Obama: No magic bullet to lower gas prices

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says there is no easy answer to the problem of rising energy prices, dismissing Republican plans to address the problem as little more than gimmicks.

"We know there's no silver bullet that will bring down gas prices or reduce our dependence on foreign oil overnight," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "But what we can do is get our priorities straight and make a sustained, serious effort to tackle this problem."

Oil prices are approaching last year's highs as tensions increase over Iran's nuclear program. The rise pushed gasoline prices Friday to a national average of $3.65 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year. A spike in gas prices is normal in spring, but it came earlier than usual this year in large part because of world fears that the growing confrontation with Iran will crimp oil supplies. Iran is the world's third-largest crude supplier.

Rising oil prices weigh on the economy, pushing leisure and business travel costs higher. Every 1-cent increase in the price of gasoline costs the economy $1.4 billon, analysts say.

Obama said Republicans have one answer to the oil pinch: Drill.

"You know that's not a plan, especially since we're already drilling," Obama said, echoing his remarks earlier in the week. "It's a bumper sticker."

Obama is pushing what he calls an "all-of-the-above" approach to the problem of limited energy resources, meaning an attempt to seek out alternative energy sources while reducing consumption of traditional fuels.

In the Republican address, Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison blamed the rise in gasoline prices partly on the Obama administration, which she said has blocked some potential new sources of oil and gas.

"We can't slow down global demand for oil and gas, but we can do a lot more here at home to assure that we have the energy we need and to halt skyrocketing costs," she said. "President Obama's policy has resulted in an unprecedented slowdown in new exploration and production of oil and gas."

For all the political claims, economists say there's not much a president of either party can do about gasoline prices. Certainly not in the short term. But it's clear that people are concerned — a new Associated Press-GfK poll says 7 in 10 Americans find the issue deeply important — so it's sure to be a political issue through the summer.

The price of gasoline, which is made from crude oil, has soared with oil prices. The national average jumped by nearly 12 cents per gallon in a week, with state averages above $4 per gallon in California, Alaska and Hawaii.

At $3.65 per gallon, gasoline is still below last year's high of $3.98 and the record $4.11 set in 2008.

Sure there is a magic bullet. Repeal the Commodity Futures Modernization Act that took the SEC out of commodity trades. This is not a supply problem. In fact, our consumption has gone down over the last ten years while the prices of oil have continued to rise. This is an under-regulated commodities market problem. All the new drilling or pipelines in the world won't do a thing to keep speculators from driving the prices up.

yes, but it is world demand problem, still you make a good point
      • carol 3 mths ago
Intellectual Terrorist - our energy reserves, including oil, are enormous. If we entered the world market, supply would rise and the law of supply and demand would control the market. Unlike yourself, I'm not an intellectual, but any fool knows that if there's more of something, the cost falls. But this is a situation we've never witnessed before. China's and India's economies are growing so rapidly that their demand is unceasing. The few coal mining companies left in the U. S. since the current POTUS closed down 26 of them are barging the coal to our seaports where it's being loaded onto ships bound for China. Maybe if we outlawed the sale of critical resources to foreign countries, but the coal companies still have the right to sell their coal and keep their workers employed. It's a catch-22 with no easy answers, and the current administration has made it doubly difficult. This man CANNOT be elected to another term. I can't believe so many could be so stupid.

LIES....LIES....and more LIES!!! Reinstate Glass-Steagal. Kick Wall Street and high frequency trading out of the futures markets. Problem solved, the price of oil drops by 35% over night.
      • Paul e 3 mths ago
Can not do that. . . . TOO MUCH MONEY is at stake! GREED PREVAILS!!!
      • Beware 3 mths ago
Oil is traded on the world market, not just the US stock exchange. Reinstating Glass-Steagal would have no effect.

