    Obama vs. Catholics

Brent Bozell's column is released twice a week.

The Brian Williams MSNBC debate in Florida was not only dreadfully boring — I never thought I could ever long for commercials — it was pathetic. Freed of the fear of triggering an avalanche of applause against loaded questions, Williams and his co-moderators couldn't bring themselves to utter one single question asking the Republican candidates to respond to Obama's mistakes. For almost two hours, not one Obama failure was cited. Apparently, his record is spotless.

Instead, the candidates (especially Rick Santorum) were thrown four questions surrounding the 2005 legal battle in Florida over pulling the feeding tube of Terri Schiavo, which pushed all the liberal media hot buttons about "far right" religious conservatives throwing their religion around where it didn't belong. This isn't breaking news. But like the ABC debate fixated on contraception, it's evidence that liberal networks are focused on their agenda, not on the voters' concerns.

Let's reverse the conversation. How do these same reporters deal with the outrageous left-wing extreme on social issues? They don't.

Take the order promulgated by Obama's Department of Health and Human Services on Friday to require virtually all employers to offer insurance coverage of sterilization, abortifacients and contraceptives without deductibles or co-pays in their employee plans by Aug. 1. Churches are exempt, but not religiously inspired hospitals, schools and other charities that hire outside their faith tradition.

"The government should not force Americans to act as if pregnancy is a disease to be prevented at all costs," insisted Archbishop (and Cardinal-designate) Timothy Dolan of New York, head of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops. "Historically, this represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty."

That's putting it mildly. What it means is that the Catholic Church is faced with closing down its hospitals, universities and charities — or committing mortal sin.

Amazingly, the major media found nothing historic about this. ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC all ignored it. NPR covered it on Friday night — with a positive tone. The headline on their website was "Administration Stands Firm On Birth Control Coverage." The Washington Post editorialized that Team Obama had made a mistake, but Brian Williams can't seem to acknowledge that Obama has ever made a mistake, even when Obama boasts of his travels to 57 states.

So at what point do our country's television networks notice that Team Obama has an ideological agenda against faith-based charitable organizations, most especially the Catholic Church? Across the country, Democrats have been pushing Catholic social workers out of government cooperation. In Massachusetts, the District of Columbia and most recently in Illinois, Democrats have insisted on forcing Catholic Charities to quit its long-time assistance in providing adoption and foster-care services because they refused to place children with homosexual couples.

How militant is their bigotry? Consider: The Catholic providers offered to refer them to other agencies (as they had been doing for unmarried couples), but Gov. Pat Quinn's government drew a line in the sand, comparing gays to the black civil rights struggle. "Separate but equal was not a sufficient solution on other civil rights issues in the past either," government spokesman Kendall Marlowe told The New York Times. "The child welfare system that Catholic Charities helped build is now strong enough to survive their departure."

The Conference of Catholic Bishops lost a federal contract to aid survivors of sex trafficking because Obama's HHS bureaucrats objected that contraceptive and abortion referrals would not be provided. Steven Wagner reported for National Review that senior officials at HHS, up to and including persons in the office of Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, "overrode career staff to give federal funds to two organizations deemed by the professionals to be unqualified."

Despite this open war on religious liberty, the networks haven't moved a muscle, even after Newt Gingrich denounced their anti-religion bias in a Jan. 7 debate in New Hampshire.

"You don't hear the opposite question asked: Should the Catholic Church be forced to close its adoption services in Massachusetts because it won't accept gay couples? Which is exactly what the state has done," Gingrich declared. "Should the Catholic Church be driven out of providing charitable services in the District of Columbia because it won't give in to secular bigotry? Should the Catholic Church find itself discriminated against by the Obama administration on key delivery of services because of the bias and the bigotry of the administration?"

As Gingrich argued, the accusation of intolerance flows both ways. But Brian Williams and the other major-media "moderators" would rather shave their blow-dried heads than make Obama look bad at a Republican debate.

