Obama makes student loan appeal in Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — President Barack Obama tells a boisterous crowd of students that keeping federal student loan rates low is as much about helping the broader economy as it is about meeting their financial needs
He says House Republicans want to maintain current low loan rates only by cutting other assistance to low income students.
He tells University of Iowa students: "These guys don't get it."
He says: "If you do well, the economy does well."
Obama was on the final stop of a two-day, three-campus tour to draw attention to 3.4 percent student loan rates that are about to double without congressional action.
Obama's broader mission was to make a pitch to an important voting bloc of young people who provided much of the energy toward his election in 2008.
