Occupy Wall Street: The draft manifesto

With the Wikileaks-style disclosure of emails from the Occupy Wall Street movement’s private listserv, observers and critics of the movement got their first look at the movement’s early internal history — including a previously unseen draft manifesto.

The collection of emails emerged Monday morning, apparently collected and placed in the public domain by a movement insider.

The manifesto, written by Micah White of the Canadian Adbusters Media Foundation, betrayed the beginnings of a more ambitious social agenda than one merely concerned with banking and Wall Street regulation.

Included among its first demands was the forgiveness of all student loan debt. But even among the 18- to 25-year-old set that populates much of the “Occupy” movement, not everyone could agree.

In a followup email, an activist named Gail Zawacki wrote that while “student loans are outrageous,” a culture clash inside the movement would ultimately preclude homeless protesters from identifying with college graduates.

“I’m not sure,” she wrote, that “university students unhappy with tuition will look anything other than elitist to squatters in tents.”

Read the early Occupy Wall Street manifesto:

A MESSAGE TO AMERICA FROM THE PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY IN ZUCOTTI PARK

    Dear fellow Americans,

We are assembled in Zucotti Park — which we’ve renamed Liberty Plaza — in the financial district of New York, because we believe that the American economy is heading in the wrong direction and we have a few ideas for what to do about it.

There is a feeling shared by a growing number of people on the streets of the world that the global economy has become a kind of Ponzi scheme, a global casino, run by and for the benefit of the 1 percent.

We believe that it is possible to inject justice into the global economy. We have come up with the following list of things that can be done right now to rejuvenate democracy and economic justice in our country:

    •        Halt foreclosures for the unemployed, sick and elderly

    •        Increase funding to public services by taxing the richest 1 percent

    •        Forgive all student loan debt

    •        Reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act in order to control speculation

    •        Work with the other G20 nations to implement a 1% “Robin Hood” tax on all financial transactions and currency trades

    •        Ban high-frequency ‘flash’ trading and bring sanity to the markets

    •        Break up the “too big to fail” banks that threaten our future

    •        Arrest the financial fraudsters responsible for the 2008 meltdown and bring them to justice

    •        Ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence corporate money has on our elected representatives in Washington

If you agree with any of these demands, then join us!  We will stay here in our encampment in Liberty Plaza until President Obama responds to each of these demands.  This is just the beginning, there is more to come as we work together to reshape America.

So let me get this straight. They voluntarily sign for loans to go to college then after college is over and it's time to repay their loans... they want the loans forgiven. And the kids and families who worked and sacrificed to go college and either have no loans or at a minimum lesser loans... ooooppps sorry, no money back for you. Most of these protestors are just whiners. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme what others have earned and gimme gimme gimme what I feel I am owed... that seems to be their mantra.

A CEO, a teaparty guy and a union worker are sitting at a table with 12 cookies. The CEO grabs 11 and tells the tea party guy that the union guy wants his cookie....theres your answer!

Forgive all student loan debt? The economy has been bad for years now. Why would someone make a choice to go to college knowing that they won't be able to find a job after graduation? Not to mention that a lot of students use loan money to buy other things (clothing, entertainment, electronic gadgets, vacations, etc).

No world peace on the list of demands?!?!

whhoat? I paid my college debts already, 5 years ago, in that case I want money I paid for my college back as the others are forgiven, and pay me back all the mortgages I paid for the last 10 years. If they are getting away not paying, I want the same........

That's great for them but what about the rest of us actual hard working Americans? I worked my ass off to pay my student loans and keep up with my mortgage among other bills. Am I going to get re-embers for that or is this just for the lazy non- hard working Americans? Just wondering.... It's seems like these people are just as selfish as the "1%ers" Let me know when I should expect my check for all the money for welfare, unemployment, medicare, extra police and clean up that comes out of my taxes every week for these guys.

        what about your kids?
just because we've suffered a fraudulent system dosent mean they have too as well
        that's why they are fighting
so ALL of us can overcome

I did over come and I will teach my kids how. It's called hard work something you and the rest of them don't understand I guess. Nothing in life is free or easy. The American dream isn't given to you, you actually have to work for it. What are these people teaching kids in America? That if you whine and cry enough you will get what you want?

Plus: Get rid of corrupt, greedy and incompetent rating agencies like Standard and Poor's and powerful lobbying groups like SIFMA (Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association); pass the Healthy Workplace Bill immediately, so that workplace bullying and targeting can end. Take strong measures to deal with cheats and liars who dupe people to enrich themselves.

"The People's Assembly of New York"? What? Are they trying to resurrect Chairman Mao? They have "ideas" on how to fix things? Sure they do. And I'm the reincarnation of Mother Theresa. Whatever happened to the good old days of tear gas, firehoses and dogs?

      • Tony 7 mths ago
        because its a racket
if you pay 300k for a college degree that should cost 100k tops
then you get out there in the working world and no one is hiring then wouldn't' u feel like u got the short end of the stick too

Because an entire generation is financially enslaved to the banks, that's why. Some freedom, thought that would be the least America was good for.
    • Bourbon  •  7 mths ago
Reinstating Glass Steagall, curbing hedge fund speculation, and breaking up "banks too big to fail" all makes sense. Mainstream common sense.

Taxing the very rich should not be used to pay for more spending. We are already spending too much. Use it to reduce the deficit.

On this OWS and the Tea Party could agree.

So why aren't the protesters occupying the White House?

FACT:Obama received more money from Wall St than any politician for 20 yrs....
      .
Despite his rhetorical attacks on Wall Street, a study by the Sunlight Foundation’s Influence Project shows that President Barack Obama has received more money from Wall Street than any other politician over the past 20 years, including former President George W. Bush
      .
In 2008, Wall Street’s largesse accounted for 20 percent of Obama’s total take, according to Reuters
      .
By the end of Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, executives and others connected with Wall Street firms, such as Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citigroup, UBS AG, JPMorgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley, poured nearly $15.8 million into his coffers.
