Occupy Wall Street Backlash: The 53 Percent

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.
Do you have a story to tell? Become a Yahoo! contributor

The Occupy Wall Street movement considers itself the voice of the 99 percent, the people not among the richest one percent of the population. But a new group has sprung up to oppose Occupy Wall Street. Calling itself the 53 percent, the group claims to speak for the 53 percent of Americans who pay federal income taxes.

    '53 Percent' Origins

Mike Wilson, maker of "Michael Moore Hates America," started the 53 percent movement after seeing a photo of conservative blogger and CNN contributor Erick Erickson, editor of RedState online, holding up a note. The note describes Erickson as working 3 jobs, owning a home he can't sell, and facing outrageous insurance costs. Yet he says he doesn't blame Wall Street and is subsidizing those who are hanging out there complaining. Wilson started a Twitter hashtag #iamthe53.

    53 Percent's Perspective

The perspective of the 53 percent of Americans shouldering the country's tax burden is presumably no more unified than that of Occupy Wall Street. But Wilson's group appeals to those who like him want to distance themselves from Occupy. He suggests they're a bunch of slackers looking for a handout. And he says the Occupy protests are really opposing the 53 percent not the 1 percent at the top of economic spectrum.

Erickson suggests that protesting K Street and Congress is okay, but not protesting Wall Street. What seems to really get his goat is Occupy members bashing those who have it better than them instead of directing frustrations at government policymakers.

    53 Percent: Fact or Fantasy?

The New York Times pointed out last year the misleading nature of saying that 53 percent of Americans foot the bill for federal taxes. While the statistic is accurate with respect to federal income taxes, the Times said when you take into account payroll taxes for Medicare and Social Security and other federal obligations like investment, gas and excise taxes, that number jumps. Taking the bigger picture into account, the Times says that only about 10 percent of American households pay no net federal taxes.

The 53 percent apparently isn't carrying the weight for quite so many Americans -- regardless of whether they're workers desperate for a job or slackers -- as the reliance on federal income tax data alone suggests.

The big question in my mind is, which side of the 99vs53% contest are "taxpayers" who receive handsome paychecks from tax coffers. I'm thinking especially of those in the military-industrial sector, which receives in excess of 53% of the federal budget: not just those currently in the military (some of whom had stolen $2.3 trillion of tax dollars as of 9/10, 2001, according to tax-funded Donald Rumsfeld), but also the best-pensioned retired officers who double-dip in public coffers as contractors and, indirectly, as lobbyists.

I didn't know that Yahoo had become CNBC. Of course people still pay payroll tax and social security, but pay NO federal imcome tax. This article shows your ignorance at a fundamental level. Everyone who has an income pays thoses taxes, they are a "buy in" to medicare and SS for retirement. I pay 35% of every dollar I own, ONLY to the Fed. I never received a dime from the govt. Worked my #$%$ off through 17 years of training after high school, and finally at the age of 40 make a really good paycheck. Glad I am seen as the villian by the OWS gang. I guess when they have cancer, I will occupy my living room and see how they like that.......

People who aren't necessarily in the 53% may still identify with them. (Why we've never had a class war in the United States: people identify with the economic bracket they're working their way into.)
      • Phebes 7 mths ago
We've never had a class war?

You didn't pay much attention in history class, did you?

The irony of the Tea Party picking the Boston Tea Party to represent them says so much about how little Americans know about their own history. After all, the Tea Party wasn't about the burgeoning Americans rebelling against their government, it was about rallying against the East India Company who's money had utterly corrupted the government.

And the Tea Party folks are against the OWS movement. Amazing.
      • Priscilla King 7 mths ago
        (1) At that stage our ancestors weren't the United States; and (2) although the taxes they were protesting can be traced to the tea company, and/or the feudal system, and/or the mental illness of King George, and/or the selfish nature of humankind, what they were talking about at the time was taxation and, secondarily, lack of representation.

I am the 53%, I have been working since I was 15 years old. I ask for nothing, I expect only what I earn. I do not stand with the 99%, I pity them for not having the will to be the 1%. The 1% owe you nothing and neither do I. I am the 53%.... I give massive amounts of money to things I care about. That really help people, not the government. They waste it. I am the 53%, and if I had my way, you all would pay, even if it was one penny. You live in the greatest country on the planet, you should contribute to it. It's sad that the 47% vote, and have no skin in the game... pathetic... I am the 53%, and yes, my voice matters much louder than yours.... I contribute.... Going to bed, time for another 60 hour work week!

It would take an idiot to loan an 18 year old tens of thousands of dollars to go to college.
      • McMicah 6 mths ago
No it wouldn't. Once an 18 year-old is beholden to a loan-giver, s/he is effectively owned by the 1% for many years. The 1% know this well, but half of the 99% don't. Wolf dressed as grandma: "The better to divide and conquer you, my dear."

Occupy is about problems with government and wallstreet. Since a large portion of our government leaders take their lead from the mega bucks handed to them from wall street.

Everyone has their own opinion about a movement that has so many different stated objections.
They cannot tell us what it is about (cahnegs from each individual), and you suscinct two sentences doesnt conform to the statements I have heard them saying.

