Obama's Google Hangout Wins Over Republican Questioner

If you watched President Obama's Google+ hangout Monday night, you saw two interesting exchanges between the president and Jennifer Wedel, a 29-year-old Texas mother of two.

It turns out that Wedel's digital meeting convinced her to vote for Obama in this year's presidential election -- despite her support for the GOP.

[More from Mashable: Google Will Start Country-Specific Censorship for Blogs]

During Monday night's Google+ hangout, Wedel, whose husband is an unemployed semiconductor engineer, grilled Obama about his less-than-satisfactory response to her question about visas for foreign workers. Later in the evening, she challenged the president's response to a California high school student asking about college education.

Obama promised to take a look at the resume of Wedel's husband, suggesting that someone with his skills shouldn't be having trouble finding work.

[More from Mashable: Google to Congress: We’re Still Not Evil]

"I meant what I said," said the president during the hangout. "If you send me your husband's resume, I'd be interested in finding out exactly what's happening right there, because the word that we're getting is that somebody in that kind of high-tech field, that kind of engineer, should be able to find something right away."

Afterwards, Wedel, who described herself as a "good Republican," is now planning to vote for Obama in this year's presidential election.

"I didn't vote for him four years ago. But I have been so disappointed with the presidential race. I haven't seen anybody who would have been a good replacement. I know how Obama is now. I know how he rolls. So I'd probably vote him back in," said Wedel in an interview with The Atlantic. "I (feel) like I know him a little more," Wedel said. "There was a connection. He should definitely do this with more people. I've seen some of what they do with YouTube, but this is way better than that. I hope that what happened today doesn't mean that they back off."

Indeed, it doesn't sound like the White House has any plans to back off from digital engagement.

“President Obama had a great time with yesterday’s first-ever virtual town hall event, which offered the sort of genuine back and forth the White House strives for in all of our online engagement efforts, whether through social media, WhiteHouse.gov’s We the People online petitioning system or otherwise,” White House director of new media Macon Phillips told Mashable.

“Meaningful online engagement isn’t easy, but it’s a highly effective way to tackle the challenges facing our country and discuss the best ways to move forward, including the policies the President laid out in his State of the Union address.”

Wedel said she first submitted her visa question over YouTube, after seeing the red phone icon that advertised the Google+ hangout. Last Friday, she received a call from Google, who later sent two employees to Wedel's home to help set up for the event.

By the time the hangout began, Wedel was all smiles.

"Seeing (the other participant's) smiles, I could feel their energy, even though they weren't in the room. You can't see emotion in text, but there was something different about this. That's when I thought, this is going to be cool."

At the end of the night, Wedel gave her husband's resume to Google.

Do you think the Google+ Hangout was an effective way for the president to reach out to voters? Let us know in the comments below.

It's like when Nixon went out to greet the protesters in the Washington Mall in the middle of the night. I think that's the last time I remember a president engaging with the people in a personal way - not a partisan way.

Isn't that the same lady who asked the President to dance for her?

It's pretty ridiculous how much we expect from the office of President.

No disrespect to any candidate, but I have not heard anything from the Republican candidates or the GOP in general that remotely alludes to measures they would pursue to limit the influence of major banks, corporations, the rich and the powerful on government policies in favor of those that would benefit avg, people in the massive middle class and getting our jobs back from off-shore and south of the border...
      • SMPLYHOTT 3 mths ago
What do you expect when you use this as a forum? This is nothing but a Liberal ran organization along with 80 % of the TV news casts. Only Fox and now CNN give both sides of the news and only an informed viewer who looks at both sides can make a reasonable conclusion. I have to watch MSNBC to get my comedy relief. Wait until the final candidate is chosen then make an educated comment...

