Occupy Wall Street? Why Not Occupy a Job?

The Protesters May Be Speaking Their Mind, but Do They Really Know Why They're Protesting?

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.
Do you have a story to tell? Become a Yahoo! contributor

COMMENTARY | Yes, I have student loans. Am I mad about that? No. Because I chose to go to college. Do I think college should be given to me? No. It's something you work for. It's something you earn. Don't want to have to pay for it? Study hard and get scholarships. It's not my (or any taxpayers') fault you decided to be an art history major and during a recession you can't "find a job."

Honestly, don't give me that "can't find a job" line. Temp agencies are always hiring. McDonald's is always hiring. How about, rather than trashing the streets, blocking traffic and using an NYPD car as a bathroom, you look for a job?

These Occupy "where ever you are" protesters are getting on my last nerve.

Here's an idea. Want to stick it to the banks? Don't take a loan. Don't borrow money. Don't spend more than you make. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. Want to change the world? Want to change policy? Don't just hang out. DO SOMETHING. Contact your representatives, your senators, the president. Write letters, tweets, emails. Make phone calls.

Do I agree with the protesters? No. Have you read some of the "demands" of the group? Wow. If that's the kind of government and regulations they want, I'm sure Cuba would love to have them. But their anger is directed at the wrong group. It's not Wall Street or bankers, it's the failed administration of Barack Obama. The protesters need to move from Wall Street to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Here's the deal. Just because you were born in America, you're only entitled to three things, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. No one said "health care" or "college education." People who have worked for things (and yes, even those who have inherited it) owe nothing to anyone.

Yes. We need to boost the economy, but I've never known of a poor company hiring people, it's always the companies that are doing well that hire. We need to get our people back to work. We need to stop the wasteful spending (and bailouts). This is America. No one and no company is too big to fail. It is failing is how we learn. At nine months of age, we didn't start walking around without falling a few times.

Unlike this blogger, I don't consider myself a percentage. My husband and I don't own, we rent. Having worked for a mortgage company, I knew that once the "balloon loans" everyone was getting came due, it was going to burst. And it did. But I knew what we could and couldn't afford. So we didn't buy.

It's about personal responsibility. That's what it all comes down to. It's something that worked for our grandparents... why can't our generation do it? Stop blaming and start working. And be sure to vote in 2012.

No one "makes" you become a trucker or construction worker. You do it because you CHOOSE to go into that line of work because you like the pay, lifestyle, whatever. Usually, it is because you can make good money in your late teens and early twenties, while other people are in a technical college or in regular old college. If you cannot find a trucking job or a construction job, you have to adapt. No one starts a business by force, either. They do it because they think it is their best option for income and lifestyle. Some win, some lose. Just like some construction guys make a good living and others do not. If not, they have to adapt. That's reality.Do you work for free? No? Then why should business owners allow their businesses work for free by having to pay out their profits? They shouldn't.Democrats AND Republicans are a problem, because, YES, America is a corportocracy. It isn't capitalism-- the government exerts too much control over everything. Our representatives do not care about us -- just big business. But the solution is not Socialism and it is NOT giving the government more control, and therefore, giving large corporations more incentive to bribe ("lobby") themselves into tax breaks, bailouts, etc.Rich or poor, businessman or laborer, if you kill somone, you are a murderer, and if you steal, you are a thief. Our politicians and too many big businessmen are in bed together because government is too big and it regulates and controls EVERYTHING, so the only way to run a big enterprise is to cheat and use political influence to get your way. Not supposed to happen in America.Personal responsibility IS the issue here. If you cant find a construction job, then DO SOMETHING ELSE. I swear to God, its like standing under a tree after you ate all the apples, crying because you are hungry. Open up your eyes and grow up -- go find a pear tree or go fishin if the apple tree has dried up.By insisting that "I am a construction worker" and then demanding that SOMEONE gives you work and money -- dude, that is living in lala land, and that's what they did in the Soviet Union for about 40 years, and then it went belly up, because the only way a thing like that works is by taking from actual producers and giving it away to crybabies. At some point, the producers are gonna object.Tell you what: if business is so easy and the government should just "take" from businesses to give to crybabies, why don't YOU start a construction company and have a Union tell you you gotta pay your guys 2x what they are really worth and the government will tax the rest. See how long your business lasts. Starting to understand it, now? No one busts their #$%$ trying to run a business unless they think it is going to be good for them. They run their business for themselves, not for crybabies like you, and not for the govenrment. They run their businesses for the same reason you go to work -- to take care of yourself. Grow up and get some life coping skills -- and skill in another industry -- and stop trying to pick the pockets of your fellow Americans. The Founding Father rebelled against big, costly government that took their money with no representation. You knucleheads better wake up and realize that big government is responsible for war and human misery (Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia), and it is human generosity and ingenuity (MIND) that is responsible for human achievement (Bell, Ford, Curie, Jobs, many the list is long and awesome).A crybaby construction worker who is mad at reality never accomplished anything.