Let's see how many Faux News morons are here. Who actually BELIEVES only 53% pay taxes? Are they actually too stupid to realize the SOCIAL SECURITY surplus, you know, that fund paid near exclusively by the bottom half funded all those tax breaks that Bush used to allowe billionaires to now pay less than a Wisconsin School Teacher. Time to Occupy Faux News. Truthspeak needed.
      • Daniel 7 mths ago
"Are they actually too stupid to realize the SOCIAL SECURITY surplus, you know, that fund paid near exclusively by the bottom half funded all those tax breaks that Bush used to allowe billionaires to now pay less than a Wisconsin School Teacher." - The real truth is yes... 53% do not pay "Federal Taxes"; however, everyone pays all the other various taxes including social security not just the lower income as you imply. In fact... Social Security benefits are skewed toward need so higher income indiviuals who pay the most ultimately receve the least real benefit... this should be increased via means testing IMHO as social securty has never been a retirement plan, but a social safety net for the needy. Call it what it really is - senior welfare.
      • Foamy 6 mths ago
You mean like GE? And the fact you bring up Bush is laughable! And what does Social Security have to do with federal taxes #$%$ Two separate issues and you fail on both!
      • scott 6 mths ago
you are a #$%$ the bottom half doesn't pay nearly what the receive from social security. Social security is a progressive tax, idiot. How the surplus is spent is another issue, but laying that burden on the middle/lower class is pure ignorance. Maybe, I should explain is in more detail. A person pays X amount per year in SS, based on a percentage of income. If you make more, you pay more. When you get old, you get back a percentage of what you pay. If you make less through your working life, you pay less, but could get back more money over your retirement depending on how long you live.MyFing2cents is as ignorant as the rest of the homeless at OWS.Everyone has taxes, only 53% pay federal taxes, which is much higher than the others.Obviously you wouldn't know that as you must not pay it , loser
    • TheCentimillionaireAntiEs ...  •  7 mths ago
Sounds no less stupid than that OWR nonsense.

Someone has to stand up for the average working class person. GO 99%ers!!!
      • H 7 mths ago
And how are they standing up for the working class? By not working and protesting? What are they protesting for again?
    • Mike Oberg  •  7 mths ago
I think OWS is taking the message to the corporations who are running (ruining) our government; I don't see why they should work with the middleman (Congress)!
    • me  •  7 mths ago
Sounds like the RICH 1% are bankrolling this new guy
    • MyFing2cents.  •  Englewood, United States  •  7 mths ago
Oh shut the up! I'm getting tired of hearing this #$%$, about the bottom half paying no tax. What a disgraceful accusation by morons. EVERYONE, even imbecile talking heads at Faux News realize taxes are paid by all and a FACT is most millionaires pay a lower percentage than a fire fighter, school teacher or nurse. People pay in medicaid, medicare, FICA, FUTA, SUTA, property, sales, the works. While we pay, the average billionaire found loopholes to write all this off with more Wall Street banker accountants. And guess what funded all those tax breaks under Bushie Junior? Yes, the SOCIAL SECURITY SURPLUS. Jack___es out there.
    • OL SCRUFFY TOLD YA SO  •  7 mths ago

i am shocked it took this long, this started with reagan, he gave america a illusion of wealth. with the housing market, all you needed was a home, a morgage and we felt so rich so powerful we were one of them, are lives wernt perfect but we new as we got older we would be ok. the truth is we were being suckard. you see we never were one of them,, we never really were rich, now the jobs are gone, the moneys gone, the homes are worthless ,and they want to take away what little we have left, social security and mediare .you see were the baby bommers theres allot of us and to pay all the benifits we paid for, well that would mean we would have to raise the taxes on the rich. the rich know this and they dont want to pay. But remember we all worked to make them rich what ever job you work , loading a truck, welding a bridge, cleaning the street,we helped make the money . We dont want much just anough to be happy with are families as we grow old

"Oh, yay me I pay taxes. You don't because you're too poor so you suck." This is so stupid. Most college students pay more in interest to the government on their school loans than the so-called 53% ever will. Everybody pays taxes. Have a cell phone plan, you paid taxes...bought gas, you paid taxes...bought beer, you paid taxes.

Glad to see some push back to the Occupy clowns. The Occupy crowd really should think about dispatching some angry protesters to Occupy Hollywood. Wouldn't it be hypocritical of the Occupy movement not to do so? Shouldn't celebrities who make an enormous amount of money, even while claiming solidarity with the poor, be subject to protest as well? Hollywood celebrities are in the top 1%. Some examples: Steven Spielberg-3 billion with a B (so I can comprehend such filthy richness, 3B is 3,000 millions); George Lucas-3.2B; Barbara Streisand-only 300 million; Roseanne Barr-100 million. To be fair there is a non-Holloywood type that is worth 5.3B. His name is Charles Butt, no lie. He is obviously proud of his last name. I think that Occupy thinks everyone that is in the top 1% is a butt, unless they are celebrities. This figures as libs are notorious hypocrites. As one feller put it, "Hollywood to liberals is like their sports stars. It is the team they root for regardless how obviously silly they are."