Fox News! Are you serious? Dialogue is probably futile, but I voted GOP for decades until it became undeniable that they merely fronted as supporters of middle class organizations like Moral Majority, Christian Coalition, Focus on the Family, etc., in order to garner the middle class vote. Did I ever feel snookered! Take a look at the policies they support. They ain't for the middle class, I can assure you! They've tipped their hand and their support for the top 1% has caused me to flee the fold. Bank deregulation, Corporate welfare, tax rates that favor the rich- like capital gains, wall street deregulation, their favor for policies involving big oil, multinational corporations, loopholes that rob our treasuries and gut the middle class, etc., etc. Free Trade Agreements that encouraged the massive exodus of middle class jobs while they open our borders to cheaper products to flood back in that further undermine jobs here, on the other hand, are the only things the GOP and the Dems can agree on, and I'm still trying to figure out how ANY party can support that unless you are in the pocket of the rich and powerful; the only ones in the USA who are making record gains from that set-up...
Look into the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission, "Corporations are people" and "Money is Speech" the history of FTAs; GATT, WTO. Then take a look at the 30 year demise of the middle class beginning with Supply Side Economics and Reagan (yup, I voted for him) his administration raised taxes 14 times to cover the burgeoning nation deficit that swelled from a $3billion surplus when he took office to a $4 Trillion deficit because of his tax cuts on the top earners from 70% to 28% when he first took office; "Business friendly! Yadda, yadda, bet you don't look into it! Why? Because it doesn't fit your perspective...
      • SMPLYHOTT 3 mths ago
I don't disagree with several things you say. I totally believe in the Christian viewpoint and will follow it to my deathbed. If you don't then you will suffer your own demise. You obviously have your head in the sand. Who did Obama bail out???? The BANKS who started this whole problem and it started with Carter...Freddy and Fanny started with ridiculous pretenses...everyone should own a home??? Come on and wake up....They are responsible for the elimination of the middle class....stealing our money and giving it to the poor???? Bailing out the banks??? They were the largest supporters for Obama and got all our money....They never lost a penny and profited off us again ...why??? Who benefits from this administration...the poor...People who think it's their right to not work..Why should I pay anything to people who will not work and think they have a right to live off me....Get your head out of the sand...The Dems are responsible for every large company leaving the US and going to another country where their Corp tax are low..The US thanks to the Dems have the worlds largest corp tax...Name me three large manufacturing companies still in the US??? You can't because they left...If the Dems get their chance the only large airplane company is going to move leaving NONE in the US...It's people like you who don't watch the right news and then make emotional responses instead of researching the truth...Reagan took over a failing economy again left by the Dems...so why did he get voted in...just because of that fact...The Dems get into power and screw things up so bad that it takes eight years to turn some of it around..many things can never be fixed without a super majority...The only way to fix things is to get rid of all of them and throw out everything back to the original Constitution....maybe a few things should be kept but most of the amendments are responsible for the destruction of our country...So....Obama supporter....How much money did Obama give one of his cronies who helped him get elected??? 1/2 a Billion dollars...Solyndra...and when will you admit to this criminal activity??? When he gets sued, tried and put in jail??? You probably won't admit Obama's war......You probably believe Libya was a UN project and the US didn't pay for 99% of the war to date....The fact is you can collect some evidence of questionable voting but don't research who voted for what...I agree with FTA that was wrong but the Dems were just as responsible and did vote in mass for it...We are responsible for putting in lawyers who in my belief have ruined everything for the working person...There are just as many rich Dems as rich Repubs so I don't believe your argument...it doesn't fit your perspective...I like the dialogue though....good luck

How many non-engineers have a real understanding of any engineers job? There are so many specialties (more than doctors) that effectively everyone with more than a few years of experience is a specialist. I am an extremely experienced board engineer and I can tell you most engineers have very limited understanding of anything outside their specialty (no matter what they tell you). Obama is a lawyer by training and politician by experience. The fact that he had heard one story from his 'experts' which conflicted with her story and then decided this was worth investigating to find out what the truth is. I commend him. That is EXACTLY what he should do in that situation. He apparently does understand that the electronics industry is very important to this country and it is important to make sure that industry is on track.

Just 30 minutes ago, Jennifer Wedel had something different to say in an article about Obama's support of visas.I also see several pages of comments on this story are gone.
So much for freedom of the press to report facts, right Yahoo?
    • Cellar Door  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  3 mths ago
If Wedel was this easily swayed then may I suggest she is a Republican in name only. There has been ZERO transparency in anything President Obama has yet to do. Do any of you supporters of this man actually remember him promising that the Health Care overhaul would be publicly carried out so EVERYONE would see what would be in the bill - daily briefing online for all to see?! Have you completely forgotten the way that bill was drafted & passed under the cover of darkness & the leader of the house (Pelosi) telling the media - "we'll have to pass it first to see what's in it" - when asked what was actually in the bill? If this administration has been transparent then obviously I am clueless as to what the word transparency even means. Here's my take on the man I would NEVER in a million years vote for again... The next time you're in a restroom with an electric hand-dryer push the ON-button. What exits the machine will give more value to your life than this empty suit of broken promises will ever be able to actually conjure up - yet alone actually deliver.

Another attempt by the White House to make this clown appear to be connected to middle-class and in touch with reality, which we all know to be bogus!
    • SMPLYHOTT  •  Phoenix, Arizona  •  3 mths ago
What do we expect! Obama made it in to office under false pretenses. He used the internet to win votes from people who have nothing better to do and are uninformed. This election will bring out the true vote and he will lose so bad it will be historic. Bush was a great leader who got a bad rap and history will also prove him a great leader. Sorry Libs, your time is done.

Why is it okay when a Republican government uses taxpayers money for war and executions but when a Democrat wants to use taxpayer money for education and healthcare it's evil? Can one member of the Right explain this to me?

      Thanks!

Can you imagine W. or Romney doing that? I don't think I could watch it because I would be cringing to much.
