Occupy Wall Street Takes Aim at Student Debt

With the ever-increasing chance of eviction facing "Occupy" movements across the country, Occupy Wall Street has been forced to consider its next step. Whether the movement morphs into a political group capable of reform through the ballot box is yet to be seen. However, some specific action is already taking place. One thing Occupy Wall Street has taken aim at is the growing student loan debt carried by the nation's college students. Here are some interesting facts relating to the "Occupy" campaign and student debt in general.

    * According to Washington Square News, protesters in Zuccotti Park are trying to gather one million signatures from students vowing to ignore their loan payments. The campaign is consistent with the "Occupy" movement's larger belief that college education is a fundamental right of citizens.

    * The campaign is being run by the Education and Empowerment Committee of Occupy Wall Street.

    * The price of studying and living on campus at an average public university rose 5.4 percent for in-state students, or about $1,100, to $21,447 this fall, according to CNNMoney. Meanwhile, community college, which is usually a low cost alternative for lower income students, tuition posted an 8.7 percent gain.

    * The New York Federal Reserve Bank puts the total student debt at $550 billion, according to the Economist.

    * Sallie Mae, the college loan giant speculates there is $757 billion of outstanding student loans.

    * Lending this year alone is projected to be in excess of $112 billion, which will send the total student loan debt owed by American students to over $1 trillion.

    * Depending on the estimate, America's students now owe more in college loan debt than Americans owe in credit card debt, reports the USAToday.

    * According to the Huffington Post, the average debt students owed in 2010 was $25,250, which represented a 5 percent increase from the previous year.

    * Out of the nation's 50 states, New Hampshire had the highest average debt load at $31,048, while Utah had the lowest at $15,509.

    * The Obama Administration has tried to deal with the student loan crisis by capping monthly student loan payments to 10 percent of discretionary income. The White House estimates this could assist 1.6 million students in lowering their payments.

Our National debt is 15 trillion and growing everyday. College loans guarantee debt slaves for many years to come. These people will have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to survive. This means working almost 7 days a week 60-80hrs a week for 10-20 years. Our country needs these slaves to pay the taxes just to keep this country afloat. This is the new reality.99% of these people don't even realize they would be better off working at McDonalds straight out of high school in the long run. Or even starting a business selling or servicing anything.(and they don't teach you that in high school and the question is why?) They are all be blinded by smartphones, pop culture, and the #$%$ promise that if you work hard and stay in school it will pay off. This may be true for the people going into the right fields but for the majority it will not turn out the way they've been taught and the sad truth is they will not even realize it until they are waist deep into it! By the way it's a brillant system they came up with. Nobody ever stops to question any of it. From the moment you are born you are taught that money is everything and you will need to make a lot of it so you can have "Stuff" and stuff = happiness!

Nobody forced those idiots to borrow so much money for a useless education. They made their bed they can lie in it. Now I have to bail out some stupid college graduate becasue he paid too much for an education that only gets him a $15.00 an hour job?

The solution is simple. Just stop loaning money for Degrees that have no financial return. Ultimately that is the collateral for the loan.

Screw loan forgiveness, these people are on the hook until the debt is paid. I repaid my loans, they can repay their's.

The only people entitled to a College education qualify under the GI Bill. If you can't afford College then suck it up.
    • RV  •  5 mths ago
The cost of the Bush's (father and idiot son) wars would have given a College Education to every American who wanted one for the next 20 years AND would have rebuilt every High School in the United States.

The only folks entitled to a college education are those who qualify under the GI bill. The rest; well if you can't afford it oh well! I'd like a Ferari, but can I afford it? No of course not, my Jeep will do just fine.

If you want to mortgage your future then that is your choice. Just don't expect me to be sympathetic to your poor deccision making.

I know a woman who wanted to borrow another $50k to add to her already monstous debt to get a Master's degree in Social Work. So she could get a $45k a year job rather than a $40k per year. She snubbed her nose a the stipend offered at a good State school and wanted to go to a snooty private school instead. Stupidity at work! Five years from now she'll be whinniung about how she has too much debt and it is somebody elses fault.

If you have a goal toward higher education - you have to plan for it and that includes working hard, planning a budget, AND most importantly taking responsibility for yourself. If you want people to respect and listen to your view, then do something worth getting that respect. Thank you.

No, thank you for making excellent points without slinging petty propaganda and insults around.

It's not that easy if you come out of school with $100,000 in debt.
    • Lori W  •  5 mths ago
you would think they all would be thankful that the money was there for them to borrow. Back in the early 90s when I went to school an individual was only able to borrow a certain amount per quarter, causing me to have to drop out because I couldnt get any more loans. Quit yer bitchin and get off ur butts like all of us have to do every day.