You do realize that every time a new career is chosen, it takes years of training and then the candidate has to seek and land a position, start at the bottom and attempt to move up. If, in the meanwhile, the career goes defunct or overseas, it starts all over again? Job seeker has used up his savings and is maxed out in student debt...who then is left to pay training to yet another career "choice"?

Do you know anyone who is occupying or actually spoken to them before writing your article? Don't assume they are all unemployed and unsuccessful. I know plenty of people who are occupying locally and all of them have jobs and pay plenty of taxes. A number of them own houses, and all of them know why they are protesting. Additionally, many people are turned away from McDonalds and similar jobs for being "overqualified." And have you ever tried to pay the rent while working for McDonalds? My husband and I own our house and will be truly debt-free come January when our mortgage will be paid in full. We aren't "occupying" but we agree that the government is screwed up and is helping big corporations screw us over at any chance.

Same kind of argument made by the wealthy prior to the Great Depression. Why do you think Teddy Roosevelt was called the trust buster? Then after the Great Depression FDR created the golden age based on putting people to work by doing many infrastructure projects and creating things like the Tennesse Valley Authority and the rural electrification project using the goverment to turn around the economy. Most importantly were the regulations put on capitialism to prevent anything like the great depression ever happening again. The regulations that kept capitalism in check until the likes of Reagan and everyone after scrapped those laws like the sherman anti trust act to name just one. Now look where we are at again as usual history repeats itself. The same kind of people that came up with the idea of HMOs and making health care about profits instead of about health. Medicine used to be based on a non profit idea and people didn't need insurance companines. Capitalism isn't the problem just like guns aren't the problem its the people that use them incorrectly that makes them dangerous. Companies used to offer benefits and you could work for a company for your entire career now you can't depend on anything. There is 0 stability, and of course there are jobs at Mcdonalds but you can't even pay rent or a mortgage on the wages they pay. Profilts over people is the obvious problem when you have an abundance of labor then you can pay people anything then the question is why bother with an education if you have zero upward mobility and are working just to pay the bills why Mr. Wealthy has more discretionary income in one year than you will in your whole working life and because of your labor he became rich. Do you honestly believe one man is an island and he got rich on his own? If it wasn't for society buying his products and society providing the labor and the truck driver delivering raw materials and shipping his products on the tax payer paid for infrastructure called the roads and highways he wouldn't be rich to begin with. Lastly Capitalism in its present form based on infinite growth utilizing finite resources is doomed to failure or are you to blind to see and can't think for yourself and don't have any common sense.

Giant government caused the Depression to drag on, and the current administration has not learned its lesson by mimicing massive expenditures which did nothing but made politicians and their cronies richer.

Here is how progress happens - a bunch of people who have been doing the same thing the same way for years sitting around, when along comes a guy who is smarter or who just gets a really good idea. 99% of the others stand around and tell him he is an idiot and it will never work. 1% work for the guy with the idea.
Sometimes, the idea works, sometimes it doesn't.
But when it does, it can revolutionize an industry or technology or process.

So, yes, the "idea man" (or woman) breathes the same air and walks the same streets.
But without her, there would be innovation.

Should the Beatles not be heralded for genius because they only played "old" already discovered notes?
Should Stephen King not make money off his books because he uses the same old words?
Should a trucking company that does its work faster, safer and more efficiently than the other company, using the same roads, but doing a crappier job, not enjoy the fruits of its labor - profits?

You cannot divorce this from the basic truths of reality.
We all have access the same roads and air and electricity.
But those who do more and get results and bust their butts -- they DESERVE more. They are the reason everyone else has to catch up.

