Debt talks have 2012 consequences for Obama

President Barack Obama continues his two-front media campaign with a White House press conference at 11.00 a.m. Monday.

Washington’s myriad political advocates will be watching, but so too will many of the nation’s swing-voting independents, whose support he needs to win back by November 2012.

The press event will take place before Obama and GOP leaders meet again on Monday to talk about a debt-ceiling deal that will allow the federal government to continue as usual.

He’s likely to use the press conference to repeat his calls for a complex $4 trillion, ten-year debt-ceiling package that combines some as-yet-unexplained mix of tax increases, accounting shifts, program changes and spending cuts.

Republican leaders rejected that proposal on Sunday, saying it would require yet more tax increases. GOP leaders want a simpler and smaller deal that offsets $2 trillion of new borrowing with a similar amount of budget cuts.

But it makes political sense for Obama to continue calling for a big deal. (Sunday debt talks wrap up with plans to meet again Monday)

If Obama’s package is approved, its tax increases would likely split the GOP some 17 months before the pivotal 2012 election, and the package’s enormous scale would help his allies portray him to swing voters as the president who mended the nation’s bleeding finances.

The American people sent us here to do the right thing not for party, but for country,” he said in a July 8 Rose Garden response to the bad news that unemployment had ticked up to 9.2 percent. “So we’re going to work together to get things done on their behalf. That’s the least that they should expect of us, not the most that they should expect of us.”

If the president’s $4 trillion package stays rejected, and is supplanted by a simpler $2 trillion deal, the president can still cast himself as the only adult in Washington D.C.

“I’ve heard reports that there may be some in Congress who want to do just enough to make sure that America avoids defaulting on our debt in the short term, but then wants to kick the can down the road when it comes to solving the larger problem of our deficit,” he declared at the start of a July 5 press conference.

“I don’t think the American people sent us here to avoid tough problems,” he continued. “That’s, in fact, what drives them nuts about Washington, when both parties simply take the path of least resistance … I believe that right now we’ve got a unique opportunity to do something big — to tackle our deficit in a way that forces our government to live within its means, that puts our economy on a stronger footing for the future, and still allows us to invest in that future.”

One of Obama’s senior advisers, David Plouffe, explained the strategy at a June 7 press event organized by Bloomberg News. Obama can win the independents, he said, because they dislike partisan disputes and prefer Washington to “get away from the stale ideas of the left or right and focus on what’s going to be right for the country.” (Boehner says ambitious $4 trillion deal isn’t happening)

Obama will need whatever boost he can get, because he’s now down to 32 percent among independents, when tested head-to-head against a “Generic Republican,” according to a Gallup poll of 914 registered voters in early June. In 2008, he got 52 percent of those voters. The “Generic Republican” earned 42 percent of the independents’ votes. A quarter of the independents, or 26 percent, declined to pick Obama or the “Generic Republican.”

There’s no political downside to Obama’s two-front strategy, assuming a deal is eventually signed to prevent the federal government from defaulting on its $14 trillion debt.

Since Obama has not personally pointed the presidential finger at any significant programs that deserve cutting, there’s no political risk either. His deputies have provided the media with a vague mix of possible cuts, such as an accounting change to Social Security, a round of unexplained cuts within the huge Medicare program, or deep but unassigned cuts in Pentagon spending. But the president has not put his name to any detailed proposal that would actually slash a program cherished by his allies.

There’s no political risk to the two-front campaign because Obama’s liberal base is still supporting him, although not as enthusiastically as it did during the halcyon days of 2008 and 2009. The Gallup poll says 81 percent of Democrats are on his side, although 13 percent declined to declare their support.

Only seven percent of Democrats say they’ll support a Republican, and 9 percent of Republicans say they’ll support Obama, says Gallup’s poll.

Liberals and progressives will support him in November 2012 because their dislike of any GOP candidate is much greater than their disappointment in President Obama’s tenure.

Obama’s economic policy is in a shambles, unemployment and debt are rising, his agencies need more loans to stay open, the debt talks are stalled, the GOP won’t raise taxes, and his administration could potentially be stumbling toward a humiliating default. Nonetheless, the president’s re-election campaign is still running strong.

I am an indépendant, and I have yet to see anything come out of the House that is helpful for the country. It seems, despite their promises, that the only thing the Republicans have been working on is the 2012 elections, and the country can go to Hades as long as the Republicans get into office. Obama has accomplished a lot more to try and help the country and get it on its feet again.