How about building a few new refineries? Or at least upgrading the ones we have to newer cleaner technology? This is a question you never seem to see asked of him.
      • CafeenMan 3 mths ago
Sure. And why don't you invent a better typewriter? Here's why... because it's a technology on the way out. We need to take the painful step of investing (and losing) money developing new energy sources. We're going to be in a world of hurt due to the short-term thinking from the powers that be. Instead of being prepared when oil is harder to find and much more expensive we will have mass anarchy.
      • SS 3 mths ago
your right and wrong cm, jets, big rigs, cargo ships, trains many power plants etc will use oil for foreseeable decades, the worlds still a LONG way off from leaving oil as a energy source
      • JJJ 3 mths ago
the rise and fall in Gas prices rest with 2 factors!!!!..#1 is the EPA..#2 is oil speculators and these 2 factors are joined at the "hip" 1 hand feeds the other;s hand.do away with the EPA and all there lobbyist and there stupid minded people that hold back growth by protecting 1-eyed pigeons, or closed down a logging Ind because of 1 stupid white bird that nobody has ever seen BUT those who back the EPA!!!!...

If OPEC raises there prices no country has a say.....that keystone pipeline will not give US more fuel because ALl that oil is going over-seas to CHINA....China is Canada;s biggest foreign Buyer!!!!!!

I heard him say he wanted gas at $5.00 a gallon, as long as it gets there slowly. What an idiot. He has done nothing in 3 years to get us more and cheaper fuel. He wants us all on the public bus together.
    • j  •  Owensboro, Kentucky  •  3 mths ago
We exported more fuel in 2011 than we imported. Fuel was the biggest export we had in 2011. Ergo no shortage. Try enacting a law prohibiting exportation of our oil. That curtails free enterprise? In WW2 meat, sugar, gasoline, and shoes were rationed because we were in a state of emergency. Aren't we fast heading toward one now? Someday we may desperately need the fuel we are exporting.

In 2008, candidate Obama blamed Bush for the then (high?) gas prices. Guess it was OK for him to blame the sitting President when he was a candidate. Not OK for him to accept any responsibility now that he is in this chair. What a chicken sheet!
    • SalP  •  Ocala, Florida  •  3 mths ago
This from the Senator who blamed the Bush administration for high gas prices??!! LOLOLOL, we certainly got what we deserved in voting for Oblamer.

This is crazy. How can an american president say thrash like this?? Does this mean he has lost hope?? This is America. Where all things are possible. We went to the moon. We defeated Nazist Germany, Fasicist Italy and imperial Japan in 3 years. We came out of a depression.

How about drilling for oil here in the USA? We have China and other countries drilling off our coast yet we arent allowed to thanks to his policies.

      Under Liberalism 3 years now
food prices have never been higher.
      Fuel prices are exploding
      home prices continue to fall
      15% unemployed according to CBO
      NDAA passed
debt ceiling increased again and still no budget
16 trillion in debt from 106 when took over
Banks are paying no interest on your money- yet they are supposed to be fixed according to Team Obama
Trickle up poverty is growing because the disposable income is being used to pay the higher fuel and food prices.
young people do not have jobs
I am not impressed with Democrat Leadership and to make excuses 3 years out is wrong.
Either Chit or get off the pot

We Know there is 1.4 trillion barrels of Oil or 230 years of US independent isolated from the world oil,We also know there are trillions of cubic yards of natural gas again over 100 years supply as we build new options. The Republicans have been saying for 40+ years to drill and everytime the Democrats say it will take 5 to 10 years to get it to market and shoot it down. Based on the 40+ years of talk we could have at least 400% more production to 800% More...Or under 1.30 a gallon gas at the pump had they acted when it was sent to congress year after year for the last 45 years
    • zed  •  3 mths ago
Ha ha ha ha ha... Obama pays lip service saying Americans aren't stupid... he believes Americans know that drilling for more oil will not solve the oil problem... then he proposes algae as the next great replacement source of energy... What a Jackwad... Are you as really as dumb as Obama thinks?????