AMD made Intel produce better chips.
FedEx made the post office and UPS step up their game.
Without the carrot and the stick, you get stagnation.
And stagnation is what kills all Socialist governments.
Its what is happening in Europe.
It happened in the Soviet Union.
EVEN CHINA HAS MOVED TOWARDS CAPITALISM and China regulates industry LESS than America does now. No wonder they are making $.

You ideas have been tested, over and over, in human history, and, what can I say? EPIC FAIL.
Freedom is always the best route. Government cannot create wealth and does a great job at destroying current wealth and shutting down future wealth by removing incentives and punishment with payments to non-producer and bailouts.

"Lastly Capitalism in its present form based on infinite growth utilizing finite resources"

Microprocessors get faster every year, and the prices of computers go down.
Houses are less expensive to build.
Cars go faster and burn less gas.
        Household products use less electricity.
Deadly diseases a generation ago do not exist now.

Innovation is powered by the human mind and the desire to make money.

        Your "plan" destroys both.

If only progressives had the kind of blind faith in free markets (and in God) that they do in know-nothing big government and endless regulations. Sad when people don't know their own history any better than this.
      • FineHat 7 mths ago
The fact that you think you need to rely on someone else for a job, then complain about the situation is pathetic. Go start a business, then you have the control, and the risk. Oh, wait, you're too busy complaining to actually get off your backside and do it. The reason there are companies to work for is that someone got sick of their situation and went out and made their own situation, not because they shouted in the streets.

It's unfortnate that the protestors are going about this all wrong. Ruining the parks and areas that they are sleeping. Urinating all over the area so it smells like an outhouse, blocking streets, bridges and businesses. If they want to deliver a message they're going about it all wrong. These kind of actions just tell people like me that they're irresponsible and disrespectful. I agree with the writer, go get a job and quit this disrespectful and destructive showing.

If I recall correctly the USA was founded by protest, demonstrations and unconventional warfare. Further, many of the "agitators" including John Adams (I think the third US president) was considered a terrorist by the Brits and a warrant for his immediate execution if captured was issued.... TRUE.
      • David 7 mths ago
Yea, but the founders were people who built businesses for themselves, not sitting around banging on pots and pans, demanding that King of England provide for them. The founders were people who rolled up their sleeves and worked. They created businesses and protested an overly oppressive government that took too much of their hard earned dollars from them. They were not lazy, lay about leaches, who demand wealth redistribution.

I'm a democrat and I agree with this. Occupy Wall Street has no solutions to the problems they are protesting about. Holding up a sign saying "End Poverty" is great and all, but it ain't gonna do anything. These people aren't like the Libyan rebels. They don't have a plan. They are hippies who think that by sitting in a park, they are going to achieve something. Good luck with that.

You try to find a job that pays a liveable wage. For some we been in a Depression. We the tax payers had to help save the banks and the Government then turned there backs on the tax payers. Now they want to use our money (IMF mostly U.S. money) to save the Europeans banks. It's time to say #$%$ YOU.

Hey idiots out there, the corporations didn't get us into this mess. Liberals got us into this mess by insisting that everyone in this country needed to own a home. Go ahead, look it up. It's really not that hard.
Toxic mortgages (read subprime) were then packaged up and traded as derivatives by the financial industry, after being de-regulated by (guess who, the slickmeister himself, Bill Clinton) when Glass-Steagall was repealed.
Just as this article is about personal responsibility, Liberal Progressives are responsible for what has happened to this country, NOT corporations.
    • Michael  •  7 mths ago
It's funny how people protest large corporations, while most of those people protesting on Wall Street probably own an iPhone or iPod. Thanks to their purchases, they made Apple the most valuable corporation at one point. They don't realize that the very companies they're protesting are the very same companies that they support.

you're a #$%$ plain facts, educational attainment and good health are the tools that people need to succeed in today's world. take those off the table and you are working at mcdonald's...with no health insurance, and no money to send to your own kids to school. see the cycle of poverty and debt? you're being intentionally thick and completely anecdotal. keep renting and turning a blind eye. we'll see where you end up when retirement age rolls around.

There are four unemployed job seekers for every one job opening. When I was unemployed I was turned down by all fast food jobs, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, and 7-11. All because I was "overqualified". Perhaps you should do just a tad bit more research before you go judging a group as a whole.
