Obama opens Europe trip in the Netherlands

SCHIPHOL, Netherlands (AP) — President Barack Obama is opening a European trip that will be dominated by the West's dispute with Russia.

Obama arrived in the Netherlands Monday morning after an overnight flight from Washington. The president will hold two days of meetings with other world leaders at the Nuclear Security Summit.

But a geopolitical crisis with Russia is casting a shadow over Obama's visit. The president will discuss the matter Monday with China's leader and at a hastily arranged meeting of the Group of Seven leading industrial nations.

The U.S. and Europe say Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine is a violation of international law.

Obama will also visit Belgium, Italy and Saudi Arabia during his weeklong trip.
