Occupy LA Eviction is Occupy Movement's Last Stand -- Finally

COMMENTARY | The Occupy LA encampment is preparing to face an eviction notice one minute after midnight Monday. While some are sure to pack up and move on, many others are preparing to resist that planned eviction. With the Occupy Movement winding down, it appears that this will be the movement's last stand.

Occupy LA started like other parts of the movement across the U.S. It was a movement that had lofty goals of changing the way corporations work in America, without any plan on how this would be achieved. As the weeks wore on, tensions grew between police and protestors. The result has been bloody battles all over the country. Now that the Occupy Movement has been pushed against a wall, this last stand poses to be the most destructive yet.

In all honesty, the movement has failed miserably. While all of the numbers have not been crunched for Black Friday, we all realize consumerism is alive and well in the U.S. As Police prepare to clash with the crowds in Los Angeles, men and women will be signing online to find the best Cyber Monday deals. People will shell out record amounts of money and corporations will grow stronger.

Occupy LA is sure to fight like an animal facing the last moments of life during the eviction. We will see stories of protestors arrested and pepper sprayed and we will go on with our lives. We will think more about what deals we can find at the next store and not about how corporations hold the power. In a year, few will remember the Occupy Movement outside of jokes. It is ironic, and fitting, how the movement to make people aware about corporate greed would die as the biggest shopping month of the year gets going.

What have we learned throughout this entire fiasco of the Freedom of Speech? Hopefully, everyone finally learned that having an idea that flows against the norm is good but you need a plan to achieve it. If a politician does not have a plan to reduce the budget, the plan (as we have seen) will fail. If a business opens without a strong plan, it will fail. Planning is everything no matter if you are talking about politics, a business, a party or the Occupy Movement. The Occupy LA eviction is the last stand for the movement.

a business no longer needs a brick and mortar store front to survive and flourish these days. i helped create one, so i know. a movement doesn't need a piece of ground to survive these days: all it needs is twitter, facebook and maybe a web site.

their vision of democracy may be different from yours but in many ways it is more valid. the voices of a population seldom speak in orderly, sound bit ways. but the message get money out of elections, get lobbyists out of congress, get jobs for the people who want to work and pay their bills, these things came through if you had an ear to listen. democracy is messy, it seldom shines its shoes.

the most vibrant part of democracy is the conflict of voices crying for justice unlike the stilted rhetoric that is offered to denigrate them.

This is what I keep saying, just because they go home doesn't mean the movement is over....there's still the 2012 elections...

The police are also part of the 99%....They have family that have lost their homes, jobs have poor health care and education debt.
      • J Aspen 5 mths ago
Yet they have sold out there principles for money and the excuse to beat up CRIPPLES IN WHEEL CHAIRS and people sitting on the ground. Not a proud moment in history for law enforcement, some of which are from other countries- a clear violation of our Constitution.
      • chrisdj614 5 mths ago
No they are doing their jobs by enforcing the law. If the protesters wouldn't break the law and disobey police orders they'd have no worries.
      • missy 5 mths ago
The police are part of the 99%, but they are also the slaves to the corporations. Just like our government serves the giant corporations.

Bravo Villaraigosa for defying the Obama/Bankers & Homeland Terrorist idict to to disband the Occupy LA Heroes!!!

      Wow! That's really lame.
I do not participate in Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales. And maybe the author of this article can afford to shell out a small fortune on Christmas gifts, but many of us cannot do more than a gift or two and some lovely holiday traditions. And we are happy with that, because consumerism is NOT alive and well.

That's right, it's CONSUMERISM that is ringing its death rattle. People are waking up to the reality that the crap you buy during the holiday season (or any other time) doesn't make for happiness. Economic stability is not the ability to buy a bigger substitute for your little... self-esteem.

I have great faith that the American people can and will continue to find that Eureka! of self-discovery, learning that love of friends and family, and satisfaction with one's own life work is the only happiness - and that cannot be bought at WalMart.

Like I said, they must be some of your kin there, and probably you!!!
    • Matthew  •  Los Angeles, United States  •  6 mths ago
Failed miserably?? I don't think so. The awareness of a need for real, planned, organized protest has been created. Leaders will eventually rise and the Great Beast (as Alexander Hamilton once labeled the American public) will be awaken. Change is inevitable, for without it, we shall become a third world country. We can only rely on military power for so long. Seeds have been planted, Poupard. And I am ashamed to admit that I was absent during the initial wave.

And I am sure you and whoever's paying you would love for this to be a joke a year from now. We'll see. Time will tell.
      • Truthseeker1234 6 mths ago
Well said Matthew. This writer is a paid schill for the power brokers to try and squash the movement through propaganda. This is phase two after they illegally cleared out the camps and will now wage all out psychological warfare through all the media outlets and on the message boards with an astroturfing campaign (look up that term on Wikipedia if you're not familiar with it already).

The occupy movement has already maded history, has opened the dialogue about income disparity and the income distribution increase in the upper 1% groth in the last 20 years.
Now some pinheasded idiot from Yahoo writes his opinon "that they are up against the wall, last stand ect".
Well we will see next summer when the two parties conventions are underway, the Euro has died and taken all the TBTF banks with them.
My question is "if peaceful protest is not tolerated, then who will be the next Tim McVeigh"?
McVeigh's actions were a response too the ATF actions at Waco and Ruby Ridge, in a good economy, and a highly sucessful war, now with a bad economy, and 500,000 vets comming home to no jobs and lost oppurtunities, some will step to the plate!

In all honesty, Occupy is not finished and it has not failed. As long as "free" enterprise is still picking pockets, the resistance will go on.
    • david  •  Brea, United States  •  5 mths ago
I support the movement. I agree with some things and disagree with other things. I just seriously think that they could've attacked certain issues better and not have left their mission so broad that nobody even knows what they want. If anything they at least brought the corporate greed and lobbying to light.
    • Truthseeker1234  •  6 mths ago
Complete #$%$ propaganda article once again put out by the big power brokers through a schill editorial writer to try an destroy the Occupy movement. This writer should be tried for treason for intentionally trying to subvert the democratic process through false propaganda. Occupy is NOT dead by a long shot folks! Go Occupy!
    • Yvonne  •  Denver, United States  •  5 mths ago
Dang, yahoo hires anyone to write their #$%$ for them. Why do do people who can't write even try? They make the people they work for look like idiots as well as embarrass themselves.

You fail to understand that encampments are not important to the movement, reinvigorating this country is !!! Occupy Wall Street is a movement not an address.
    • Moose  •  5 mths ago
Occupy LA is a waste. Drove down there and all everybody does is complain, smoke dope, and crap on the grass........even my dog is more productive than those Yahoos who are themselves the 1% of wackos living in the area.
