    Obama: Signs of progress on payroll tax cuts

    WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama said Tuesday there are "hopeful signs" Congress will reach a deal to extend expiring payroll tax cuts for millions of Americans. But he urged the public to keep up the pressure on Congress until an agreement is finalized and a bill lands on his desk.

    "You're starting to hear voices talk about how we can go ahead and make this happen in a timely way on behalf of the American people," Obama said. "That is good news."

    But Obama warned that nothing in Washington should be taken for granted "until my signature is actually on it."

    The president spoke a day after House Republican leaders offered to continue the payroll tax cut without demanding that its costs be offset by other budgetary cuts.

    Obama never mentioned the GOP proposal. But some Democrats are reluctant to separate the payroll tax cut extension from an extension of unemployment benefits and want them acted on at the same time.

    Unless Congress acts, the payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits will run out at the end of the month.

    Obama made his remarks surrounded by individuals the White House says exemplify those who would benefit from the tax cut. The White House says the average family would stand to lose about $40 per paycheck if the cuts are not extended.

    The White House held a similar event in December as Congress struggled to prevent the cuts from expiring. Lawmakers eventually reached a short-term deal to extend the tax cuts for two months.

      Bush 41 once called Ronald Reagan's economic policies voodoo economics.What would Bush 41 call the extension of the payroll tax break? What is suppose to fund our Social Security? Currently 45+% of the households pay no Federal Income Tax! With the average 2011 income at $ 53000 and the average tax savings of about 1000 collars, I don't want to hear anyone #$%$ when the entire Social Security system collapses. Recently the Republicans turned yellow belly because the last time they tried to address this short fall of SS Revenues the media chewed them up and spit them out.Only Rush Limbaugh has repeatedly warned us about the insanity of the SS funding reduction, happening right in front of our eyes. But it seems the public is more concerned about dead , overdosing celebrities than their own economic futures. Maybe they hoping that Obama will just seize rich people's money and give it to those who are REALLY worthy. Dream on!

      When will these liberals learn that America is BROKE? I don't EVER want to hear a liberal try to tell me that Obama is all about the middle class. The article above is proof that he's not. He won't help the middle class unless he can grant MORE entitlements. At some point the middle class is going to rise up against the real enemy - Obama and his minions.

        Speak for yourself. Its because of Obama and the things he has done that was able to move up to the middle class. I got out of the military under Bush. My first job paid less then $12 an hour. Because of the programs that Obama put in place I went from living in the ghetto to living in an OK neighborhood. I went from making less then 24k a year to making over 40k. There are many more like me and we will be voting for Obama in Nov. Obama 2012

        Typical liberal. I guess you didn't even read the article. This will only HURT the economy - Obama won't grant the tax cuts unless we also keep the entitlements. How irresponsible can you get?