Blahahahhaah I laugh at all these idiots. My college degree cost me nothing.I worked at kraft and paid my tuition. It was hard working full time at night and going to school full time during the day but now I get to reap the rewards. While your living at momy or dady's home, working at Starbucks.
    • Edmarc  •  5 mths ago
It is not my obligation nor the governments to repay your student loans. I had to scrub floors and clean toilets for years, drover a beater car, ate ramon noodle while living in a dumpy apartment and after 9 years, I graduate with NO DEBT!!! Why should they be any different?
      • Lee W 5 mths ago
Good for you! You showed how it should be done, but, how many students want a flashy car, several credit cards, and nice clothes as well as a bit of cash?
Not everyone is as sensible and as dedicated as you!

Wait, they take out a student loan and refuse to pay it back and then complain about bailing out banks that have no money because people don't pay back loans?
      What am I missing here?
      • Dusty Rhoades 5 mths ago
It's not what you're missing - it's what they're missing. I'll give you a hint - it's what you and I have filling the space between our ears.
      • Whatever 5 mths ago
Well if you add in mortgages and then factor in the amount of credit card debt that is written off when people file bankruptcy, you pretty much have the roots of the financial crisis covered. Of course the bailouts were loans that were repaid when the credit markets freed up. As a result of the financial crisis, capital reserve requirements were raised so that in the event of another downturn companies would still have enough capital to continue operating and wouldn't need another bailout. As a result these companies are now sitting on cash and the OWS protestors are complaining about that, too. You just can't win with OWS, they'll complain about everything and offer no solutions other than tax the rich because the 36% of total tax revenue the top 1% pays is just not enough.
      • Dio 5 mths ago
students loan debt is up 510% since '99, that's what you're missing

My father worked his way through school. My sister worked to pay for her education. I did attend classes for a year and a half before I was hit with PTSD and had to drop out, but I saved and paid for my classes. I don't feel sorry for people who decide to take on debt and then complain about it.
    • Thomas  •  5 mths ago
"Tenured" College Professors encourage these protests..
While living in mansions on campus (for free)
and earning a six figure salary with excessive benefits..
Maybe the OWS protesters should look to their college professors for financial relief.
    • SakitSaPuwit  •  5 mths ago
protesters skip school to go to a protest, to try and get their student debts paid off, so if they stop protesting they can try to go back to school ( if the didn't get kicked out for not attending) and get a job? that they can no longer get cause the got arrested for breaking the law at a protest?

I'm so confused, screw it wheres the beer!
    • BigRog  •  5 mths ago
"According to the Huffington Post, the average debt students owed in 2010 was $25,250, which represented a 5 percent increase from the previous year."

Sounds like the price of a car. I bet they won't go without that though or maybe they will want everyone else to buy that for them too.
    • charlie  •  Saint James, United States  •  5 mths ago
Maybe it's just me, but who told these kids to rack up gigantic loans in the first place? So they picked an expensive college, went for a degree in God only knows what and expected to graduate into a cushy 6 figure job. Guess what, degrees in political science, early Romance languages and American Lit aren't going to do that for you.

When I went to college, I picked one I could AFFORD...key word is "I", my parents didn't pay for my college. I wanted to be a teacher but saw there were no teaching jobs...so I picked sometheng els, I was lucky with a good summer job and hustled work during the school year and still played varsity sports. I graduated into a lousy job with a small student loan after looking for 3 months BUT, I worked my way up and paid the loan.

Too many kids today have no conception of reality, Once you get older things don't just come to you. You have to work. You are the result of your decisions. You picked the expensive college, you picked the major you took. Life's hard. Get over yourselves.
    • Rob  •  Morristown, United States  •  5 mths ago
Just have the government garnish their wages when they get a job. What a bunch of losers. We all had to pay for our loans. No one said you are guaranteed a college education, especially if you get loans to go to top schools. You want affordable college, then go to a community college for the first two years.
    • Lee W  •  Cadiz, United States  •  5 mths ago
I had a student loan, and repaid it. It was slow, hard, and I had to do without a lot of things--especially as we were paying for my daughter's funeral, raising her three children, and working--but I got my loan paid, and other debts as well!
I understand some doctors and lawyers are among the worst to repay--some of that, I should think, would be due to setting up a practice; equipment, furniture, personnel, etc. But, even small payments would help the person.
Others, I hear are just out to get the money, and don't intend to pay it back. How in the world can anyone be so heartless and foolish? Paying it back helps others.