Partial List of Obama's hostility toward people of Biblical faith:

April 2008 – Obama speaks disrespectfully of Christians, saying they “cling to guns or religion” and have an “antipathy to people who aren't like them.” 1

February 2009 – Obama announces plans to revoke conscience protection for health workers who refuse to participate in medical activities that go against their beliefs, and fully implements the plan in February 2011. 2

April 2009 – When speaking at Georgetown University, Obama orders that a monogram symbolizing Jesus' name be covered when he is making his speech. 3

May 2009 – Obama declines to host services for the National Prayer Day (a day established by federal law) at the White House. 4

April 2009 – In a deliberate act of disrespect, Obama nominated three pro-abortion ambassadors to the Vatican; of course, the pro-life Vatican rejected all three. 5

October 19, 2010 – Obama begins deliberately omitting the phrase about “the Creator” when quoting the Declaration of Independence – an omission he has made on no less than seven occasions. 6

November 2010 – Obama misquotes the National Motto, saying it is “E pluribus unum” rather than “In God We Trust” as established by federal law. 7

January 2011 – After a federal law was passed to transfer a WWI Memorial in the Mojave Desert to private ownership, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that the cross in the memorial could continue to stand, but the Obama administration refused to allow the land to be transferred as required by law, and refused to allow the cross to be re-erected as ordered by the Court. 8

February 2011 – Although he filled posts in the State Department, for more than two years Obama did not fill the post of religious freedom ambassador, an official that works against religious persecution across the world; he filled it only after heavy pressure from the public and from Congress. 9

April 2011 – For the first time in American history, Obama urges passage of a non-discrimination law that does not contain hiring protections for religious groups, forcing religious organizations to hire according to federal mandates without regard to the dictates of their own faith, thus eliminating conscience protection in hiring. 10

August 2011 – The Obama administration releases its new health care rules that override religious conscience protections for medical workers in the areas of abortion and contraception. 11

November 2011 – Obama opposes inclusion of President Franklin Roosevelt’s famous D-Day Prayer in the WWII Memorial. 12

November 2011 – Unlike previous presidents, Obama studiously avoids any religious references in his Thanksgiving speech. 13

December 2011 – The Obama administration denigrates other countries' religious beliefs as an obstacle to radical homosexual rights. 14

January 2012 – The Obama administration argues that the First Amendment provides no protection for churches and synagogues in hiring their pastors and rabbis. 15

February 2012 – The Obama administration forgives student loans in exchange for public service, but announces it will no longer forgive student loans if the public service is related to religion. 16
      2. Acts of hostility from the Obama-led military toward people of Biblical faith:

June 2011 – The Department of Veterans Affairs forbids references to God and Jesus during burial ceremonies at Houston National Cemetery. 17

August 2011 – The Air Force stops teaching the Just War theory to officers in California because the course is taught by chaplains and is based on a philosophy introduced by St. Augustine in the third century AD – a theory long taught by civilized nations across the world (except America). 18

September 2011 – Air Force Chief of Staff prohibits commanders from notifying airmen of programs and services available to them from chaplains. 19

The Roman Catholic Church has been in bed with Marxist Democrats for over 75years. Now they want to pretend they are outraged by Obama trying to force them to provide contraception and abortion through their 'health care' systems. They threaten they will shut down their schools and hospitals. Cut me a break. I'm sure the Pope wanted to see Castro to get some advice on how to deal with Obama. Money has always been the motivation behind Roman Catholicism for the last 800 years. They will shut down nothing. They know Obama will just re-open shop with the ObamaCare brand. So they will make a back door deal. The Roman Catholic Church and their members have not one leg to stand on. They have literally been doing business wih the devil for generations. Talk about hyposcrisy. Roman Catholic, Union (or Mafia), Marxist Democrat has been an ugly American stereotype since the Italians came here over 100 years ago. They even sold out their own families and future generations being paid off by Unions for co-operating with them and the government in shutting down manufacturing. That IS the bottom line. And now Obama is going to show the Roman Catholic Church who their Daddy REALLY is. It is the Devil, himself.

