National Depression Screening Day
The Washington University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry reports that more than 17.5 million Americans are affected by some sort of depression. Of those, 9.2 million suffer from serious or clinical depression. Chances are that if you're not afflicted yourself, you are close to one or more people who are.
Today is "National Depression Screening Day," and encourages everyone who suspects they may be suffering from depression to go get screened.
The Mayo Clinic lists these possible symptoms of major depression:
* Indecisiveness, distractibility and decreased concentration
* Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches
* Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
You do not have to live with or suffer from depression. Help is available.
National Coming Out Day
A survey conducted by Yahoo! revealed that 7.1 percent of all adults surveyed over the age of 18 self-identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered (GLBT). That constitutes 18 million Americans, many of whom are still in the closet.
Even though recent years have resulted in many celebrities coming out, that trend may not be as prevalent for other GLBT individuals. Many people with non-traditional sexual orientations may be out in their personal family lives, but still hide their secret from bosses, co-workers, neighbors, and clergy.
Oct. 11 is "National Coming Out Day," and challenges us all, not just those who are GLBT. Our challenge is to offer support and acceptance to let our relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers know that who they are is not defined by their sexual orientation.
