Occupy Wall Street Protests Rankle the Rich

In the 5th week of the Occupy Wall St. movement, with protests now having spread now to 150 U.S. cities and even to Europe, the apparent objects of that protest—the richest 1 percent—are starting to push back.

The grumbling from the wealthy took off with a sign posted in the windows of the Chicago Board of Trade last week, in a place where street protesters easily could see it, which proclaimed: "We Are The 1%."

No one is sure who put up the sign, but plenty of folks in the building could be included in the 1 percent.

If a joke, it was one many protesters didn't get. "I thought [the sign] was extremely disrespectful," a special education teacher named Corey, 35, told TimeOut Chicago. Mike Polski, 53, from Joliet, disagreed, telling TimeOut, "These people wish they were the 1 percent! The 1 percent are billionaires."

He's wrong. According to IRS tax data, anybody earning $380,354 or more qualifies for membership in the top 1 percent. That would include some of the better-paid traders at the Board of Trade. (IRS data shows, too, that the top 1 percent holds 35.6 percent of the nation's wealth, not the 50 percent claimed by Occupiers.)

Whoever posted the sign, trader Eric Wilkinkson says he is in sympathy with it. The real parties responsible for the nation's economic ills are not the rich, in his view.

Says Wilkinson, "It's capitol hill and Obama that are the culprits. They're the ones not doing their jobs." The Occupy movement he calls misguided. Somebody rich, he says, "Should not be penalized for making headway in this society. They should pay their fair share of taxes, but they shouldn't be taxed more. They deserve their money."

Wilkinson under his nickname—the Wolfman—has gone out on the street to film a video giving his own take on the protest (see "twitter@wolfmansblog).

On Twitter, one anonymous person who claims to relate elevator gossip at tony investment bank Goldman Sachs -- which may have more 1 percenters than anywhere in America -- tweeted: "What are they complaining about? People seem a hell of a lot happier in TGI Fridays commercials than they ever do at Gramercy Tavern." Another tweet said: "A protester sees my Benz, and wants to rip me out of it. A real man sees my car, and wants to work hard so he can buy it one day."

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain easily qualifies as a 1 percenter, since his financial disclosure forms show that in 2010 and 2011 he earned generous fees from sitting on a number of corporate boards, including that of Whirlpool, which alone paid him $359,008.

Cain says people who are not rich have only themselves to blame. "Don't blame Wall Street," he told protesters, in an interview with the Wall St. Journal. "Don't blame the big banks. If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself. It's not a person's fault because they succeeded. It is a person's fault if they failed. And so this is why I don't understand these demonstrations and what is it that they're looking for."

Billionaire New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday doesn't think too much of Occupiers, either, saying in an interview with New York City's WOR Radio, "If the jobs they're trying to get rid of in the city—the people that work in finance, which is a big part of our economy—go away, we're not going to have any money to pay our municipal employees or clean the parks or anything else."

And another thing, he says: "None of this is good for tourism."

I find it disingenuous at best, that the OWS crowd isn't concerned with the GSE Fannie and Freddie. While they owe the tax payers hundreds of billions, they pay executives millions in bonuses. OWS pays no attention to this ? Laughable. Our corrupt government is responsible for this type of exploitation of America's productive, tax paying citizens. The "takers" OWS crowd are phony, you are just a diversion from the real criminals in Washington !

If the protestors put as much time and effort into their jobs, maybe they wouldn't be so badly off.

      An Open Letter to Congress
Whereas:Congress, the Federal Reserve, and the U.S. Treasury have put the American taxpayer on the hook for over $16 trillion in bailouts and loans; and
Whereas: The Federal Reserve continues to refuse to fully disclose the details of its emergency lending; and
Whereas: Allowing the Fed to operate our nation's monetary system in almost complete secrecy leads to abuse, inflation, and a lower quality of life for every American; and

      Whereas: HR 459 and S 202, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, would require a complete audit of the Fed for the first time in its history and would provide answers to the American people about how our money is being spent;

Therefore: It's time to hold the Federal Reserve accountable to Congress and the American People. I urge you to do everything in your power to pass the Audit the Fed bill!

The problem with the Republican rich is that most of them didn't get rich by working hard and making good choices. Not hardly. Most of the rich who "made" their own money actually got it by lying, cheating, stealing, misrepresenting, creating laws to make themselves more money, making backroom deals, underhanded actions, getting lucky, etc. They feel owed, so they aren't satisfied and want more. In using the tactics mentioned above, the road to riches is fraught with peril. They know they're rich, because they haven't got caught yet. They're always looking over their shoulder.
      .
Rich Democrats, on the other hand, are more willing to give back to society, because they know how much effort it took to get them to that point while maintaining their honesty and integrity. They know the struggle and know the difficulties that others have had to face. They likely feel guilty for the few times they had to lie or cheat. They realize they were fortunate; if one thing had gone awry, they may not be where they are. They know their roots. They feel blessed, so they are more willing to share their fortune.
      .
The main problem with the Democratic politicians is they're always trying to negotiate. Occupy Wall Street is now saying, "Enough. You can't negotiate with these kinds of people. The Republican politicians are bad people and will continue to take. The Democrats need to take on the Republicans head-to-head and toe-to-toe. There is no other way!" Their movement is a movement aimed at the Democratic politicians to grow spines and fight for us. Stand down the Republicans. Don't give in. Fight for us!

