    Obama to offer his own deficit reduction package

    WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is proposing $1.5 trillion in new tax revenue as part of his long-term deficit reduction plan.

    The president on Monday will announce a proposal that includes new taxes, nearly $250 billion in reductions in Medicare spending and savings of $1 trillion from the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

    The plan includes no changes in Social Security and does not include an increase in the Medicare eligibility age, which the president had considered this summer.

    The president's plan is as much an opening bid as it is a political statement designed to draw contrasts with Republicans, who control the House of Representatives.

    The new taxes in particular have little or no chance of passing Congress as proposed.

      do you think that if energy prices were to be more reasonable that it would help the economy take off?
      the last time oil was selling at 85 dollars a barrel we were paying 2.75 a gallon for gas. if the cost of gas were to reach 2.75 again that would keep alot of money in our pockets. we would spend more thus helping the economy to gain some speed.

        Obama has destroyed the value of the dollar, so we pay more to foreign suppliers. He won't let us drill. He, in facts, wants higher prices to make us "green." The suppliers make 8% and the government makes about 30%. Obama is the problem.

      You shouldn't worry. This idiotic idea will never pass. Not because it is a terrible idea, but because the GOP will shoot it down outright or stymie it in red tape until it is meaningless.
      Oh, and the GOP will not do this because of patriotic duty, they’ll kill it just to make the democrats look bad, as if they really needed any help.
      Send all of them home and start over. Couldn’t be any worse! Maybe a new group would really represent their constituents instead of filling their pockets with our tax dollars and wasting even more creating endless useless workgroups and panels.
