    Obesity Linked to Lower Paychecks

MONDAY, Dec. 19 (HealthDay News) -- Obese Americans have smaller paychecks than those who aren't overweight, and this difference is especially strong among women, a new study finds.

The analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth revealed that in 2004, overall average annual incomes were $8,666 less for obese women and $4,772 less for obese men compared with normal weight workers.

In 2008, obese women made an average of $5,826 (15 percent) less than normal-weight females, the George Washington University researchers said.

"This research broadens the growing body of evidence that shows that in addition to taxing health, obesity significantly affects personal finances," Christine Ferguson, a professor in the department of health policy, said in a university news release. "It also reinforces how prevalent stigma is when it comes to weight-related health issues."

She and her colleagues also found that race has a significant influence on weight-related differences in income. White women who were obese had lower wages in both 2004 and 2008 than normal-weight white women, while wages were lower for obese white men only in 2004.

In 2004, Hispanic women who were obese earned $6,618 less than normal-weight Hispanic women. In 2008, the gap among women narrowed slightly but doubled for men. Hispanic men who were obese earned $8,394 less than normal weight Hispanic men.

In both 2004 and 2008, black men who were obese earned more than normal-weight black men, while wages were similar for obese and normal-weight black women.

Last year, George Washington University researchers found that the average annual costs of being obese were $4,879 for a woman and $2,646 for a man. Those figures include indirect costs such as lost productivity and direct expenses such as medical care.

This is a no brainer - Vegetables & fruit cost is up - the only thing the poor can afford is Mac&Cheese & pasta ---- bread, carbs, and cheap (fatty) meat. Even some of the fast food restaurants are cheaper than cooking. Why is everyone so shocked that the poor are more prone to obesity?
      • Li 5 mths ago
Because they don't have a brain in their heads that's capable of connecting a few simple dots......

More propaganda from the idiotic Left. Calorie for calorie, food is the cheapest it's been in history. How did all those poor people centuries ago live on "bread, carbs, and cheap (fatty) meat" without looking like Jabba the Hutt? You must be a friggin' idiot. Save your bull S- propaganda for the Leftist news media like MSNBC or NPR.

Lower paychecks have nothing to do with having a 5 year old that weighs wobbling 200 pounds. It is the lazy American mother who feeds their childen garbage she has grown up on. Most often greasy, lard laced, meats, doughnuts, pies, and junkfood to pacify their children. The culprit is always mothers who are 500 pounds who don't take the time to educate themselves or their children.

They have less money for healthy foods. And maybe less education about what is healthy for them.

You're kidding, right? Amazing how the more technologically advanced we are, the more access to information we have, the more stupid people become. Jesus Christ, Nan! How difficult is it to find out what is healthy for you? And, the ka-rap about healthy food being more expensive is pure propaganda. Yes, by definition better ingredients (organic, etc.) are usually healthier, but that's what makes them better. But, you can eat very healthy food on a budget. You just have go out and buy it, then (oh NO!) prepare it, rather than stuff your face at McDonald's three times a day.

Fast food is cheap, fruits and vegetables are more costly.

No people either just don't know how or are too lazy to cook. Example tonight I bought two days worth of meals for a family of 4 for $28. Going by the assumption that maybe people just don't know how I will give some ideas.

Tonight I am making chicken noodle soup using chicken breast. For a family of 4 you only need two chicken breasts. I paid 1.99 a pound for those. I then bought fresh sage which should never cost you more than 1.99 for 2-3 sprigs. I bought a stock of celery for $1.29. One yellow onion at .99 a lb. I had a can of carrots sitting in my cupboard that I am using. I bought 2 containers of chicken stock at $2.89 each to use as my base. I keep paprika, old bay, garlic, pepper, and sea salt in my pantry for everyday use. I got a pack of egg noodles for the noodles.

Tomorrow night I am making basil stuffed chicken breast so I bought the ingredients for that at the same time. I already had 3 chicken breasts in the fridge and took the largest chicken breast I had leftover from tonight's soup and added that to the other 3. I bought fresh basil for 1.99, 6 roma tomatoes for 1.29 a pound, tri colored rotini pasta, and a loaf of italian bread for .79. Two large portobello mushroom caps for 1.79. I keep a container of parmesan/asiago on hand as a staple because I use it a lot. I also keep dried basil and oregeno which you can get at any Aldi's, dollar general etc. for 1.00 a bottle. I use pomice olive oil or just canola when I cook.

The 4 chicken breasts I have for stuffing I am actually going to cut in half and pound each half down so that I can roll them. So in reality I am going to have 8. I am going to put one of those and the left over tomatoe and pasta in my husband's lunch, I am going to freeze the other 3 for my own lunches during the day. I will have fresh basil and portobello left over so I am going to use them for my husband's omelets in the mornings.

Since I have a stalk of celery and only needed 5 pieces for my soup I am going to make a pot roast on Saturday night. I will end up buying another yellow onion, a bag of russet potatoes, and a small bag of baby carrots for that. I will also get either a piece of thick beef or pork which ever I get at the best price. I will then use the remaining celery for that. I keep worcestshire sauce on hand at all times for things like that.

On Sunday I am going to make pork chops with roasted sweet potatoes. All I need for that spice wise will be fresh rosemary and pepper.

Monday we are going to have green and red cabbage slow cooked with an onion and sausage. I use the polish because its cheaper and leaves me able to flavor it with my spices without having conflicting flavors.

Split pea soup is not popular with my spawn but I still cook it, I cook it with one bag of split peas, one frozen bag of peas, and one thick cut boneless pork chop and about 3 grated carrots.

I can feed a family of 4 on less than $300 a month if I had too, but thankfully I don't have to do that anymore, however, because I have had to in the past I learned how to do it and keep my family healthy.

Let's see....you work 40 plus hours a week for minimum wage, you have a few kids, bills to pay etc...seems to me that by the time you get home and have to think about feeding everybody you would choose the easier but much more high in fat route...Can't say I'm surprise by the find in this article.

I feel that alot of these obese people were never taught how to eat healthy, especially if there parents are not healthy eaters themselves. You only do what you are taught. I say for those who are unhealthy over weight to recieve free classes to teach them how to change their lifestyles. Everything you want or need to be a more productive size cost (weightwatchers, nutrisystem, etc). I believe they should have a program for men/women who are morbidly obese and offer it to them free of charge along with gym membership that would put a whole lot of restaurants out of business because these people will learn how to cook at home and not go out all the time to eat. If they would reduce restaurants all together then obesity would not be such a epidemic. In my neighborhood there is a new restaurant put up everyday it seems (Chinese, Mexican, Soulfood, etc.), and the government wonder why obeseity is a problem. Hmmmmmm??????

Obesity linked to the liberal policies of FREE health care after you refuse to take care of yourself. Oh by the way the check for your socialism shitake is here, wallet please.

This is so sad. Obesity is such an epidemic in this country! People need to get on a program designed for them that will last a life time. They need to re-teach their minds and bodies. As a health coach I listen to my clients, they usually want the quick fix approach but that just isn't going to happen.
    • Clarity  •  5 mths ago
Life's not fair, folks. And, it never will be. We all gain and lose one way or another (no pun intended). Get used to it.

No fast food is cheaper than buying groceries and fresh veggies are not more expensive than frozen or canned. Its an excuse by people who won't buy a bag of dry beans and cook them because its too much work!