Sick of Obama's attack on our Freedom of Religion? Sick of his arrogance? Step up. Remember the Obama's secular attacks. We need to VOTE OUR FAITH!
    • m  •  3 mths ago
I am a pro life Catholic Democrat but Obama wil lose a lot of Catholic votes by trying to force us to endorse baby killing.
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
M....why now? Why would you vote for someone with clearly the kind of politics he touted? I just do not understand why anyone would have voted for him? Knowing the kind of political agenda he had in mind. Anyone with half a brain could have seen right through him. I did. Was it because he's a black man and people thought it was the "right thing to do" just because he was black. I really think that it was inevitable as I have said over and over again. The 60's and 70's and the flower children, civil rights era has been permeating our media and music for years with that socialist propaganda for years....so hence here we are.

So basically, they will have to only hire inside their faith tradition and lay off all their other employees or close down. More jobs lost thanks to Obama. When they close down, the cost of providing those charitable and hospital services will have to be taken up by other places.

The First Amendment is very clear in its prohibition against the government interfering with religious freedom, yet they constantly violate it with these edicts.
      • krycek 4 mths ago
If this were a case of a church only practicing its faith, that would apply. However, the church has decided to participate in other spheres outside of religious worship. Therefore, it is subject to the rules and regulalations of those other spheres.
      • Rudi 4 mths ago
@We: How do you feel about churches that attempt to write law based on Scripture? Doesn't that violate the First Amedment? None of the states that prohibit same-sex marriage would have those laws were they not religion-based.
      • Bill 4 mths ago
How about Churches paying taxes. They are always preaching their political views.
That alone should void their tax exempt status.

obamam says it is okay to persecute Christians but forbidden to do it to muslims
      • jp 4 mths ago
Where does he say this? And just how are Christians being persecuted in this country. Seems to me that it's mostly Christians (f the gays, f the Muslims, f the poor, f the sick, f the old) who are doing the persecuting.

It seems that the only morally acctable option left to the Church is to stop offering insurance to it's employees. Perhaps they will subsidize employees private insurance purchase with what the Church would have spent on an acceptable plan.

Karl The Catholic Church doesn't prevent anyone from using birth control. I want you to tell me why they should pay for it, for their employees. You want to have your employer pay for your birth control, go work for a secular employer. It's called freedom of choice.

There is obviously a need for the kind of social services that the Catholic Church has been providing.

The question comes down to "who should be providing them?" Obama thinks it should be the public sector. Thats the big-government option. When there are so many rules and regulations attached to public funding, then anyone who receives it effectively becomes an agent of the Federal Government.

If you think, as many conservatives do, that the private sector - private charities, churches and other faith-based groups, etc. - would do a better and more efficient job than the Department of Health and Human Services, then you have to let them provide those services in the way they see fit.

They're only trying to help the needy. This isnt government contracts to for-profit businesses. Its not a question of "separate but equal" or discrimination, its about facilitating the most options and getting as many groups and organizations involved for the betterment of people's lives. Not every option has to be exactly the same as every other one, thats just ridiculous when you think about it.

Other groups will still facilitate adoptions for gay couples, other groups will still provide support for abortions or contraceptives. Its not like the options are not there. Its not like the Catholics are going to adopt out all the good babies before a gay couple can get one. But they will help adopt out a lot of babies that otherwise might not find a home - which would be the greater tragedy?

Our country was built upon choice... this should apply... EVERYONE should have their own personal choices and not be forced to comply against their wills or philosophy... this is mean spirited... Do not go to a Catholic Hospital if you disagree... go if you do... but people should have their own choice. Obam and the Dems should rethink this... Ask Biden's opinion?

What would happen if the Catholic church owned hospitals all refused
the very improper order from HHS?
I for one would like to see the church say "No, we cannot bend our
beliefs to the whims of government".
This is typical of socialist/communist regimes: They TELL church
that they are no longer necessary or relevant, that they, the government,
are god. I spell government with a small g, and God with a large "G".
I truly hope that this dangerous precedent will be felled by the next President.
No matter what government gets involved in they find a way to make it suck
more, and cost more, and produce less value.
