teaching real world issues. Underwater basket weaving and classes where you sit around and sing Kumbaya doesn't cut it.

Check the nearest four year college/university to where you live, and try to get the general, annual raise information for the last three years for the professors. In many cases you'll find that many of them are receiving 2% - 4% annual raises while students and their families go deeper into debt. Do you think that these professors will forgo raises?? Not going to happen.
obama's plan is to get the students on his side, knowing most of the profs won't be impacted
(a small but strong group of his supporters - can't upset them), but other staff will lose their jobs. Actually a smart move by obama - too bad he's incapable of helping the country the way he helps himself. I've been there, and knows how it works. He makes some noise, and all the saps think things will get better - they very well may, but someone is going to pay for it - guess who?

Dr Obama should have taken an economics class. This is all about supply and demand. As long as people are willing to borrow $20k / yr to go to college then the universities will charge that. Now that the fed govt has taken over the student loan industry they could change everything by limiting the $ that are borrowed. Lets see if Oboma figures that one out.

What liberals don't understand is that the money he's pouring into colleges & universities isn't to educate students, it's to pay teacher union dues and pensions. OWEBAMA healthcare bill (a.k.a. Affordable Care Act) states that ALL student loans are now going to be Govt loans where debt will be forgiven if not paid in 20 years. It's a disaster! On another note, universities now offer REMEDIAL READING as a college course! When I went to school you couldn't even apply for college admission if you couldn't read. What does that say about the public school system? Unbelievable! If you want an education, teach yourself by reading everything you are interested in BEFORE you go to college because judging by what's been allowed to get degrees, you won't learn a darn thing in college.

      This is political hype.
Obama will NOT put restrictions on Universities, they are his biggest supporters and turn out THOUSANDs of liberal thinking young people a year.
Just look at the liberal socialist agenda of the University of Texas at El Paso.

Obama is truly a despicable fraud. He wants to punish schools for not keeping costs down, and whines that schools jack-up prices every year. This nitwit has run America into a abyss with uncontrolled spending at taxpayer's expense, and he has the gall to speak about keeping cost down? We cannot afford to have this fool run the country any longer.

Do away with the federal Department of Education. Education at all levels from kindergarten to graduate school is the responsibility of state and local governments.

This communist piece of human excrement think than he and his "government" can tell private enterprises what thay can and cannot do? This nothing more than this crock's campaign ploy to obtain votes from students.

We need to flush the toilet the White House has become, and use hundreds upon hundreds of a strong disinfectant to sanitize it.

And how many current college grads can't find jobs? Or working as a cashier at Walmart because NO ONE will hire them? Give me a break. 'Education' is no longer the answer to all our problems. We need realistic training programs that will allow employees to seek employment and actually 'get' a job. Not vague unrealistic promises.
