Obama says no quick fixes to energy squeeze, derides Republican drilling plan as a gimmick

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says there is no easy answer to the problem of rising energy prices and he's dismissing Republican solutions as little more than gimmicks.

"We know there's no silver bullet that will bring down gas prices or reduce our dependence on foreign oil overnight," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "But what we can do is get our priorities straight and make a sustained, serious effort to tackle this problem."

Oil prices are approaching last year's highs as tensions increase over Iran's nuclear program. The rise pushed gasoline prices Friday to a national average of $3.65 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year. A spike in gas prices is normal in spring, but it came earlier than usual this year in large part because of world fears that the growing confrontation with Iran will crimp oil supplies. Iran is the world's third-largest crude supplier.

Rising oil prices weigh on the economy, pushing leisure and business travel costs higher. Every 1-cent increase in the price of gasoline costs the economy $1.4 billon, analysts say.

Obama said Republicans have one answer to the oil pinch: drill.

"You know that's not a plan, especially since we're already drilling," Obama said, echoing his remarks earlier in the week. "It's a bumper sticker."

Obama is pushing what he calls an "all-of-the-above" approach to the problem of limited energy resources, meaning an attempt to seek out alternative energy sources while reducing consumption of traditional fuels.

In the Republican address, Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison blamed the rise in gasoline prices partly on the Obama administration, which she said has blocked some potential new sources of oil and gas.

"We can't slow down global demand for oil and gas, but we can do a lot more here at home to assure that we have the energy we need and to halt skyrocketing costs," she said. "President Obama's policy has resulted in an unprecedented slowdown in new exploration and production of oil and gas."

For all the political claims, economists say there's not much a president of either party can do about gasoline prices. Certainly not in the short term. But it's clear that people are concerned — a new Associated Press-GfK poll says 7 in 10 Americans find the issue deeply important — so it's sure to be a political issue through the summer.

The price of gasoline, which is made from crude oil, has soared with oil prices. The national average jumped by nearly 12 cents per gallon in a week, with state averages above $4 per gallon in California, Alaska and Hawaii.

At $3.65 per gallon, gasoline is still below last year's high of $3.98 and the record $4.11 set in 2008.

I guess some of you weren't around 40 years ago, but we have been dealing with this mess since 1973 with the Arab oil embargo! We have had that long to work on alternatives but haven't. In this particular case the free market has failed us.
      • Carl 3 mths ago
Also a lack of an energy policy has failed us as well.
      • Radman61 3 mths ago
        Very true Carl.
      • Jonathan L 2 mths ago
Silver bullets would have been developed if there were ones... problem is there isn't a good alternative minus natural gas and that is just emerging as an alternative.
    • derekk  •  Denver, Colorado  •  2 mths ago
obama has never assumed any responsibility fir his actions.
    • Jay  •  3 mths ago
A good solution would be to stop buying OPEC oil, and become self sufficient again. 38 of our 50 states have oil production....and untapped reserves!
      • Snap dog 3 mths ago
You are exactly right.Every barrel we produce here is a barrel of mid east oil we dont have to buy!!! We found out recently that our old oil field here still has over 3 billion barrels of recoverable oil in the Brown Dense Formation.
      • Bill 3 mths ago
And if we got the oil from all 57 states there's no telling how much we'd have.
      • the Truth Hurts 3 mths ago
Not sure I belive this. Republicans supporting a socialist policy! State ownership of the Oil Industry
    • ST  •  2 mths ago
A real, honest, sincere liberal would be so outraged with the oil companies making so much money off of them, they would refuse to consume any more petroleum products, park their cars, ignore the mass transit and either walk or ride a bicycle to work....starting NOW. They would boycott the oil companies, pull their retirement mutual fund money out of oil companies and any company that had anything to do with petroleum products. They would be outraged at the amount of gasoline and jet fuel the president and first lady consume every time they travel and campaign to buy votes. That is what a true Democrat would do, that is what the president should do.
      • rcdubs 2 mths ago
So tell Republicans to vote to end oil subisdies and tax breaks like Obama wants to do.
      • ST 2 mths ago
Repubs, end the oil subsidies and stop taking the tax breaks!

New laws for oil & gas contract trading are required.
      1. 85 % of the oil & gas contracts can only be sold once.
      2. When you buy a contract you must take physical delivery of 85% of the oil or gasoline.
      3. 85 % of the oil & gas that come from Federal land must be be sold & used in the USA. - A national resource needs to stay in the USA. If it comes from private land it can go anywhere the price will demand.

Then a free market of supply and demand would really work.

To all my friends; Republicans, Democrats, Independents and people not affiliated with the other three, I ask you to do one simple thing if you want to know why gas is so high. Just Google the phrase "DOES THE USA EXPORT GASOLINE" and be surprised at the answer.
      • derek c 3 mths ago
YES WE DO export gas and other chemicals produced by refining oil
      • mac marine 3 mths ago
Because we do not produce enough crude oil to meet our demand, we are forced to buy it on the world market at their price. Therefore we have no control on what the refined product sells for at the pump. 2DaMax do you think we should sell the refined product for less than the cost of production? Again let me say, We deo not produce enough crude oil to meet our demand so we must buy it on the world market at a set price! Wake up
      • Jonathan L 2 mths ago
There is a global markets for refined products just as with crude. The rest of the world is bidding now. Global demand is rising while domestic demand has dropped.

"We can't drill our way out of an energy crisis..." From the man that is trying to spend his way out of a debt crisis !
    • George  •  Encino, California  •  2 mths ago
Drilling is a gimmick? but global warming is a reality?... come November we fix this mess and correct the greatest mistake ever made in this country
    • RobertG  •  3 mths ago
End naked short selling so the market can determine the price like it is supposed to.
    • Pallewog  •  3 mths ago
Liberals have been using the same #$%$ excuse for 15 #$%$ years.
    • legalswashbuckler  •  Colusa, California  •  3 mths ago
The more oil wells, the more gasoline exports. The oil companies are going to export refined gasoline and diesel fuel because they can get higher prices.
    • FKafka  •  3 mths ago
So why does he have his lap dog Geitnor come and and say we're going to open the oil reserves to offset any Iranian threat? Give us a break - those reserves will last a few weeks at most - it's all Chicago style politics at work which has never worked.
    • Bill  •  2 mths ago
the jig is up obama, your the gimmick !
    • SILLY  •  3 mths ago
      They are idiots.
    • ST  •  2 mths ago
We know there are no quick fixes you #$%$ But you have been occupying the office of president for over 3 long years. Someone needs to explain to you what it means to be "pro-active" versus being "re-active". We need someone who is the former and you are the latter. The country needs you "OUT".

Oil costs Saudi Arabia $5 a barrel to produce. A BARREL, NOT A GALLON!
    • Nance  •  3 mths ago
What priorities and efforts do you have in mind, Mr. President?
    • SRS  •  3 mths ago
“Somehow, we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” Steven Chu, Obama's Energy Secretary, September 2008 (Fuel prices in Europe are currently $9 to $10 per gallon.)

Appears they are working on achieving the goal.

The only thing this president is quick at is driving up the national debt. It is going up faster than a silver bullet.
