Obama losing luster with independent voters: poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Independent voters, who helped propel President Barack Obama to victory in the 2008 election, could be an obstacle in his bid for a second term in the White House, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll published on Wednesday.

A majority of independent voters have soured on Obama's presidency, disapprove of his handling of the economy and do not have a clear idea of what he hopes to accomplish if re-elected, the Times reported.

Only 31 percent of independent voters have a favorable opinion of the president and two-thirds say he has not made real progress in fixing the economy, the newspaper said.

In 2008, Obama won support from 52 percent of independent voters, compared with 44 percent who supported Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

Nearly half of independents say they have not formed an opinion of Mitt Romney, the front-runner in the Republican race for the nomination to challenge Obama in the November general election, the survey found.

Among all voters, 38 percent view Obama favorably, 45 percent unfavorably and 17 percent have no opinion, the survey showed. Voters were evenly divided in a matchup between Obama and Romney, but Obama fared better against other Republican candidates, the Times said

Looking at the Republican race, the poll suggests voters are not satisfied with the crop of candidates vying for the right to challenge Obama, the Times reported. Nearly 7 in 10 Republican voters said they want more choices.

The national telephone poll of 1,154, including 1,021 registered voters, was conducted January 12-January 17 and had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

If all the voters could vote as independent, none of the career politicians would get elected. Unfortunately, too many people are gullible enough to fall for empty promises, lies and propaganda of the lobbyist media.

Independents are the true indicator of a president's success or failure as a leader.
If an incumbent scratches enough support amongst them to win, then they probably did a good job in the public eye. The fact that Obama has soured so on this group is proof that he's not what he advertised himself to be.
As a staunch 'Right-Wing Extremist,' it is easy for me to dislike his platform as I fundamentally disagree with his handling of virtually every issue... but when people that have more moderate goals start leaving in droves, it speaks volumes on one's performance or lack thereof.

Whatever he says he's going to do, ask yourself why he hasnt done it in the last four years.

Dave: "live in California everyone here likes Obama "

You left out Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer and Maxine Waters...

Maxine Waters has held dominion over the black people of Watts, CA for over twenty years, and Watts is worse now than it was when she began representing them. Telling the Tea Party to "go to hell" was the easy applause line for Waters. She returned to her mansion, and her constituents remain high from their hit of the political crack of hatred. Maxine wants to nationalize oil companies....Alla Venezuela.....

Boxer: Supported passage of Cap-and-Trade energy legislation. Voted YES on $2 billion more for Cash for Clunkers program. Cosponsored DREAM Act, Supports granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. Asked general to call her "SENATOR" instead of "Ma'am", Voted NO on across-the-board spending cut.

and Pelosi..........nothing needs to be said........The women has a screw loose...

I voted for Barack Obama on '08. I didn't have "Koolaid drinker" level expectations of the guy, but I certainly couldn't believe he ran on "CHANGE" but after elected had the gall to surround himself with every old school Wall St hack with a pulse. And govern accordingly.

I believe he has turned out to be the biggest bait and switch in American political history. I will write in my vote- first time in my life. Come what may.

That' s Change I Can Believe In.

Sure glad he voted against the Canadian oil pipe line. I'm just getting used to these high gas prices. I mean, why would we want to get oil from our friends, when we can get it from Countries who want us dead. This decision alone just guaranteed my vote against him. Our Country needs a FRIENDLY SOURCE of OIL. Obama sure didn't waste time loaning money to Brazil so his buddy SOROS can drill for it down in South America. If we can put a robot on Mars I am sure we can safely transport oil through a pipeline located on dry ground, cant we?

This isn't rocket science here. The man is not getting the job done. Going on four years of blaming Bush instead of getting the job done himself. Bush is not in office. Obama is. What has Obama done? Nothing, absolutely nothing except take extravagant vacations on the taxpayers coin.
