Is Obama now the 2012 underdog?

With the economy floundering, a new Gallup poll puts a generic GOP candidate ahead of President Obama by the widest margin yet

For the first time, President Obama trails a generic Republican opponent by a statistically significant margin, according to a new Gallup poll. Obama held a slight edge in May, but a generic Republican pulled ahead in June, and this month, that nameless Republican surged ahead by eight points, 47 percent to 39 percent. That's the biggest lead for anyone since Gallup began surveying registered voters on their picks for the 2012 election. Everyone knew Obama's approval ratings were being weighed down by growing gripes about the wars, and the unraveling of the economic recovery — but with numbers this bad, is his re-election becoming a longshot?

Yes. Obama has gone from favorite to underdog: It's highly unusual for an incumbent president to be trailing so badly at this point, says Peter Wehner at Commentary, although Obama's nosedive isn't exactly surprising. An economy as sickly as this one always weighs down the occupant of the White House, and "Obama is not exempt from the rules that apply to everyone else." With less than 40 percent support, and the economy souring, 2012 is looking grim for Obama.
    "Recent Gallup poll not surprising"

A fantasy Republican leads Obama, but a real one won't: It's too bad for the GOP that you can't "beat somebody with nobody," says Robert Stein at Connecting.the.Dots. Obama's prospects will brighten considerably once Republicans are forced to choose a candidate from their "field of has-beens and never-will-bes." It's one thing for stressed-out voters to be vent their anger at the man in the White House; it's quite another to actually vote to put the wobbly Mitt Romney or downright weird Michele Bachmann in charge of the free world.
    "President Generic"

Well, there's no denying the trend looks bad for Obama: The 2012 election is a long way from being decided, says Scared Monkeys, but "it is safe to say that the 'kill Osama' bounce is over." As the economy worsens, unemployment creeps back up, "and Obama continually tries to play scare politics with the debt limit, more and more Americans are saying — ABO, anyone but Obama." If your name is Romney, or Bachmann, or Pawlenty, that's good news. If your name is Obama, it most definitely is not.

The one group that I know will vote for Obama in 2012 are the moochers. They are the ones that don't want to work and have others pay heir bills and Obamais their man.
      • Terron 10 mths ago
White people are mooching now lol, and the only people who will vote for republicans are caucasians who love war and love to spend all our money on weapons. You hate helping people, you're born to kill people that's why you love war & weapons
      • Ralph 10 mths ago
Terron, looks like you have your own hate issues. You sound like a racist !
      • Amanda 10 mths ago
I can't figure out if Terron is a troll or an idiot.

Normally I am a Democrat, but next year I will vote against Obama. Adios Barack.
      • Linda 10 mths ago
Yeah, you do that...and let nut job Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin or maybe even Rick Perry run the show. Then you will really have a mess on your hands...not only will people not have jobs, seniors will lose all their social security and medicare benefits.

This is the time to stand with the president. He has made some headway, but cannot solve all of the problems instantly. He has kept us from a full scale depression, and when he got into office he had eight years of the Bush mess to contend with.

Linda why do you make stupid statements about things you know nothing about? I have not heard one republican say that they wanted to do what you say. But if you continue to elect democrats for the next couple of decades then you can be sure that those programs will not survive due to lack of financing.

Be truthful now, are you not more comfortable changing diapers or cooking in the kitchen?
      • ben 10 mths ago
Linda is right all we can see right now is the giant snow ball Bush rolled down the hill for eight years. to expect Obama to stop something that size in less than one term just isn't realistic. Don't fall the GOP long con game

Unless he can start doing something other than blame Bush he is not going anywhere. Even the media is falling out of love with him.
      • MarkW 10 mths ago
His supporters always have the card of calling people that disagree with him racist.

        Mark W,

When you elect a community organizer with zero practical experience to do a President's job, you WILL get below-standard results as I think the last 3 years or so have proven beyond any reasonable doubt.

The reason he won his first election was because he knew to promise EXACTLY what people wanted to hear at the time, and while some of us smelled a rat, enough believed it to ignore his total lack of experience/valid credentials and proceeded to elect someone to the highest office in the land who was grossly unqualified to handle the responsibilities and intricacies of it.

Now that people have seen with their own eyes and experienced in their lives the many failures of this man over the course of 3 years, many have come to realize the dreadful mistake they made. Never forget America that when something looks too good to be true, it is. I'd say we've learned our lesson, now we just need to correct it in 2012.

We need to bring back GW Bush right?
      • Sam C 10 mths ago
        Bush, Obama....what's the difference?
      • Richard 10 mths ago
I would rather have either Bush but that is not likely to happen so why do we not look at both candidates and figure out which would do the better job in the WH?

Would you like to compare Bush's record of job creation, inflation and unemployment with your boy Carter?

ineffective leadership and overspending ( whats not to like)

As a young black mother, I hate to admit that I will not be able to vote for Obama in 2012. His "us vs. them" class warfare policy doesn't feel like racial progress to me.
    • Mary anne  •  10 mths ago
Let's just take the money from every candidate's campaign fund, Dem, or Rep and pay off all our debts...end of story....what a waste!

A Cook County politician in over his head?! Oh how surprising. Why Chicago, Cook County and Illinois politicians are the pinnacle of statesmen. Just go check the prisons.

A majority of voters in 2008 wanted "change". Well, they got it!
    • StillLaughing  •  10 mths ago
The day before the election in 2010, the DNC and party faithful were still forecasting an upset. Instead, it was the biggest rout in US history. The media sells a lot of airtime to both parties so they will continue to try to make it a game. But when Generic wins over the Brand, 16 months out, it may be time to have the fat lady sing.

Plus, President Obama just can't stop the gaffes. Just said his birthday was next week in a press conference but his "Birth Certificate" says three weeks from now. Talk about feeding the alligators!
    • Ron  •  10 mths ago
He fooled me once. Not gonna happen again.
    • Dave  •  10 mths ago
Lets see... he's got involved in a third war, unemployment continues to be sky high despite his promise that it would be coming down after he passed the 800 billion dollar "Stimulus" boondoggle.

He changes his story every time he talks and is NEVER confronted by the lame stream media.

He hasn't provided a single "real" spending cut into the debt ceiling issue.. just plays class warfare, tries then to scare Granny and Grandpa and now he REFUSES to provide any specifics!!!

NEWSFLASH TO ALL YOU BIG GOVERNMENT LIBERAL FACISTS

      WE ARE BROKE!!!!

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) used the race card this afternoon. And that is unfortunate. Because there is no difference between the POTUS and every other elected person in Washington, D.C. You are all just Politicians! Otherwise known as snake oil, flim flam, con artists who lie to the American people while stealing and wasting our

If you could retired at 62 with full benfits then jobs would be open up,If each state would hire crews to clean up thier whole state then jobs would open up,If united states would open up our oils fields then the gas price would go down and it need to no higher then a dollar a gallon then people would buy more gas to travel and do things which in turn would make more jobs open up.there is ways to make the economy better but they just wont do it when need to get rid of everyone in congress and show them that we are tried of the way things are and unitl the people do this then nothing is going to change.
    • charles  •  10 mths ago
