Obama: No decision on oil pipeline from Canada

DENVER (AP) — President Barack Obama said Wednesday his administration has made no decision on whether a Canadian company can proceed with plans for a transnational oil pipeline to Texas.

A protester during Obama's appearance at the University of Colorado Denver yelled out that the president should say no to the contested Keystone XL project.

Obama said his administration was looking into the issue but had made no decision. He told the protester: "I know your deep concern about it. We will address it."

Obama's comments came as a State Department official hinted that a decision on the pipeline may be delayed until next year. Officials have pledged to decide by the end of the year. The State Department has jurisdiction over the pipeline because it crosses an international border.

A senior State Department official, who asked not to be identified because the department was still reviewing the project, said, "While we are working towards a timely decision by the end of the year, our foremost commitment is to a thorough review and assessment of information and to make a decision based on the best available data and analysis."

The proposed pipeline has prompted protests nationally and demonstrators have been arrested in front of the White House. Demonstrators protested outside one of Obama's fundraisers Tuesday in San Francisco.

The pipeline would carry oil derived from tar sands in Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Houston and Port Arthur, Texas. The 1,700-mile pipeline would travel through Montana, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

In a related development, 13 Democratic lawmakers and a Democratic-leaning independent sent a Wednesday letter requesting that the State Department inspector general investigate the department's handling of the pipeline application.

Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., along with 11 House members, said they were disturbed by media reports that a company that performed an environmental review on behalf of the State Department had listed pipeline developer TransCanada as a "major client."

The lawmakers asked the inspector general to look at all contractual or financial relationships between the consultant, Houston-based Cardno Entrix, and TransCanada.

They also asked for a review of State Department emails involving a TransCanada lobbyist who had worked in Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.

Clinton told The Associated Press earlier this month that she had "no reason to believe" there was a conflict of interest involving the TransCanada lobbyist, Paul Elliott.

The underground pipeline would carry an estimated 700,000 barrels of oil a day, doubling the capacity of an existing pipeline from Canada.

Supporters say the line could significantly reduce U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil, while opponents say it would bring "dirty oil" that requires huge amounts of energy to extract and could cause an ecological disaster in case of a spill.

      "Obama: No decision".

Pretty much sums up his "presidency".

Study and evaluation will be better than the impulsive wrong turns made by the one who claimed "I'm the decider".

oblamer hasn't tested the polls yet, therefore, he doesn't know which way to go with this one.
    • otto  •  7 mths ago
Said it before and I'll say it again. Instead of building a pipeline all the way to Texas, build more refining capacity in North Dakota and Wyoming. It aint rocket science!!!!!!
      • J 7 mths ago
They still have to run a pipeline to Texas to refine it. There are no refineries in N Dakota and Wyoming
      • Jeff R 7 mths ago
Read Otto's comment again - he suggested that refineries be built up there, sheesh.
      • nomoresurprises 7 mths ago
        Exactly.
    • Terry  •  7 mths ago
Only if the pipeline re-routes through Chicago where they can siphon off their commission.
    • harp  •  7 mths ago
Why go that far? Oil refineries are already in Montana in billings which is so much closer then Texas.
      • privy 7 mths ago
Have you ever heard of shipping costs? Pipeline transfer is much less expensive.
      • cocheta 7 mths ago
But you can't export the products from the Montana refineries as easily as you can the ones from the refineries in Texas.
      • WHITTSITT 7 mths ago
Correct, Privy and Cocheta, And, all refineries are not the same, some are designed to run certain "slates" of crude. Meaning that heavy crude and light sweet crude require different processes. Far more economical to pipe the crude to refineries that can process it in an economical way. No numbers given, it makes more sense to spend, say 1 billion for a pipeline than build a new refinery at ??? billion.

      • Irene P 7 mths ago
be sure and tell the repubs you need jobs, most of them have laid off thousands,Rick Snott bragged about the jobs he created, does not tell you how many he laid off first.

That's a real poser for 0bama. Environmentalists or union jobs?

The political pos will side with environmentalists, bigger numbers. Thousands of good paying jobs lost again to Tree Huggers.

Thousands of good paying jobs in the Gulf, lost to environmentalists.

But he is out on the road touting bogus job plans that will yield no lasting jobs.
    • mudslide  •  7 mths ago
The only way this goes through is if the union gets the contract and there are bills passed that puts federal oversight on it, and taxes it to the point where lobbyists will shut up long enough to get a kickback - then.....maybe....
    • GEY  •  7 mths ago
Build it now, we need the oil and the jobs.

Narcissists are charming and captivating and sometimes downright ludicrous. The beauty of being a narcissist is that even tho' disaster stares you in the face you feel neither doubt or remorse. In a case study researchers asked a pair of participants to undertake a task that was rigged to fail.most people tend to protect their partner, sharing either the credit or the blame, but the narcissist will say " It's totally the other guys fault". Everyone around a narcissist is bound to become his victim. People are sucked voluntarily or involuntarily into the turbulence that is his life, into the black hole that is his personality. If you think Obama has or will change think again. He feels no doubt or remorse as disaster stares him and all of US in the face and his only goal is to get as many votes as he can so he can get back to golfing. Deja Moo=the feeling you've heard this #$%$ before!

Obozo is incapable of making a decision until he checks the political winds. The construction of this pipeline is a good thing. It will bring jobs and help us wean ourselves off of Mideast oil.

Unless you like battling the Muslim extremists and believe your fellow countrymen should live in poverty, you'll agree.
