Obama's '8th grade reading level' SOTU address: By the numbers

Tuesday's State of the Union had one of the lowest reading comprehension levels in decades. Did the president dumb things down too much?

"My message is simple," President Obama said in his State of the Union address Tuesday night. He may have been speaking literally. Using the Flesh-Kincaid readability test, which employs a mathematical formula based on the number of words and syllables in a text's sentences to determine its reading level, the University of Minnesota's Smart Politics blog calculated that Obama's speech was written at an "8th grade reading level" — the fourth-lowest of any State of the Union since 1934. Here, a look at how that breaks down, by the numbers:

Dumbing things down for dumb people might not have been a bad idea for him.
    • Topkick  •  4 mths ago
Obama wanted to be perfectly clear to ALL Americans. And check the facts: We have the lowest reading and comprehension levels of ANY developed country. Viewers with limited vocabularies can't get the message if it's over their heads. Hell, I have to dumb down my order at McD's!
      • noone 4 mths ago
And heaven help you at McD's and the computers aren't working and they actually have to add up the cost of your order and make change without the computer giving it all to them on the screen.

Right you are Topkick. The listening level of the average American is about 5th grade, reading 7th grade and comprehension is, I'm guessing, about 3rd grade.
REALLY scary when you consider those are AVERAGE numbers. Which of course means 1/2 the population is worse than that.

The average American reads at a 7th grade level?!?! Good grief, that's where I was reading when I was 5 years old. Still, I guess it explains rather a lot about these comment boards... :-P

And the number of people who didn't watch it was..... To think people get paid for this type of research is just as interesting to me. I'm probably one of the lower scoring readers, although I don't know how you judge at what reading level a person is. If you understand the communication perfectly, wouldn't that just match the delivery?
      • Vet 4 mths ago
One way you can tell is by the things they read and don't understand. Income tax instructions are near the high end, a little below Nietsche and Kant. The Constitution is somewhere below that, judging from the misconceptions. A lot of political commentary is below that, but often poorly written. The teachings of Jesus are fairly simple (if you aren't reading the King James version) but inconvenient to follow.
      • Chill 4 mths ago
You also lower the reading level when you have a high percent of your audience not understanding the tenets of the Constitution.
      • Peaceful 4 mths ago
The teachings of Jesus are simple indeed, yet the ability to adhere to them is the difficult part. I didn't find the King James version difficult to read, although it was a challenge to discover more accurate definitions contained in an older language compared to modern terms. And being that the constitution was written in a similarly "old school" fashion I suppose it would make for more tedious reading than contemporary writing. As important as they are, both the Bible and the Constitution have to be read carefully and repeatedly, if you want to really understand them fully. In the end you do have to match the audience in their broad ability to easily understand what you're saying in a speech to millions of people, so I have no problem with that unless it's insultingly manufactured. It's just as important to me not to be artificially "folksy". Unfortunately, most politicians are excatly that and I don't pay too much attention to carefully orchestrated and/or generic speeches.

      Give him a break.
      He's reading from a teleprompter.
You can't expect a Reagan type speach from Obama.
      • beenthere 4 mths ago
Reagan....Now we are talking about the worst president ever. He was just a actor.
      • Today 4 mths ago
He also read from a telepromter. So did Romney and don't forget about GW Bush, oh wait, so did Mitch Daniels. Did you not follows his eyes as he read from another telepromter? The only one that speaks from the 68 year old hip is GingRick(sp), and Republicans are nowmworried about the words that seem to just roll off of his tongue(smile). He'll probably need a telepromter in order to watch his words when he runs in the general election(smile). You're thinking that since he was an actor that he could just memorize his lines, think again. Good luck JamesM.
      • JamesM 3 mths ago
Sorry Today; Reagan read from file cards in ramdom order. Reagan spoke to the people.
Beenthere: You are living through the worst President.

Being that an eighth grade reading level is (generally) the minimum required for graduation from the TWELFTH grade, "dumbing down" the Address to that level works out well.

    • Juan Tutri  •  4 mths ago
I wonder how many people caught the line that says the average American reads at a 7th grade level. After reading a number of comments on Yahoo, it appears that many of the posters are not even close to that level. I do remember reading years back that the army was rewriting a number of their TM's from the old 12th grade level to 8th grade due to falling reading skills of the new recruits. Can we say DUH everybody?

Dont like Obama but as a Navy instructor I was tought to teach to the level of the class. We did this by having a short introduction and the class talked about themselves. When the class was a mix of officer and enlisted it got a little dicy but that is life. Obama was doing the same thing, playing to the avarage person
    • T-Rex  •  4 mths ago
Perhaps if he limited himself to one or two-syllable words, hard core liberals like Alex Baldwin, Streisland, Oprah and Sean Penn would actually be able to understand him as well. Unfortunately he'd have to use pictures for Biden to have a clue.

    • Earth Scientist  •  Reno, Nevada  •  4 mths ago
One may think, he is adjusting his speech down to the level of the people who might vote for him. I think he is struggling to be up at an 8th grade level. Without a teleprompter, his vocabulary is limited to: Uh, Uh, Uh!