Where's that jobs bill Mr. Speaker???
      • Patriot 10 mths ago
The way our system of government works, no republican house plan can pass to benefit jobs or the Amrican people because Harry Reid and Barak Obama will not pass it!! Republicans are only a 1/3 majority. The blame is still square on democrats shoulders as they still have 2/3 the power.
      • Mike O 10 mths ago
I agree with Patriot. The Republicans still have very little power.

As someone who voted for Obama in 2008, I can honestly say that there is nothing he can do to win my vote in 2012. I can't promise it to the Republican, since I probably wouldn't vote for Palin and I don't really like Romney, but I can promise that I will never again vote for Barrack Obama.

obama has yet to display a single leadership quality. If he were captain of a ship, there would have been mutiny long ago. His snide remarks, lack of common sense and blame make him the worst leader this nation has ever had.

I'm in complete agreement, never in my lifetime have I seen a president point the finger as much as Obama, its a disgrace he represents us in the world.
      • Sandy 10 mths ago
The real disgrace was Bush. Now, he can't even leave the country without
possibly being subject to arrest. Now that is disgraceful.

if obama was in a boat that sinking, he'd drill more holes in it to let the water out.

No, that is not true - he would get out of the ship and swim to shore, and you would blame him for abandoning ship, correct?

Obama and the Democrats created this debt crisis. Giving these thieves more money is insane. It's obvious that they want to spend trillions more. Their reckless spending is putting SS and Medicare at risk of going bankrupt. Obama's plan to raise taxes on corporations is dumb because that will just cause more unemployment. Blaming the rich is marxism 101 and only fools fall for it.

It was a Capitalist society where the dream was "rise from nothing and achieve greatness", somehow that changed to "If you can't make it we'll take from someone who did"
The constant phrasing of "upper one percent", "ultra rich", "haves and have nots"
has changed peoples view of the leaders of big business. People used to stand in awe of the accomplishments of the business giants and strive to do something of their own, now they just picture them all as paris hiltons, running around partying and always on vacation. This breeds jealousy and contempt which cause's a mob mentality of "get them", further hurting our economy and driving jobs over seas.
The american dream was the limitless possibility for your future, now its the limitless amount your OWED.

yes it has. it has made the masses vote for programs to further enrich the 1 percent. the gap between wealth and poverty has been growing for 30 years. at some point it is going to snap. your greed will destroy us all.

Your ignorance will one day finally kill the "beast" that is big business and you'll be too busy pointing fingers to notice our whole economy has crashed and we are the new Rome.

I don't think Obama cares if he is reelected or not. He wants to do what is right for the country and not right for his political career. Let a Republican get the office and see if they can do any better. They can not.

I'm glad Obama is doing his best to give the Republicans a financial enima. They do too much taking in and not enough giving out. They are so thoroughly constipated and the bloating of the deficit will be relieved when they get some relief and let go of all their government perks. The entire nation will feel much, much better when Obama has completed the high colonic.

      Bingo,
I bet if obama asked you to swallow you would say with pleasure!

Does anyone have any idea where all of the Obama supporters went? These boards used to be crawling with them and now all I hear is.....................crickets.
    • RODZILLA  •  10 mths ago
Also, if you really want Obama out, then you should work on downgrading all the hype about the upcoming election.

When Americans show up at the polls, Republicans lose big, as in 2008.

When Americas voice remains silent, Republicans win, as in 2010.

The vast majority of Americans see the biggest problem of government being that big business is allowed to buy officials.

Offering up big business candidates is never going to appeal to the majority.

      You want Republicans to win?

Keeping your mouth shut is your best bet.

I think the GOP wants to send the country into depression as punishment for electing a black guy president
    • Official Version  •  10 mths ago
Supposedly, we got out of the recession two years ago, though I don't see it. Historically, small businesses and the private sector have instilled hiring and quickly rebounded in upswings. Yet, this did not happen. Either we are still in a recession or something has kept the trend in hiring different. Both point to the same thing: obamacare, frank-dodd fin. reform bill. overall lack of trust and confidence in obama and what he will do next. Solution? 16 months.

Politicians are like alcoholics they will give you all kinds of stories explaining why they need more money. They will explain how everything is going to end in ruin if they don’t get more money. They will promise this is the last time they will need it, but in the end they will just buy more booze with it, go on a bender and be back in no time asking for more. To really help them you need tough love. We need to quit enabling these addicts.