      On the turning away
      from the pale and downtrodden
      and the words they say
      wich we won't understand
      " don't accept that what's happening
is just a case of others' suffering
or you'll find that you're joining in
      the turning away"

      It's a sin that somehow
      light is changing to shadow
      and casting it's shroud
      over all we have known
unaware how the ranks have grown
driven on by a heart of stone
we could find that we're all alone
in the dream of the proud

On the wings of the night
      as the daytime is stirring
      where the speechless unite
      in a silent accord
using words you will find are strange
and mesmerised as they light the flame
feel the new wind of change
on the wings of the night

      No more turning away
from the weak and the weary
      no more turning away
      from the coldness inside
just a world that we all must share
it's not enough just to stand and stare
is it only a dream that there'll be
      no more turning away?

      • Dungeon 7 mths ago
Protect your country from any troubles, do right things: rich, poor, are not the source of the problems, may be the big big debt that is the source of all problems.
    • Aldoro  •  7 mths ago
all these problems are a result of an out of control, over powerful congress for the past 80 years. when we allow then to make laws that exclude themselves, when we allow them to give themselves raises...

another piece of corporate propaganda, this time trying to re-frame the OCCUPY movement as a "jobs" issue. Shame on yahoo for allowing this one-sided, biased p.r. attempt.

      #OCCUPYWALLSTREET GRIEVANCES

      1.Campaign Finance Reform
All votes are no longer equal in our Democracy. Money must be put outside of politics, or politicians will continue to pander to those who contribute the most to their campaigns, rather than their own constituencies. Specifically, we abhor the decision by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. FEC. Corporations are NOT people.

      2.True Shared Sacrifice
While corporate profits have been skyrocketing and the wealthy have been getting wealthier, the average worker’s income has dramatically dropped. While the cost of living has exponentially increased, wages have not followed. It has been shown time and time again that tax cuts for the wealthy are NOT effective. Taxes on those who practice greed should be raised.

      3.Equality in Justice
This great nation was founded on liberty, but also, on equality. When the balance of justice is swayed in favor of those with wealth, the very fabric of this nation is torn apart. The decision of a judge should not be based upon the race, creed, or wealth of an individual, but rather, the content of the case.

4.The End of the Revolving Door
The Obama administration was supposed to bring change and hope to our country, but instead, brought us into despair and insecurity. Those working in his administration are the very people whom we are fighting against. Those who enter Washington should not be representatives of the elites, but representatives of the people. One cannot simply enter an administration, reap its benefits, and simply exit.

Mr. Bloomberg, they're not trying to get rid of these people, they want them regulated and and to face consequences when they gamble with OUR money.
      • Frizbaloid 7 mths ago
Obama's the one gambling with our money. He stands in front of a roulette wheel and keeps putting everything on 37.

Overr Regulation is the problem, coupled with the politicans and their stupid idea of globalization.

If someone can become rich on thier own merits so be. I think we should focus on the crooks you made millions selling out trade and pensions.

For all of you taking the spin that occupy wall street has no unified message....Do you need the main stream media to tell you what they are protesting about?
      Find other sources of information.
Read their signs. Its clear. Very clear.
    • Anonymous.  •  7 mths ago
Actually, those silly protesters are nothing more than nimrods Jay Leno had not yet had the chance to interview on "Jay Walking!" Moreover, there is just ONE truly relevant question a news reporter might ask them: How old are you?!

Bring back Glass-Steagall! The banks need to go back
to basic lending, credit cards, CD's and savings
accounts. We need legitimate market fundamentals,
built on a sound financial foundation, with transparency
and regulations! Not a Casino where the only ones
      accountable are investors and taxpayers!

      Abraham Lincoln said:
"The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace
and conspire against it in times of adversity.
It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than
autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy.
It denounces as public enemies, all who question its
methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great
enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers
in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest
foe. corporations have been enthroned and an era of
corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers
of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by
working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth
is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is
      destroyed."
    • xzimppledink  •  7 mths ago
Corporations should sink or swim, like the rest of us.
    • Craig  •  7 mths ago
It's not that we're all brainwashed per say to believe most rich people are heartless greedy jerks, but what you need to understand is that the system we are currently in is specifically designed to allow this types of people to accumulate mass amounts of wealth using all kinds of morally questionable practices. It's all about the incentives that are available. And right now, the incentives are available for those willing to rig the system to their advantage. While it is still technically possible to become wealthy through innovation, hard work, and ingenuity alone, it is simply getting harder and harder in the modern era to achieve this level of success without doing it on the backs of people with less or environmental/ecological damage. And if you are able to succeed with this uniquely profitable idea/philosophy, chances are, given enough time a massive corporation will figure out your innovation, copy the idea, sell it more cheaply and then move the factories to China.
    • kr  •  7 mths ago
Corporations run our government with their lobbyists and donations. The only way to get real change is to reform the system with REAL campaign finance reform or public funding for campaigns, outlaw the lobbyists, and evict the career politicians from their cushy jobs. This is what we should all be demanding from our government