I hear that Alabama has hundreds of thousands of openings in the agricultural engineering sector since the new anti-illegal alien law came into effect: tomato picking, to be exact.
    • jason-q  •  5 mths ago
Out of all their demands, Student debt irritates me the most. They did it themselves. What is wrong with working your way through college, Going to a cheaper school, living a little lower on the hog while in school, and quit supporting some lazy slug on your loans. Suck it up. it is your debt, not mine.
    • ustaknow  •  5 mths ago
tuition's going up 8% year over year has to do with the mafia ( Teachers Unions)
they are far worse than the banks in that either you borrow and sign your life away at the college level:or, in case of the elementary grade levels they simply raise your property taxes once- twice- three times a decade to pay for the exorbitant salaries of the School superintendent and the principals.
I read a story of a school superintendent who was making 700k a year - that should be illegal.

If you do not think liberals make their money off you one way or another- either through your taxes or extortion then you have blinders on.
Vote Independent and for lower taxes- because we are being screwed by the democrats.
      • Rich 5 mths ago
You're almost there but have ideological blinders on, both sides are actively screwing us Dems and Reps. You make some good points though so keep digging and you'll evenually find the whole truth of the situation.
      • Just 5 mths ago
Wait...in dental schools in the mid 2000's they raised tuition by over 30% in one year in Denver, against the law, and forced the students to sign a petition for it to have that increase approved...nazism
      • ustaknow 5 mths ago
Well I hope we all realize that Washington politicians ( Dems and Pubs) are bought and paid for.
It is called Cronyism and a result of efforts on behalf of any one organization ( collective group) to Lobby ( request made by the aforementioned group) by promise of favor( political donations, all expense paid trips, outright fee for speaking engagement or other nefarious means).
We as a nation are being led by a Few that create propaganda ( political fodder ) for the many to cause factions and division among the masses.
The one says about the other ( You are republiCON and bought and paid for by Wallstreet)
The Other says ( You are a DemocRAT) giving tax dollars to foreign countries and welfare babies)
Both are partially right but the point is the division is enough to divert the real attention away from what really ails us , which is the System structure has evolved to function in a manner that profits the few ( Government workers and Politicians) - for it is when these few are most profitable that the benefactors ( the Lobbyist mentioned above) are most appeased.

The trouble with the system is multifaceted in nature- for on one hand it requires massive spending- on a level that eclipses the revenue that it brings in which results in a cry for more revenue which brings out a group of peasants that are known by some as the TEA PARTY ( Taxed enough Already) .

And yet on the other hand the system rewards the benefactors (Lobbyist) who reward their selves with absurd pay scales which brings out the other side known as the Occupiers ( the group of people who are now being pepper sprayed at UC DAVIS) that recognize that the System is dysfunctional and rewards disproportionately ,the Lobbyist, and when they talk about it are now being put into a political context by the media to prop up the beliefs that the individual writer has come to know or believe due to years of propaganda by the FEW ( FEW = government politicians)

The end result is a chaotic division that has an underlying sense of "Symmetry" that both parties ( The Tea party and The Occupiers) sense but have yet to put into context exactly what their Base Gut instincts are telling them.

In the balance of the story you have the common man and woman ( regular folk, working class folk, everyday Joe " You and me") that recognize that both factions ( Tea Party and Occupiers) are somehow right but on the other hand wrong- so we have to make the wrong make sense and to do so we revert back to what we have been taught throughout the ages by the FEW with their propaganda.

We need all Americans to stand up and say that hey the TEA PARTY and The Occupiers are partly right and therefore cant be all wrong so we will hear them out on this matter.

I feel like the the trouble with the system can be fixed- it will require a revolution at the voting booth that surrounds sound business principals applied to the revenue that we take in. We cant spend more than we take in and Government employees and politicians should not be paid excessively ( like fortune 500 companies) but rather like a scale of the common workers)
The public sector should not be the most desired or coveted place to work because it pays more than the private sector- the private sector imo is any business that is not a publicly traded company.

p.s. There is nothing broken that can not be fixed even if the fix requires replacing that which is broken.

With Kindest personal regard I am hoping

( Hoping that Occupiers and The Tea party can be supported by the Common man or woman who know that both are partly right and yet needs a gelling factor so we can take the good and leave the bad and coalesce)

If you dont want student debt then pay as you go, dont go or find some other option... It is not anyone elses problem that you have debt or that you went to the most expensive school though it wouldnt actually improve your chances of solid employment
